Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 26, 2026

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league system was 1-2 on Monday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield’s Trey Paige, belted a go-ahead three-run home run in a two-hit day. Other standouts include Travis Honeyman, Rainiel Rodriguez, Michael Watson, Juan Rujano, Royelny Strop and Sebastian Dos Santos.

Memphis Redbirds (off day)

The Triple-A Memphis Redbirds were off Monday as they traveled to Werner Park in Papillion, Nebraska, for a six-game series with the Omaha Storm Chasers, beginning Tuesday.

The Redbirds enter the week following a series split with the Iowa Cubs on the road.

Blaze Jordan

Blaze Jordan continues to have a strong season with the Redbirds. The 23-year-old holds the highest batting average of players currently on the roster at .317. Jordan is third on the Redbirds in home runs (8) and second on the team in RBI (26).

Catcher Leo Bernal is providing a strong bat to the lineup in his first Triple-A season as he ranks fourth on the team in RBI (22), fifth in hits (36), and fourth in walks (21). The 22-year-old has seen action in 41 games, the third-most on the club.

On the mound, left-hander Bruce Zimmermann has thrown the most innings at 50 ⅓ and earned the most wins in the rotation with four through 10 starts. Zimmermann has also recorded the most strikeouts on the staff at 63.

Max Rajcic

Right-hander Max Rajcic has been a dominant bullpen arm. Rajcic holds a 1.71 ERA through 18 appearances (one start) and 31 ⅔ innings. The 24-year-old has struck out 35 hitters.

Memphis is 30-21 on the season. They are tied with Nashville for first place in the International League West Division.

Tuesday’s game: at Omaha (KC). Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM CT.

Springfield Cardinals 11, Wichita Wind Surge 6

The Double-A Springfield Cardinals bested the Wichita Wind Surge in the opener of a seven-game set on Monday at Route 66 Stadium.

Brandt Thompson started his sixth game in his ninth appearance for Springfield. The right-hander threw 4 ⅓ innings and allowed six runs on seven hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.

Hunter Hayes secured the final two outs of the fifth inning. Austin Love followed with a shutout sixth. Left-hander Michael Watson fired two scoreless frames with three strikeouts, collecting his third win of the season. Jack Findlay fanned two in a shutout ninth as he lowered his ERA to 1.54.

Springfield grabbed an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Noah Mendlinger drew a lead-off walk and Rainiel Rodriguez singled. Ryan Campos connected for a one-out single to bring Mendlinger home. Jon Jon Gazdar lined a single to score Rodriguez.

The Wind Surge trimmed the lead in half in the top of the third.

Springfield took the run back in the home half. Chase Davis singled and swiped second base. Gazdar and Zach Levenson took back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. Travis Honeyman brought Davis to the plate via a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 Cardinals lead.

Wichita plated two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to move ahead 6-3.

Springfield narrowed the gap to one in a two-run sixth. Honeyman launched his third home run of the year, a solo shot.

Trey Paige followed with a single. Mendlinger legged out a bunt single. Rodriguez laced a single to bring Paige home for a 6-5 score.

The Cardinals regained the lead with three runs in the seventh. Campos walked and stole second. Honeyman was hit by a pitch. Paige belted a three-run home run, his first of the season and the 10th of his career, to put the Cardinals in front 8-6.

Springfield added three insurance runs in the eighth. Rodriguez singled and Davis walked. Campos reached first on a fielder’s choice, with Rodriguez coming home as the first baseman made a throwing error. Gazdar singled to load the bases. Davis crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Campos touched home plate on a second wild pitch of the inning to extend the Springfield lead to 11-6.

Springfield collected five hits with runners in scoring position in the win.

The Cardinals scored 11 runs on 12 hits. Paige was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a home run for three RBI. Honeyman walked, scored twice, hit a home run, and notched two RBI. Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Gazdar was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Campos walked, singled, scored two runs, and recorded an RBI.

On the bases, Campos stole both second base and third base to increase his season total to seven. Gazdar swiped his fourth bag. Davis snagged his ninth base.

The Cardinals did not commit an error.

Springfield is 19-27 on the season. They reside in last place in the Texas League North Division.

Tuesday’s game: vs. Wichita. LHP Mason Molina (0-2, 3.38) vs. RHP Eli Jones (2-2, 4.27) 6:35 PM CT.

Peoria Chiefs (off day)

The High-A Peoria Chiefs were off Monday, as they headed to Neuroscience Group Field in Appleton, Wisconsin, for a seven-game set with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, starting Tuesday.

Peoria will look to continue their winning ways after a 4-2 homestand against the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Jesus Baez

Jesús Báez has swung a powerful bat thus far as he leads the Chiefs with eight home runs and is tied for third on the team in RBI (24). Won-Bin Cho has also put together a strong offensive year, as he ranks second on the team in home runs (seven) and RBI (28).

Jalin Flores leads the Chiefs with 31 RBI. Josh Kross has extended his team lead in hits with 44, nine more than any other Chief. Kross has also hit six home runs and driven in 20 runs.

Blake Aita

On the mound, Blake Aita has turned in nine solid starts. The right-hander holds a 3.62 ERA across 37 ⅓ innings and 46 strikeouts, the third-most strikeouts on the staff. The team’s innings leader, Leonel Sequera, has struck out a team-high 48 batters over 38 ⅓ innings.

Patrick Galle has been a reliable relief arm since his arrival from Palm Beach. Galle holds a 2.25 ERA across nine appearances and 12 innings of work, collecting two saves in that time.

