Brian Walton’s take

It is not odd that Carlson was put on the shelf. However, what is odd is that Carlson was in Tuesday’s initial lineup against Milwaukee before being scratched. In other words, the line between able to play and out for at least another week is incredibly thin.

Manager Mike Shildt said that Carlson took swings during Monday’s off day. However, he did not recover well on Tuesday, hence the scratch and IL move. With shortstop Paul DeJong also injured, the Cardinals did not want to risk playing two men down.

Austin Dean

Dean is coming off a hamate bone injury suffered in May and spent most of last week rehabbing with Palm Beach, where he posted a 1.200 OPS against Low-A pitching. The 27-year-old had just six at-bats since his return to the Redbirds, all on Sunday, going 1-for-6 with two strikeouts.

In 27 at-bats with St. Louis tp open this season, Dean slashed .222/.324/.407/.731.
