Cardinals Option out Oviedo, Recall Elledge

Brian Walton’s take

Short of a roster move affecting another player (such as injury, trade or waiver, who he could then replace) or a scheduled doubleheader, during which he could be the 27th/extra man, Oviedo cannot be recalled for another 15 days. This puts into question who will make the sixth start next time through the rotation as the Cardinals continue their long current stretch of 17 consecutive days with games.

With the recall of Elledge, the Cardinals are continuing with their new mix of 14 pitchers and 12 position players. The 13-13 split was altered on Wednesday when outfielder Scott Hurst was sent down to make room for Oviedo.

After having traveled with St. Louis on the road as a member of the taxi squad, the 24-year old right-hander will be making his 2021 Cardinals debut.