Peoria is 20-24 on the season after taking four of six from Cedar Rapids. They reside in fifth place in the Midwest League West Division.

Palm Beach Cardinals (off day)

The Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals were off Monday, as they headed home to Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium for a six-game series with the Lakeland Flying Tigers, beginning Tuesday.

The Cardinals will look to rebound after taking just two of six from the St. Lucie Mets.

Jonathan Mejia

Switch-hitting infielder Jonathan Mejía leads Palm Beach with six home runs and 27 RBI. Yordalin Peña has collected the most hits on the team with 31 and is tied for third on the team with three home runs.

Chase Heath has tallied the second-most hits on the team with 29. In his first 10 games, Michael Dattalo has hit a sharp .405 with 15 hits, along with more walks than strikeouts (6-to-5).

Jacob Odle

On the mound, right-hander Jacob Odle has struck out a team-best 51 hitters across seven starts in nine total appearances and 33 innings. Despite a 2-3 record, Odle holds a 1.91 ERA.

Jovi Gálvez has been dependable out of the bullpen with a sturdy 2.31 ERA over 11 relief appearances, 11 ⅔  innings, and with 13 strikeouts. Of relievers on the roster, Antoni Cuello and Nelfy Ynfante have two saves each.

Palm Beach is 24-21 on the season. They reside in second place in the Florida State League East Division, three games behind Jupiter.

FCL Cardinals 4, FCL Astros 6 (Game one, seven innings)

The Florida Complex League Cardinals dropped a close contest in game one of Monday’s home-away doubleheader with the FCL Astros.

Andrew Dutkanych IV made his second start for the Cardinals. The right-hander tossed 1 ⅓ innings and allowed one run on one hit, three walks, and no strikeouts.

Owen Rice recorded the final two outs of the second inning without giving up a run. Gabriel Chinchilla yielded four runs across 3 ⅔ innings, taking the loss. Brailyn Paulino gave up a run over the final 1 ⅓ innings.

The Cardinals struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Rehabbing Anyelo Encarnación (Peoria) was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a Sebastian Dos Santos groundout. Cristofer Lebrón hit a bloop-double to score Encarnación.

The Astros tied the game in the second and took a 4-1 lead in the third.

The Cardinals moved within two in the home third. With two outs, Dos Santos and Lebrón walked. Miguel Hernández lined a single to bring Dos Santos home.

The Astros added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to increase their lead to 6-2.

Down to their final three outs, the Cardinals looked to rally.

Encarnación lined a lead-off single. Dos Santos grounded out, retiring Encarnacion. Lebrón grounded into a forceout, with Dos Santos out. Hernández and Royelny Strop took back-to-back walks to load the bases. Juan Rujano connected for a single to score Lebrón and Hernández to narrow the gap to 6-4.

The Cardinals were unable to answer further.

The FCL Cardinals scored four runs on six hits. Rujano was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Hernández walked, singled, scored a run, and drove in a run. Lebrón walked, doubled, scored a run, and notched an RBI. Encarnación was 1-for-2 with a run scored in the second game of his rehab assignment, as he works to rejoin the Peoria Chiefs.

On the bases, Matthew Miura was caught stealing second.

The Cardinals turned two double plays in an errorless performance.

FCL Cardinals 10 at FCL Astros 15 (Game two, seven innings)

The FCL Cardinals lost a slugfest to the FCL Astros in game two of Monday’s twin bill.

Branneli Franco made his third start in his fourth appearance for the Cardinals. The right-hander pitched three innings and allowed three runs on three hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. Franco took the loss.

Giovanni Vargas yielded six runs, five earned, over 1 ⅓ innings in relief. Alejandro Lóaiza surrendered six runs and recorded just two outs. Jarol Baéz threw a scoreless sixth frame.

The Cardinals pounced first with a run in the top of the first inning. Cristofer Lebrón hit a lead-off triple and scored on a Sebastian Dos Santos single.

The Astros responded with six runs in the bottom of the fourth and nine runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 15-1 lead.

The Cardinals plated a run in the sixth. Dos Santos rocketed his third home run of the season, a solo blast, for a 15-2 score.

The Cardinals tried for a miraculous comeback in the top of the seventh, scoring eight runs, but falling short.

With one out, J.P. Cabrera walked and moved to third on a Bracewell Taveras double. Paulo Asprilla reached base on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Andru Arthur hit a double to plate Cabrera and Taveras. Lebrón drew a walk to load the bags. Miguel Hernández legged out an infield single, with Asprilla coming home. Strop belted a grand slam, his second long ball of the season, to bring the Cardinals within six at 15-9. Juan Rujano went back-to-back for his first home run of the season to move the Cardinals closer at 15-10. The rally ended there.

Royelny Strop

The FCL Cardinals scored 10 runs on 10 hits. Dos Santos was 3-for-4, including a home run and two RBI. Strop drove in four runs on a grand slam. Arthur doubled, scored a run, and notched two RBI. Rujano hit a solo home run. Lebrón drew two walks, tripled, scored twice, and drove in a run. Hernández singled, scored a run, and drove in a run. Taveras doubled and scored a run.

On the bases, Dos Santos was caught stealing second base.

On defense, catcher Asprilla made two throwing errors and was charged with a passed ball.

The FCL Cardinals are 5-11 on the season. They are off Tuesday as they prepare for a road contest with the FCL Astros on Wednesday.
