St. Louis Cardinals release
The St. Louis Cardinals have placed left-handed pitcher Andrew Miller on the 10-day Injured List with left shoulder fatigue retroactive to August 24 and activated right-handed pitcher Junior Fernandez from the Injured List to join the Major League roster. Infielder Edmundo Sosa was activated from the Injured List today (Thursday, August 27) and will report to the Alternate Training Site in Springfield, Mo.
For today’s doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Cardinals have recalled right-handed pitcher Seth Elledge from the Alternate Training Site as the 29th man.
Miller, 35, appeared in seven games this season sporting a record of 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA and a team-leading two saves in two opportunities pitching 5.2 innings. The southpaw was last on the Injured List in September 2018 with a left shoulder impingement while as a member of the Cleveland Indians.
Fernandez, 23, appeared in one game for the Cardinals in 2020, tossing a scoreless inning with one strikeout vs. Pittsburgh on July 26.
Elledge, 24, is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in three appearances, pitching four innings with striking out eight to rank third among Cardinals relief pitchers in strikeouts. The rookie earned his first Major League win in his last outing on August 20 vs. Cincinnati before being optioned.
Sosa, 24, has yet to play in a 2020 Major League regular season game, but was participating in Summer Camp exhibitions.
Brian Walton’s take
In his pregame remarks to the media via Zoom, Mike Shildt said the team is “pretty comfortable” that Miller’s IL stay will be limited to the 10-day minimum. Further, “it doesn’t appear to be anything overly structural,” the manager added.
Fernandez and Sosa are the third and fourth of the team’s 10 COVID positive players (and the former is the first pitcher) to be activated, following Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong. Still working their way back are Carlos Martinez, Kodi Whitley, Ryan Helsley, Rangel Ravelo, Austin Dean and Lane Thomas.
Sosa’s optioning to Springfield while Max Schrock is active in St. Louis suggests the latter may have passed the former in the team’s reserve infield pecking order.
Fernandez offers a fresh arm ahead of a new series of doubleheaders – at least seven next month. The right-hander has minor league options remaining and could move down to alternate camp in the upcoming days as the club rotates pitchers in and out.
In terms of the 40-man roster, the Cardinals still have 46 men on it. Upon the activation of each of the remaining six COVID IL players, one other will be required to be removed from the 49/46-man.
