Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 8, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-2 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach DH Sammy Hernandez, was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Other standouts include Zack Showalter, Jonathan Mejia, Jose Suarez, Jimmy Crooks, and Matt Carpenter.

Memphis 4, Norfolk 9

The Triple-A Redbirds fell to the Tides by five runs at AutoZone Park on Tuesday. Starter Gordon Graceffo pitched 5 2/3 innings, gave up five runs on six hits, struck out four and walked four. Graceffo took the loss, his third of the season.

Josh James surrendered three runs in one inning of relief. Connor Thomas allowed one run in the final 1 1/3 innings.

The Tides went up 4-0 in the first inning, then made it 5-0 in the top of the second. In the home half of the second, Memphis scored one run as César Prieto doubled and later scored on a double by Jared Young.

The Redbirds shrunk the lead to 5-3 in the fifth on a two-run home run by Matt Carpenter. Memphis added a fourth run in the sixth. Jordan Walker singled and later came home on a single by Nick Raposo.

Norfolk answered with four runs in the seventh for the decisive 9-4 lead.

In his first rehab game with Memphis, Carpenter was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Young was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Walker was 2-for-3.

Memphis is 17-16 on the season.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Norfolk, RHP Sem Robberse (4-0, 1.77) vs. Justin Armbruester RHP (0-2, 10.98) 6:05 CT.

Springfield 5 at NW Arkansas 9

The Double-A Cardinals lost at the Naturals by a 9-5 score on Tuesday. Starter Tink Hence had his worst outing of the season. The right-handed prospect pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up six runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked two. Hence took the loss, his first of 2024.

Ryan Shreve threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Leonardo Taveras hurled a scoreless seventh. Matt Svanson surrendered three big insurance runs for the home team in the eighth.

Springfield scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth. Jeremy Rivas walked and stole second base. Nathan Church plated him with a single.

NW Arkansas scored six runs in the home half fifth to take the 6-1 lead. The Cardinals cut the lead to 6-4 in the seventh. Rivas walked, Bryan Torres singled and Church walked. Jimmy Crooks hit a bases clearing double.

The Cardinals added one more run in the eighth to pull within one. Noah Mendlinger singled and later scored on a single by Torres. The Naturals put the game away with three runs in the home eighth.

The Cardinals scored five runs on seven hits. Torres was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Crooks had three RBI.

On the base paths, Rivas stole his seventh base of the season. Church swiped his seventh bag. Torres stole his 13th base.

Springfield is 18-9 this season.

Wednesday’s game:  at NW Arkansas, Tekoah Roby RHP (1-1, 6.94) vs. Mason Barnett RHP (1-0, 3.42) 7:05 CT.

Peoria at Beloit (postponed)

This game was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 8.

Wednesday’s games:  at Beloit, Inohan Paniagua RHP (1-2, 4.26) vs. Emmett Olson LHP (1-0, 0.00) 11:10 am CT (Game 1). LH Cooper Hjerpe (0-1, 5.28) vs. TBD (Game 2).

Palm Beach 6 at Jupiter 5

The Palm Beach Cardinals edged the Hammerheads by a 6-5 score at Roger Dean Stadium on Tuesday. Starter Gerardo Salas pitched four innings, gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Angel Cuenca surrendered one run in two innings of relief. Zack Showalter tossed the final three scoreless innings on one hit, one walk and with five strikeouts.

The Beach Birds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Johnfrank Salazar doubled and later scored on a single by Kade Kretzschmar.

Jupiter answered with three runs in the home second to take a 3-1 lead. The Hammerheads made it 4-1 in the fourth.

Palm Beach cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth. Sammy Hernandez and Miguel Villarroel singled. Hernandez scored on a single by Jose Cordoba. Villarroel came home on a force out by Chase Davis.

In the sixth, Jupiter increased their lead to 5-3. The Cardinals scored one in the seventh to shrink the gap to 5-4. Villarroel singled and later crossed the plate on a force out by Trey Paige.

The Beach Birds added two runs in the ninth to win 6-5. Hernandez and Paige walked. Davis plated Hernandez on a single. Paige scored on a single by Salazar.

Hernandez was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Salazar was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Villarroel was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Davis had two RBI.

In the field, Salazar made two fielding errors.

Palm Beach is 16-12 on the season.

Wednesda’s game:  at Jupiter, RH Darlin Saladin (1-0, 3.00) vs. Tristan Stevens RHP (2-2, 5.11) 5:30 CT.

FCL Cardinals 11, FCL Astros 9

The rookie-level Cardinals walked off the Astros in an 11-9 slugfest on Tuesday. Starter Nelfy Ynfante pitched two innings, gave up one run on three hits, struck out four and walked one.

Wilmer Ortega surrendered two runs in two innings of relief. Antoni Cuello yielded five runs, four earned, in the fifth. Hunter Hayes allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings. Yordy Herrera tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his second win.

The Astros scored single runs in the second and third innings. The Cardinals answered with four runs in the home third to lead 4-2. Yancel Guerrero, Yaisel Ramos and Yordalin Pena walked. Guerrero scored on a balk. Jonathan Mejia followed with a three-run home run to center field.

The Astros continued to score in every inning, adding a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth to lead 9-4.

In the seventh, the Cards pulled to within 9-5 on a solo home run by Guerrero. They rallied in the ninth with six runs to win 11-9. Samil De La Rosa and Pena singled. Mejia walked to load the bases. Heriberto Caraballo singled to drive in De La Rosa. Pena came home on a balk. Arfeni Batista reached on an error and Mejia and Caraballo scored. With the score tied, Jose Suarez hit a walk off two-run home run.

The Cardinals scored 11 runs on seven hits. Pena was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Mejia had three RBI and two runs scored. Suarez drove in two.

On the base paths, De La Rosa stole his first base. Pena made a fielding error. Cuello committed an error on a pickoff. Pena had an outfield assist at third base. Ynfante and Ortega each picked a runner off second base.

The Cardinals are 2-1 on the season.
