In the 1-2 Wednesday across the St. Louis Cardinals farm system, Player of the Day Jhon Torres plated three runs to lead Peoria over Kane County. Memphis lost a low-scoring nail-biter, Springfield was washed away at home and Palm Beach was blanked by Daytona.

Results for games played Wednesday, May 29th.

San Antonio 3 at Memphis 2

Jake Woodford (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Memphis received a solid outing from starting pitcher Jake Woodford, but fell 3-2 to the Missions on Wednesday night at AutoZone Park. The Redbirds’ eighth straight loss dropped their record to 23-31 on the season.

The 22-year-old righty (3-2, 3.11) allowed all three runs in the third inning but followed with four scoreless frames. Woodford took the loss despite equaling his season high for both strikeouts and innings with seven apiece, and permitting only five hits and three walks. Relievers Chris Beck and Tommy Layne pitched a spotless inning each to keep the game within reach.

Third baseman Max Schrock led the Redbirds attack with a single and double, and though leadoff man and center fielder Tommy Edman went hitless (lowering his average to .300 and OPS to .854), he drew two free passes and stole his sixth base without being caught. Second baseman Ramon Urias went 0-for-4 but participated in a quartet of twin killings — two started by Schrock from the hot corner.

Thursday’s game: vs. Oklahoma City, Anthony Shew (1-1, 2.37) 7:05 CT.

Springfield vs. Tulsa rained out

Tulsa at Springfield was rained out at Hammons Field on Wednesday. The game will be made up Thursday as part of a pair of seven-inning contests.

Thursday’s Game 1: vs. Tulsa, Angel Rondon (0-0, 4.09), 5:10 CT.
Thursday’s Game 2: vs. Tulsa, Austin Warner (2-4, 4.01)

Daytona 5 at Palm Beach 0

Tommy Parsons (Peoria Chiefs)

With Florida State League batting leader Julio Rodriguez out of the lineup, Palm Beach (31-20) managed just five singles and a double while suffering a 5-0 home whitewash at the hands of the Tortugas. Designated hitter Yariel Gonzalez singled and doubled for the club’s sole multi-hit performance (a leadoff single and one-out double) but was stranded each time. Justin Toerner and Lars Nootbaar each went 0-for-4, and Toerner is now batting .233 and slugging .289 for the unmerry month of May.

Starter Tommy Parsons (3-1, 2.30 since the promotion to High-A) did his job but took the defeat, twirling five innings and allowing one unearned run on three hits and two walks. Righty Ronnie Williams and lefty Patrick Dayton yielded two runs apiece out of the pen to cement the loss. Only Ramon Santos was unscathed, tossing a scoreless ninth with a pair of whiffs.

Thursday’s game: vs. Daytona, Alex Fagalde (5-3, 2.40) 5:30 CT.

Peoria 5, Kane County 2

Jhon Torres (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Player of the Day Jhon Torres went 2-for-3 including a tiebreaking bases-clearing double, as Peoria lifted their record to 22-29 with a come-from-behind 5-2 home victory over the Cougars.

19-year old right fielder Torres has three multi-hit games in his last five, going 8-for-17 in total, after starting the year in a cavernous 2-for-39 hole. Third baseman Nolan Gorman was the Chiefs’ other meaningful contributor on offense, with a single, walk, and two double plays started. (Gorman now has a .932 fielding percentage and 8-to-7 ratio of DP’s to errors this year, after a poor Peoria percentage of .862 and ratio of 5-to-12 last season.)

Colin Schmid was the starter and winner for Peoria, conceding just two runs, one earned, over six stanzas. The 21-year-old southpaw scattered nine hits and walked no one while fanning five Cougars. Edgar Escobar pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings despite walking three men, lowering his ERA to 1.96 on the year — only to be bettered by lefty Evan Sisk who threw 1 2/3 scoreless and lowered his ERA to 1.83 while recording his first save of the season.

Thursday’s game: vs. Kane County, Michael Brettell (1-1, 3.80) 6:35 CT.
