The scoreless contest ended the next inning when the Marlins scored three against reliever Jovi Galvez (L, 0-1).  Galvez yielded two hits and three walks, resulting in three tallies, one earned, in his sole inning of work.

Righty Luis Gastelum faced the minimum over two frames, striking out two in his 2024 debut.  Gastelum was The Cardinal Nation’s 2023 Rookie Pitcher of the Year.

Juan Severino allowed a run on a lead-off double and two-out single in the eighth-inning, his second frame on the mound.  The 19-year-old walked one.

Offensively, the Cardinals were held to three hits, all singles, and three walks against 18 strikeouts.  Center fielder and number three bat Yordalin Pena went 1-for 4 with a K while shortstop Arfeni Batista and first baseman Miguel Vargas, the seven and eight hitters, both went 1-for-3 with two and one strikeouts, respectively.  All three free passes were issued to right fielder Yasiel Ramos who hit second.

Defensively, Batista committed a throwing error, his first, and reliever Galvez picked off a runner at second.

Tuesday’s game:  vs FCL Astros (0-1), 12:00 pm ET, RH Nelfy Ynfante (FCL debut) vs. TBD
