Cardinals Minor League Notebook – September 19, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-0 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is Palm Beach LF Bryce Madron, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored as the Beach Birds claimed the Florida State League Championship.  Other standouts include Ian Petrutz, JJ Wetherholt, and Arquímedes Gamboa.

Memphis 5, Durham 4

The Triple-A Redbirds defeated the Bulls by a 5-4 score at AutoZone Park on Wednesday.

Sem Robberse started for Memphis. The right-hander pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits, struck out two and walked one.

Ryan Loutos relieved Robberse and threw two scoreless innings to earn the win. Chris Roycroft tossed the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his fifth save.

Durham went up 1-0 in the first inning. They added three runs in the top of the second to lead 4-0. Memphis answered with two runs in the home half of the second to cut the lead to 4-2. Matt Koperniak was hit by a pitch. Chandler Redmond hit a ground-rule double. Arquímedes Gamboa doubled to plate Koperniak and Redmond.

The Redbirds added one run in the third to shrink the lead to 4-3. Victor Scott singled and later scored on a single by Gavin Collins.

In the sixth, Memphis took the lead 5-4. Ramon Mendoza singled. Redmond drew a walk. Wade Stauss drove in Mendoza on a double. Redmond came home on a sac fly by Scott.

The Redbirds scored five runs on eight hits. Gamboa was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Gamboa made a throwing error.

Memphis is 71-73 on the season, 33-36 in the second half. They are in sixth place in the International League West, 12.5 games back of Columbus.

Thursday’s game:  vs. Durham, Quinn Mathews LHP (0-1, 7.59) vs. TBD (DUR) 6:45 CT.

Springfield Cardinals – Off

The Double-A Cardinals, up 1-0, entertain the Arkansas Travelers in Game 2 of the Texas League Division Series at Hammons Field on Thursday evening. If the Cardinals do not sweep, Game 3 will be in Springfield on Friday night.

Thursday’s game:  vs. Arkansas, Max Rajcic RHP (0-0, 0.00) vs. Brandyn Garcia LHP (0-0, 0.00) 6:35 CT.

Palm Beach 6, Lakeland 4 (Division Series Game 3)

The Palm Beach Cardinals defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers in the final game of the Florida State League Championship Series. The Cardinals are the 2024 Florida State League Champions.

Chin Wei-Lin started for Palm Beach. The right-hander pitched one scoreless inning with one hit allowed and one strikeout. Leonel Sequera followed Lin and surrendered one run in 2 2/3 innings. Gerardo Salas yielded two runs in 1 1/3 innings and was tagged with a blown save. Nolan Sparks allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings and earned the win. Luis Gastelum tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the save.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Bryce Madron singled and advanced on an error. Josh Kross drew a walk. Ian Petrutz doubled to score Madron and Kross.

Palm Beach added a run in the second to lead 3-0. Ryan Campos singled. Jon Jon Gazdar singled. Christian Martin was hit by a pitch. Campos scored on a force-out by Madron.

Lakeland put up one run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1. The Flying Tigers tied the game at 3-3 with two run scored in the fifth.

In the seventh, the Cardinals produced a three run rally to take the lead 6-3. Campos reached on an error. Gazdar walked. Madron plated Campos on a double. JJ Wetherholt drove in Gazdar and Madron on a triple.

Lakeland rallied for one run in the eighth to shrink the lead to 6-4, but the Beach Birds held on for the win.

Palm Beach scored six runs on six hits. Madron was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Petrutz had two RBI. Wetherholt also drove in two.

The Palm Beach Cardinals won the final series 2-1 and are the Florida State League Champions of 2024.

Thursday’s game:  No game; season is concluded.
