St. Louis Cardinals press release

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today (Wednesday) the signing of three more players from the 2017 First-Year Player draft, as well as one non-drafted free agent who have agreed to terms with the organization, highlighted by the Cardinals top pick, outfielder Scott Hurst. Two pitchers, one outfielder and one infielder are among the latest players who have signed and passed physicals with St. Louis.

Scott Hurst

Hurst, the Cardinals’ third round pick, gives the organization five of their top eight picks signed. The left-handed hitting junior outfielder from Cal State Fullerton was recently playing in the College World Series. Other draft selections in today’s announcement include Hurst’s teammate, Cal State Fullerton second baseman Taylor Bryant (33rd Round), and Torrance (Calif.) High School right-handed pitcher Alex Gallegos (35th Round).

The team also announced they have agreed to terms with non-drafted free-agent left-handed pitcher Austin Warner, a 22-year-old pitcher from the local River City Rascals of the independent Frontier League.

The Cardinals have until July 7 at 4:00 p.m. CT, to sign their selections from the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

The news of Hurst’s signing was first disclosed on Tuesday night by Jonathan Mayo of MLB Pipeline.

The $120,900 of slot money not used for Hurst can be applied to one of the nine yet unsigned players from the Cardinals’ draft class of 38. Six of the nine are high schoolers with the threat of attending college instead of signing providing them additional negotiating leverage. Overall, St. Louis has a current excess of about $287,000 to work with. Full draft class financial details can be found at The Cardinal Nation’s members forum ($).

At this point, Hurst’s initial team assignment has not been announced. Short-season Class-A State College seems the most likely destination.

Taylor Bryant

TCN members were already aware of the three other additions, as Bryant and Gallegos were on the opening roster of the Gulf Coast League Cardinals. Same for Warner, whose rights were acquired from River City, and announced here last weekend.

Update

Andrew Summerville

By mid-afternoon Wednesday, State College announced the additions of both Hurst and 12th rounder, pitcher Andrew Summerville to the Spikes active roster. The signing of Summerville, a junior lefty from Stanford, had been announced by St. Louis six days ago, on June 22.
