Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 3, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 4-0 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, CF Mike Antico, was 2-for-4 with three RBI in Springfield’s win. Other standouts include Luken Baker, Masyn Winn, Ian Bedell and Michael Curialle.

Memphis 6, Jacksonville 4

The Memphis Redbirds prevailed over the Jumbo Shrimp in a 6-4 contest at AutoZone Park on Tuesday. Starter Connor Thomas pitched 5 2/3 innings, gave up three runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked four to earn his fourth consecutive win.

Ryan Loutos surrendered one run 1 1/3 innings of relief. Jake Walsh threw a scoreless eighth and Kodi Whitley tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his second save.

Memphis put up three runs in the first inning to take the lead. Masyn Winn led off with a single. Juan Yepez was hit by a pitch. Jordan Walker drew a walk to load the bases. Moises Gomez grounded into a double play and Winn scored. Ivan Herrera walked. The Cardinal Nation’s April Player of the Month Luken Baker plated Walker and Herrera on a double.

Jacksonville cut the lead to 3-1 in the second. The Redbirds responded in the third when Gomez tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

The Jumbo Shrimp pulled to within 4-3 in the top of the fourth, but Memphis scored another run in the home half of the fourth on a hit by pitch to Gomez with the bases loaded.

In the seventh, Jacksonville posted their final run to make it a 5-4 lead for the Redbirds. Memphis widened the tally to 6-4 in the eighth. Following walks to Juniel Querecuto and Kramer Robertson and a wild pitch to advance both, Winn struck out on a dropped third strike and Querecuto scored.

Gomez was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Winn was 3-for-5. Baker drove in two.

On the base paths, Oscar Mercado stole a base and was caught stealing.

Memphis is 19-9 on the season and is in first place in the International League West.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Jacksonville, RHP Michael McGreevy (1-0, 4.50 at AAA) vs. RHP George Soriano, 12:05 CT.

Springfield 8, Arkansas 6

The Springfield Cardinals defeated the Travelers by an 8-6 score at Hammons Field on Tuesday. Starter Brandon Komar pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up four runs on four hits, struck out five and walked one.

Nick Trogrlic-Iverson relieved and surrendered one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings. Logan Sawyer allowed one run in the ninth and received the win, his first of the season.

Springfield got on the board first with one run in the first inning. Arquimedes Gamboa and Matt Koperniak singled. Koperniak was caught stealing and Gamboa scored.

The game remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when Arkansas took a 2-1 lead. The Travelers added two more runs in the sixth and one run in the top of the seventh.

The Cardinals cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run by Jacob Buchberger. In the sixth, Springfield pulled ahead, 8-5. All six runs scored on the long ball. Chandler Redmond blasted a two-run home run to right center field. Up next, Nick Raposo thumped a solo shot to left field. Mike Antico added a three-run long ball to right field.

Arkansas put up one more run in the ninth.

Antico was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Raposo was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Redmond drove in two.

On the base paths, Koperniak was caught stealing. In the field, Gamboa made a throwing error. Raposo had a passed ball.

Springfield is 10-12 on the season and is in fourth place in the Texas League North, four games back of Arkansas.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Arkansas, RHP Wilfredo Pereira (0-1, 4.11) vs. Emerson Hancock RHP (2-1, 5.29) 11:30 a.m. CT.

Peoria 5, Wisconsin 4

The Peoria Chiefs edged the Timber Rattlers in a one-run contest at Dozer Park on Tuesday. Starter Dionys Rodriguez pitched 2 2/3 innings, gave up four runs on two hits, stuck out three and walked three.

Ian Bedell threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Matt Hickey hurled two scoreless innings and Andrew Marrero tossed a scoreless ninth. Bedell earned his second win and Marrero earned his fourth save.

Peoria took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Thomas Francisco and Osvaldo Tovalin singled. Tyler Reichenborn was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch sent Francisco home. Tovalin scored on a single by Noah Mendlinger.

Wisconsin responded in the top of the third with four runs to take the lead. The Chiefs quickly tied it in the home half with two runs scored on a sac fly by Aaron McKeithan and a stolen base with a throwing error.

Peoria took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on a single by Reichenborn and the bullpen did the rest.

The Chiefs offense scored five runs on six hits. Francisco was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

On the base paths, Francisco stole his second base of the season. Francisco Hernandez stole his third base. Mendlinger, Nathan Church and Jeremy Rivas were each caught stealing. Rivas was picked off first base.

Peoria is 10-12 on the season and is in third place in the Midwest League West, 4.5 games back of Beloit.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Wisconsin, Cooper Hjerpe LHP (1-2, 6.75) vs. Cameron Wagner RHP (1-3, 7.79) 11:05 a.m. CT.

Palm Beach 9, Daytona 5

The Palm Beach Cardinals beat the Tortugas at Roger Dean Stadium on Tuesday. Starter Max Rajcic, TCN’s Pitcher of the Month for April, pitched four innings, gave up three runs on four hits, struck out four and walked two.

Angel Cuenca relieved Rajcic and surrendered one run in three innings pitched. Edwin Nunez allowed one run in the final two innings.

Daytona took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. In the third, the Beach Birds cut the lead to 3-2. The inning began with a walk to Darlin Moquete. Lizandro Espinoza singled. Michael Curialle singled to score Moquete and Espinoza.

Palm Beach went up 4-3 in the fourth on a sac fly by Espinoza and a single by Brody Moore. They widened their tally in the fifth with one run on a Curialle single followed by two stolen bases and an error.

Daytona scored their fourth run in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals answered with four runs in the home half of the sixth on a sac fly by Leonardo Bernal, a two-run triple by R.J. Yeager, and a wild pitch.

The Tortugas added a final run in the ninth.

Michael Curialle

Curialle was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Yeager was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Won-Bin Cho was 2-for-4.

On the base paths, Curialle stole his third base of the season. Chris Rotondo stole his first base of the season.

In the field, Curialle made a fielding error.

Palm Beach is 12-10 on the season and is in second place in the FSL East, 0.5 game back of Jupiter.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Daytona, LHP Pete Hansen (1-0, 2.79) vs. TBA 5:30 CT.
