The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-2 on Saturday. Our Players of the Day are Springfield relievers Roel Ramirez, Jacob Patterson, Ronnie Williams, and Merandy Gonzalez, who combined to shut out the first-place Arkansas Travelers while scattering only five hits. They struck out nine and issued just one walk combined. Palm Beach also won behind starter Edgar Gonzalez.

The Redbirds were blanked by the Missions in front of a sell-out crowd of 10,041 at AutoZone Park on Saturday. The lackluster Memphis offense was limited to only four hits, singles from Tommy Edman, Tyler O’Neill, Drew Robinson, and Edmundo Sosa. Rangel Ravelo’s hitting streak ended at 19 games, one short of a share of the team record. The club went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.
In his return from the injured list, starter Anthony Shew pitched five innings and gave up three runs. The right hander fanned nine and walked two. Tommy Layne surrendered one run in two innings of relief. Chris Ellis took the final two scoreless innings.
Robinson stole his 10th base of the season. Max Schrock stole his sixth and seventh bags in 2019.
Memphis is 23-26 on the season and in second place in the PCL North, 5.5 games back of the Iowa Cubs.
Sunday’s game: vs. San Antonio, Genesis Cabrera (2-3, 6.35) 6:35 CT.
In a bullpen game in place of scheduled starter Harold Arauz, the Cardinals blanked the Travelers at Dickey-Stephens Park on Saturday. Roel Ramirez began with 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, striking out three and walking one. Jacob Patterson followed with 3 1/3, Ronnie Williams added two frames, and Merandy Gonzalez took the ninth. Patterson earned the win, Gonzalez, the save.
The lone Springfield run came in the fourth inning. Dylan Carlson singled and Evan Mendoza walked. After a Randy Arozarena grounded into a force out advanced the runners, a wild pitch brought Carlson home.
Carlson stole his eighth and ninth bases of the season, and also had an outfield assist. Arozarena stole his fourth base of 2019.
The Cardinals are 19-30 and are in last place in the Texas League North.
Sunday’s game: at Arkansas, Johan Oviedo (1-0, 4.98) 2:10 CT.
The Cardinals edged the Stone Crabs in Charlotte on Saturday. The Palm Beach offense got on the board in the second inning on a game-tying solo home run by Luken Baker. In the sixth, Palm Beach took the 2-1 lead on an RBI double by Scott Hurst.
Hurst and Lars Nootbaar had two hits. Hurst and Baker each had a RBI.
Starter Edgar Gonzalez tossed 6 2/3 innings and gave up one run on six hits. The right hander fanned seven and issued two free passes. Ben Yokley and Mitchell Osnowitz combined for the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Gonzalez earend his fourth win and Osnowitz his first save.
Catcher Julio Rodriguez picked a runner off first base.
The Cardinals are 30-18 on the season and are in first place in the FSL South.
Sunday’s game: at Charlotte, Perry DellaValle (2-2, 1.88) 11:30 am CT.
The Chiefs suffered a tough walk-off loss in Cedar Rapids on Saturday. Starter Alvaro Seijas pitched five innings and surrendered six runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking three. Freddy Pacheco hurled 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and taking a blown save. Losing pitcher Evan Sisk tossed the final 1 2/3, during which he allowed two runs.
To open the back-and-forth contest, Peoria scored two runs in the first via Nolan Gorman’s RBI single and a wild pitch.
Delvin Perez’ RBI single in the second broke the 2-2 tie. Cedar Rapids tied it up in the bottom frame, and scored three more runs in the third to take a 6-3 lead. The Chiefs added a run in the fifth on a single by Ivan Herrera. Peoria took the 7-6 lead in the sixth on a two-run double by Brendan Donovan and Gorman’s second RBI, via a double.
The Kernels tied the game again in the bottom of the seventh. The Chiefs took the 8-7 lead in the eighth on Herrera’s second RBI single, but that ended the Chiefs scoring. The Kernels re-tied the score in the bottom of the eighth and walked it off in the ninth.
Gorman and Herrera each had three hits and two driven in. Leadoff man Donovan scored three times. The Chiefs stole three bags – Perez’ seventh, Donovan’s second and Wadye Ynfante’s fourth of the season. Jhon Torres had an outfield assist.
The Chiefs are 21-27 on the season and are in seventh place in the Midwest League West.
