On Monday, the Florida Complex League Cardinals lost 4-1. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, starter Yadiel Batista, threw five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five. Other standouts include Jonathan Mejia and Charles Harrison. We also set up Tuesday’s full system schedule.

Memphis – off
The upcoming week finds Triple-A Memphis (27-24) hosting Nashville (MIL) in a battle for sole possession of third place in the International League West Division. Both squads trail first-place Omaha (KC) by 7 ½ games in the standings.

Springfield – off
Double-A Springfield (25-20) has gone 5-5 over its last 10 contests, slipping into second place in the Texas League North Division standings, ½ game behind Arkansas (SEA). After two weeks at home, The S-Cards head to the fifth and last-place Wichita Wind Surge (MIN).

Peoria – off
High-A Peoria (15-30) remains mired in sixth place in the six-team Midwest League West Division, 13 ½ games back of the division-leading Cedar Rapids (MIN), against whom the Chiefs just finished a 2-4 six-game home series. Up next is a trip to Lansing (OAK) who is in a three-way tie for third place in the Midwest League East Division standings, four games behind both Great Lakes (LAD) and Lake County (CLE).
Tuesday’s game: at Lansing (22-23), 6:05 pm ET/5:05 pm CT, RH Hancel Rincón (2-3, 4.09) vs. TBD
Palm Beach – off
Low-A Palm Beach (25-20) remains atop the Florida State League East Division standings, a game up on Jupiter (MIA). The Beach Birds will try to expand on that lead this week as they host West Division cellar-dwelling Tampa (NYY).

Cardinals 1 at FCL Astros 4
The FCL Cardinals were held to just one hit, resulting in a 4-1 road loss to the FCL Astros. The defeat dropped the visitors to 9-9 while the fifth-place home squad won for only the fifth time against 12 losses. The third-place FCL Cardinals trail the division-leading Marlins by 3 ½ games in the Florida Complex League East Division standings.
The sole hit came in the top of the eighth with the FCL Cardinals trailing 3-0. Number eight bat Alejandro Loaiza worked a one-out base-on-balls, the catcher advanced a base when third baseman Yancel Guerrero was plunked. A swinging K made it two on and two out for number two hitter Jonathan Mejia. The shortstop lined a single up the middle, plating Loaiza. Mejia’s only hit in four at-bats made the 19-year-old one of only six Cardinals base runners overall.
Lefty starter Yadiel Batista blanked his opponents on four hits and two walks over five frames. The Cuban fanned five.
Batista handed a scoreless contest over to reliever Charles Harrison (L, 0-1) who was a victim of both his lack of control and a Cardinals miscue The righty was tagged for an unearned tally in his only inning of work, the run generated via a lead-off single, two wild pitches advancing the runner to third plus a throwing error by Loaiza on a swinging K which scored the third base runner and left the batter at first.
Right-handers Randel Clemente and Antoni Cuello combined to pitch the final two stanzas. Clemente retired only one of the three batters he faced, yielding two runs on two free passes issued. Both base runners scored under Cuello’s watch. The 21-year-old Dominican permitted a run of his own on two hits and a walk over 1 2/3 innings.
Defensively, Loaiza’s errant throw was his second bobble of 2024. Starter Batista helped his scoreless cause by picking off a runner at second with two on and one away in the first.
