Brian Walton’s take

Miller, who is playing out the final weeks of his three-year, $35 million contract, has been reduced to pitching in low-leverage situations in 2021. This is his second foot blister bad enough to require an injured list move this season. One has been on each foot.

Whitley, 26, was out from late May until late June due to back spasms. After rehab time with Double-A Springfield, he was optioned to Memphis on July 11. In Triple-A, the right-hander has logged a 1.69 ERA in 16 innings over 12 appearances. Whitley struck out 21 and walked seven.

The Cardinals’ 13th-round draft pick this June, lefty Hayes Heinecke, has been activated on the Florida Complex League roster.

The move leaves seventh round pitcher Alec Willis as the final member of the Cardinals’ 20-man signed draft class for 2021 to join a team roster.

Cordero away

Peoria pitcher Diego Cordero has been placed on the High-A club’s Temporarily Inactive List. The left-hander has basically received an approved temporary leave of absence.

Less than 2 1/2 weeks ago, Cordero was promoted back to Peoria from the Complex League Cardinals. In 7 1/3 innings for the Chiefs since, the 23-year-old yielded five runs, four earned, for a 4.91 ERA.
