Cardinals Minors Spring Camp Report – March 21, 2023

photo: Joseph King (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Selected St. Louis Cardinals-provided stats from the organization’s minor league spring training Camp Day  on Tuesday, March 21. Our Player of the Day is WBC Team Great Britain pitcher Joseph King, who allowed just one baserunner in three shutout innings with three strikeouts for Palm Beach.

On Tuesday, March 21, the St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers each other in a Camp Day. Both games were held on the George Kissell Quad in Jupiter as Memphis defeated Springfield while Peoria and Palm Beach played to a scoreless tie.

The Cardinals are labeling their teams “Working Groups”, which is an important reminder that these rosters are written in pencil and change daily. Over a dozen players are yet to be sent down from big-league camp over the next week or so.

Thanks to Cardinals Player Development and Media Relations, the following are selected stats from Tuesday. Notes and Players of the Day come from me.

Also, my personal notes, lineups, rosters, photos and news from the day are available to members of The Cardinal Nation.

Memphis Redbirds (4): vs. Springfield Cardinals (1) – 5 innings

Memphis

  • RHP Logan Gragg – 3.0 IP – 1 H – 0 R – 1 BB – 2 SO  (Innings 1-3)
  • RHP Angel Cuenca – 2.0 IP – 1 H – 1 R – 1 BB – 3 SO  (Innings 4-5)
  • OF Victor Scott II – 2-3, HR to RF, 2 R
  • OF Moisés Gómez – 3-3, 2B, RBI
  • INF Chandler Redmond – 1-3, RBI 2B
  • INF Errol Robinson – 2-2, HR to LF

Notes: Gragg, 24, was St. Louis’ eighth rounder in 2019 from Oklahoma State. In 2022, the right-hander primarily started for Peoria (3.92 ERA) but worked out of Springfield’s pen (6.07) afterward.

Springfield

  • LHP Connor Thomas – 5.0 IP – 9 H – 4 R – 0 BB – 6 SO
  • C Nick Raposo – 2-2, HR

Notes: It is Raposo’s home run trot captured in the photo I used for my in-depth Tuesday recap. The 24-year-old was earlier in big-league camp as a non-roster invitee after posting an OPS of .806 at Double-A last season.

Peoria Chiefs (0): vs. Palm Beach Cardinals (0) – 4 innings

Peoria

  • RHP Tanner Jacobson – 2.0 IP – 0 H – 0 R – 0 BB – 3 SO  (Innings 1-2)
  • RHP Augusto Calderon – 2.0 IP – 0 H – 0 R – 0 BB – 3 SO  (Innings 3-4)
  • OF Won-Bin Cho – 1-2
  • INF Michael Curialle – 1-1

Notes: Not only did Jacobson and Calderon hold Palm Beach hitless in the four-inning contest, they did not issue any free passes, either. Unless there was some type of oddity, they had a perfect game going.

Jacobson, 23, was St. Louis’ 10th-round draft pick in 2022 from Queens of North Carolina and Calderon, 22, first signed in 2018. They pitched in the Florida State League and Florida Complex Leagues, respectively, in 2022.

Palm Beach

  • RHP Joseph King – 3.0 IP – 1 H – 0 R – 0 BB – 3 SO  (Innings 1-3)
  • LHP Jack Lynch – 1.0 IP – 1 H – 0 R – 0 BB – 0 SO  (4th inning)

Offense was no-hit through 4 innings

TCN’s Tuesday Player of the Day

Joseph King

Though both tossed three scoreless innings each, Joseph King edged out Logan Gragg by allowing one baserunner (to two) and striking out three (compared to two).

King, 22, was St. Louis’ ninth-round draft pick last July from Cal-Berkeley. The right-hander has yet to appear in official game action as a professional but did pitch for Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic.

In the WBC, King was charged with one earned run in 2 1/3 innings (3.86 ERA) on three hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

Next games

On Wednesday, March 22, the Cardinals face their Miami Marlins counterparts. All four games will be held on the Marlins side of the Jupiter complex. Game time is 11:00 a.m. Eastern.
