Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 29, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-2 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Players of the Day is the Memphis pitching of Zack Thompson, Andre Granillo and Chris Roycroft, who combined for nine one-hit, scoreless innings. Other standouts include Jordan Walker, Alex Iadisernia, Darlin Moquete and Jose Suarez.

Memphis 2, Nashville 0

The Triple-A Redbirds blanked the Sounds in a 2-0 victory at AutoZone Park on Tuesday. Starter Zack Thompson pitched five scoreless, no-hit innings, struck out five and walked five.

Andre Granillo relieved Thompson and threw two scoreless, no-hit innings of relief to earn his first win. Chris Roycroft tossed a scoreless, one-hit ninth to earn his first save.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when Memphis scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Nick Raposo reached on an error and later scored on a double by Victor Scott II. Jordan Walker plated Scott on a double.

The Redbirds scored two runs on six hits. Walker was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

On the bases, Scott stole his 14th base of the season.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Nashville, Michael McGreevy RHP (2-5, 5.13) vs. Chad Patrick RHP (3-1, 3.02) 7:05 CT.

Springfield 2 at Wichita 1

The Double-A Cardinals defeated the Wind Surge by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday. Starter Max Rajcic pitched five innings, gave up one run on four hits, struck out two and walked three to earn his fifth win this season.

Leonardo Taveras relieved Rajcic and threw two scoreless innings. Matt Svanson tossed the final two scoreless innings to earn his seventh save.

Wichita went up 1-0 in the fourth inning. Springfield came back to plate two in the fifth to lead 2- 1. Noah Mendlinger singled. Chandler Redmond singled and Mendlinger advanced to third. Mendlinger scored on a balk. Jeremy Rivas singled. Redmond came home on a ground out by Bryan Torres.

The Cardinal offense scored two runs on 10 hits. Mendlinger and Rivas were both 2-for-4. Jimmy Crooks was 2-for-3. Torres had the only RBI.

On the bases, Torres and Rivas were each caught stealing. Torres was picked off first.

Springfield is 26-20 on the season.

Wednesday’s game:  at Wichita, Ian Bedell RHP (1-2, 6.53) vs. Jaylen Nowlin LHP (3-2, 3.93) 7:05 CT.

Peoria 3 at Lansing 4

The High-A Chiefs lost a close one 4-3 against the Lugnuts on Tuesday. Starter Hancel Rincon pitched 5 2/3 innings, gave up two runs on six hits, struck out six and walked four.

Tanner Jacobson relieved Rincon and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Tyler Bradt surrendered two runs in the final 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Lansing took the lead 1-0 in the first inning. The Chiefs tied the game in the top of the fifth. Darlin Moquete was hit by a pitch, stole second, and advanced to third on an error. Zach Levenson plated Moquete on a single.

The Lugnuts regained the lead with a run in the home half of the fifth. Peoria tied the game again in the seventh. Moquete singled. Levenson singled and Moquete advanced to third. Moquete came home on a sac fly by Alex Iadisernia.

The Chiefs took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth. Moquete tripled and scored on a single by Iadisernia. Lansing scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win in a walk-off 4-3.

The Chiefs scored three runs on nine hits. Iadisernia was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Moquete was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Levenson was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

On the bases, Moquete stole his third base of the season. Osvaldo Tovalin swiped his third bag. Levenson was caught stealing twice.

On defense, Jacobson made a throwing error.

Peoria is 15-31 on the season.

Wednesday’s game:  at Lansing, Brycen Mautz LHP (0-5, 6.56) vs. Luis Morales RHP (1-0, 4.67) 10:05 am CT.

 

Palm Beach, Tampa (suspended)

The game between the Low-A Cardinals and the Tarpons was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning due to inclement weather. The Cardinals and the Tarpons were tied at five apiece after a Kade Kretzschmar two-run blast tied the game in the fifth. The game will be resumed tomorrow, Wednesday, May 29 prior to the regularly scheduled game.

Wednesday’s games:  vs. Tampa, TBD vs. TBD 3:30 CT (completion of suspended game)

FCL Cardinals 5 at FCL Nationals 7 (10 innings)

On Tuesday, the Florida Complex League Cardinals fell to the Nationals in a 7-5 extra-inning contest. Starter Ronny Oliver pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up two runs on four hits, struck out three and walked four.

Juan Severino relieved Oliver and surrendered one run in two innings. Alexander Beltre threw 1/3 scoreless innings. Omar Yanez hurled a scoreless eighth. Wilmer Ortega yielded four runs, three earned, in the ninth. Ortega took the loss.

The Cardinals went up 2-0 in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by Jose Suarez. The Nationals scored one run in the home half of the third to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Nationals tied the game in the fourth. The Cardinals regained the lead 3-2 in the fifth. Sami De La Rosa singled and scored on a double by Yordalin Pena.

The Nationals again tied the game in the seventh. The Cardinals went up 4-3 in the top of the ninth. De La Rosa was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Mejia.

The game became tied for a third time in the bottom of the ninth when the Nationals added a run. The game went into the 10th and the Cardinals put up a run to lead 5-4. With Pena on second base, Suarez singled. Pena scored on a fielder’s choice by Miguel Vargas.

The Nationals produced a three-run bottom of the tenth to win in a walk-off 7-4.

The Cardinals scored five runs on eight hits. Suarez was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Pena was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

On the bases, Yaisel Ramos stole his third base of the season. De La Rosa swiped two bags. Vargas stole two bags. Suarez stole his first base.

On defense, Mejia and Justin Guerrero each made a fielding error. Heriberto Caraballo made an error on a pickoff. Suarez and Ramos each had an outfield assist at home plate.

The Cardinals are 9-10 on the season.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. FCL Mets, TBD vs. TBD 11:00 am CT.
