In my view, the ability of Matz to stay healthy and perform reasonably well is much more important than the situation with Flaherty simply because the Cardinals are on the proverbial hook with Matz for 3 more seasons. Matz collected $8.5M for only 48 innings of work in ’22 and the best I can tell will be paid $35.5M before his contract expires at the end of ’25. I’m still surprised he was hired on for 4 years, but I guess that’s the nature of things now.
