Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 6, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 3-1 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day Hancel Rincon pitched eight innings with only one unearned run on three hits and five strikeouts in Palm Beach’s win. Other standouts include Noah Mendlinger, Masyn Winn, and L.J. Jones.

Memphis 2, Jacksonville 6 (11 innings)

The Memphis Redbirds lost a heartbreaker to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in 11 innings on Friday night at AutoZone Park. In his first start of 2023, Kyle Leahy pitched four innings, gave up one run on four hits, struck out four and walked two.

Newly arrived from Springfield, Dalton Roach surrendered one run in three innings of relief. Andre Pallante tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Kodi Whitley relinquished four runs, three earned, in the 11th and took the loss.

Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the third on a solo home run by Masyn Winn. Jacksonville tied it up in the fourth.

The Redbirds scored one run in the sixth to go up 2-1 on a second long ball by Winn. The Jumbo Shrimp tied the game again in the seventh.

The contest went into extra innings. In the top of the 11th, Jacksonville put up four runs to take the lead. Memphis did not answer in the bottom of the inning.

Winn was 2-for-5, both home runs, so had two RBI and two runs scored. Jordan Walker was 2-for-4.

In the field, Oscar Mercado had an outfield assist at third base.

Memphis is 20-11 on the season and is in second place in the International League West, percentage points behind the Iowa Cubs.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Jacksonville, LHP Matthew Liberatore (3-1, 2.14) vs. RHP Johnny Cueto 3:05 CT.

Springfield 6, Arkansas 4

The Springfield Cardinals defeated the Travelers in a 6-4 contest at Hammons Field on Friday. Starter Kenny Hernandez pitched seven innings, gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits, struck out six and walked one. The left-hander earned his third win of the season.

Andre Granillo relieved and threw a scoreless eighth. Logan Sawyer allowed a run in the ninth but still received his second save.

Arkansas took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Springfield scored two in the home half of the inning to go up 2-1 on a home run by L.J. Jones.

In the fourth, Jones singled and scored on a double by Irving Lopez and the Cardinals led 3-1. A two-run home run by Chandler Redmond, his 10th of the season, put Springfield up 5-1.

The Travelers cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals answered with an RBI triple by Mike Antico to make it 6-3.

Arkansas added a final run in the ninth.

Jones was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Lopez was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Redmond drove in two.

Antico and Pedro Pages each made a fielding error.

Springfield is 11-13 on the season and is in fourth place in the Texas League North, 4.5 games back of Tulsa.

Peoria 9, Wisconsin 6

The Peoria Chiefs defeated the error-prone Timber Rattlers on Friday at Dozer Park on Friday. Four miscues by the visitors led to four unearned runs for the Chiefs.

Starter Zane Mills pitched six innings, gave up four runs on nine hits and struck out five to earn his third win of the season.

Edgar Manzo relieved and threw a scoreless seventh. Alfredo Ruiz surrendered one run while recording one out. Chris Roycroft relinquished one run in the final 1 2/3 innings but received his third save.

Wisconsin went up 3-0 in the first inning. Peoria responded with two runs in the second. Fernando Hernandez reached on an error. Noah Mendlinger doubled to score Hernandez. Mendlinger advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.

The Chiefs took the lead in the third. Victor Scott II walked. Aaron McKeithan singled. Jimmy Crooks walked to load the bases. Jeremy Rivas plated Scott II on the ground out. McKeithan scored on a ground out by Osvaldo Tovalin.

The Timber Rattlers tied the game in the top of the fifth, but Peoria answered with two runs in the home half. Scott II reached second base on an error and stole third. He scored on a single by Crooks. Rivas doubled moving Crooks to third. Crooks scored on a ground out by Tovalin.

In the sixth, Mendlinger and Elijah Cabell hit solo home runs back to back. A third run scored on a double by Scott II. Peoria led 9-4. Wisconsin scored one run in each of the eighth and ninth to make it 9-6.

Mendlinger was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Scott II was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Rivas was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Tovalin had two RBI.

On the base paths, Scott II stole three bases. His 20 for the season leads the Midwest League. Cabell was picked off and caught stealing.

Peoria is 13-12 and is in third place in the Midwest League West, 2.5 games back of Beloit.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Wisconsin, Alex Cornwell LHP (2-1, 3.00) vs. Alexander Cornielle RHP (0-0, 3.3.8) 6:35 CT.

Palm Beach 3, Daytona 1

Behind a strong pitching performance by Hancel Rincon, the Palm Beach Cardinals defeated the Tortugas on Friday at Roger Dean Stadium.  Starter Rincon pitched eight innings, gave up one unearned run on three hits and struck out five to earn his fourth win of the season.

Edwin Nunez tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his second save.

The game was scoreless until the fourth when Daytona scored one run to take a 1-0 lead. The Beach Birds quickly tied it as Leonardo Bernal singled and scored on a triple by R.J. Yeager.

Palm Beach took a 2-1 lead in the seventh. Darlin Moquete singled and advanced to second on a balk. Moquete scored on a single by Chris Rotondo.

Bernal drove in the Cardinals third and final run in the eighth on a double.

Bernal and Yeager were each 2-for-4 with an RBI.

In the field, Moquete made a throwing error, which led to the unearned run.

Palm Beach is 14-11 on the season and is in second place in the FSL East, 0.5 games back of Jupiter.
