Cardinals Minor League Notebook – September 14, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-1 on Wednesday. Peoria and Palm Beach had an off day in the Division Series. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, C Pedro Pages, was 3-for-5 with two RBI in first-place Springfield’s win. Other standouts include Mike Antico, Aaron Antonini, Tekoah Roby and Nick Trogrlic-Iverson.

Memphis 2 at Norfolk 3

Never holding a lead, the Memphis Redbirds were edged by the Tides by one run in Norfolk on Wednesday. Starter Jake Woodford pitched three innings, gave up two runs on two hits, struck out two and walked four. Woodford took the loss.

Ryan Loutos threw two scoreless innings of relief. Grant Black surrendered one run in two innings. Andre Granillo tossed a scoreless eighth.

Norfolk scored one run in the first inning. Memphis tied the game in the second on a solo home run by Matt Koperniak.

The Tides added single runs in the third and seventh to lead 3-1. In the ninth, the Redbirds cut the final score to 3-2 on a solo home run by Juan Yepez.

Memphis scored two runs on five hits. Michael Siani was 2-for-4. The offense was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.

In the field, Thomas Saggese and César Prieto each made a throwing error.

The Memphis Redbirds (27-38) are 15 games out of first place in the International League West. They have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Thursday’s games:  at Norfolk, RHP Adam Kloffenstein (2-0, 2.17 with Mem) vs. Bruce Zimmerman LHP (4-6, 3.49) 11:05 am CT.

Springfield 7 at San Antonio 5

The first place Springfield Cardinals defeated the Missions by the score of 7-5 in San Antonio on Wednesday. Starter Tekoah Roby pitched three innings, gave up one run on three hits and struck out five.

Roy Garcia surrendered one run in the fourth and received the win. Nick Trogrlic-Iverson threw three scoreless innings. Jack Ralston relinquished three runs in 1 1/3 innings. Matt Svanson got the final two outs of the game.

Springfield took the lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Pedro Pages. San Antonio tied the game in the third.

The Cardinals added three runs in the top of the fourth to lead 4-1. Mike Antico hit a solo home run. Aaron Antonini followed with a two-run blast.

The Missions cut the lead to 4-2 in the home half of the fourth. In the seventh, Springfield widened the lead to 6-2. Arquimedes Gamboa singled. Noah Mendlinger and Chandler Redmond walked. Gamboa scored on a single by Pages. Antico flied into a force out and Mendlinger came home.

The Cardinals made it 7-2 in the top of the eighth as Antonini doubled and later scored on a sac fly by Mendlinger. San Antonio scored one in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 7-3.

The Missions rallied for two runs in the ninth against Ralston but fell short as the Cardinals won, 7-5.

The Springfield offense collected 13 hits and seven walks. Pages was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Antico was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Antonini was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Jacob Buchberger was 2-for-5. Gamboa was 2-for-3 plus drew two walks.

On the base paths, Gamboa and Errol Robinson each stole a base. In the field, Pages picked a runner off first base.

In the Texas League North, the Springfield Cardinals (36-29) are in first place, two games ahead of Wichita. The Cardinals magic number is three with four games to play.

Thursday’s game:  at San Antonio, Wilfredo Pereira RHP (9-8, 5.06) vs. Adam Mazur RHP (1-3, 4.64) 7:05 CT.

Peoria at Cedar Rapids (Division Series) – Off

Peoria is up 1-0 in the best of three series with the next two games (if needed) at Cedar Rapids.

Thursday’s game:  at Cedar Rapids, Ian Bedell RHP (0-0, 0.00) vs. Cory Lewis RHP (0-0, 0.00) 6:35 CT

Palm Beach vs. Jupiter (Division Series) – Off

Palm Beach is down 0-1 in the best of three with the next two games (if needed) as the home team at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.

Thursday’s game:  vs. Jupiter, Hancel Rincon RHP (0-0, 0.00) vs. Jacob Miller (0-0, 0.00) 5:30 CT.
