Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 20, 2025

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league system was 1-0 on Monday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, FCL Cardinals outfielder Hancel Almonte, was 2-for-3, plus two walks, a run scored, and two RBI. Other standouts include Yoerny Junco and Yadiel Batista.

Memphis Redbirds (off-day)

The Memphis Redbirds were off Monday, as they traveled to Vystar Ballpark in Jacksonville, Florida, to begin a six-game series with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Tuesday.

Memphis is 23-20 after taking just two of six from the Nashville Sounds at home and reside in fourth place, seven games back, in the International League West Division.

Tuesday’s game: at Jacksonville (MIA), RHP Ian Bedell (0-3, 8.51) vs. TBA. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM CT.

Springfield Cardinals (off-day)

The Double-A Springfield Cardinals were off Monday, as they traveled to ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to begin a six-game set with the Tulsa Drillers on Tuesday.

Springfield is 19-20 on the season following the series split with the Amarillo Sod Poodles at Hammons Field and reside in fourth place, three games back, in the Texas League North Division.

Tuesday’s game: at Tulsa (LAD), LHP Pete Hansen (1-1, 3.03) vs. RHP Jared Karros (1-2, 7.67) 7:00 PM CT.

Peoria Chiefs (off-day)

The High-A Peoria Chiefs were off Monday, as they returned to Dozer Park to begin a six-game home series with the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday.

Peoria is 15-23 on the season after taking four of six from the Kernels in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In the Midwest League East, the Chiefs are in fifth place, nine games out of first.

Tuesday’s game: vs. Dayton (CIN), RHP Jose Davila (2-2, 7.50) vs. Jose Montero (2-1, 2.54) 11:05 AM CT.

Palm Beach Cardinals (off-day)

The Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals were off Monday, as they returned to Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium to begin a six-game set with the Daytona Tortugas on Tuesday.

Palm Beach is 19-20 on the season after taking just one of six from the Tarpons in Tampa. The Cardinals are in second place, two games behind St. Lucie (NYM).

Tuesday’s game: vs. Daytona (CIN), TBA vs. Cole Schoenwetter (0-3, 6.75) 5:30 PM CT.

FCL Cardinals 9, FCL Nationals 4

The Florida Complex League Cardinals bested the Nationals at Roger Dean Stadium Complex on Monday.

Quinn Mathews started for the Cardinals in his first rehab outing as he works to rejoin the Memphis Redbirds. The left-hander pitched two scoreless innings on one hit, no walks and four strikeouts.

Regular starter Yadiel Batista fanned six and yielded one run across four innings following Mathews. Bernard Mack surrendered three runs over the seventh and eighth. Jovi Galvez tossed a scoreless ninth. Batista picked up his second win of the season.

The Cardinals scored the first run of the game in the second inning. Bracewell Taveras lined a leadoff double. Yoerny Junco reached base on a fielding error, with Taveras home on the play.

The Nationals tied the game at one apiece in the fourth.

The Cardinals regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. Taveras was hit by a pitch and advanced to second base via a wild pitch. Hancel Almonte singled him home.

The Cardinals broke the game open with a seven-run seventh inning. Yairo Padilla hit a lead-off single, and moved to second base on a disengagement violation. Raniel Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and both advanced a base on a wild pitch. Facundo Velasquez loaded the bags with a walk. Yancel Guerrero took a free pass to force Padilla home. Almonte drew the second consecutive bases-loaded walk to bring Rodriguez across the plate. Junco doubled home Velasquez and Guerrero to extend the lead to 6-1. Almonte scored on a wild pitch. Chris Lopez singled in Junco for an 8-1 lead. Lopez took second base on a wild pitch and scored on a Padilla single.

The Cardinals never trailed in the victory. They scored nine runs on 10 hits. Almonte was 2-for-3 plus two walks, a run scored, and two RBI. Junco doubled and drove in two runs. Guerrero and Velasquez each drew two walks. Taveras doubled. Red-hot Rainiel Rodriguez singled, doubled and walked in four plate appearances, but did not go deep for the first time in five games.

Defensively, the Cardinals did not commit an error. They did not steal a base.

The FCL Cardinals are 5-6 on the season. They are in fourth place but only 1 ½ games out of a share of first. They will look to sweep the two-game homestand with a win over the FCL Mets on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s game: vs. FCL Mets. Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM CT.

On Monday, FCL Cardinals catcher Rainiel Rodriguez was named the league’s Player of the Week for the period of May 12-18. The 18-year-old the league in most offensive categories while recording a hit, run, and RBI in all five games played and homered in his last four consecutive games of the week.
