The St. Louis Cardinals minor league teams did not play on Monday, with the only scheduled game postponed. TCN’s Michael Goff looks at the five active teams and their upcoming series, which start on Tuesday, May 13.
Memphis Redbirds (off-day)
The Triple-A Memphis Redbirds were off Monday and will begin a six-game series at AutoZone Park with the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday.
Jimmy Crooks has slugged five home runs driven in 27, leading the team in both categories. César Prieto and Ryan Vilade are tied for the team lead in hits at 35.
On the mound, starter Michael McGreevy pitched the most innings at 33 2/3 and has a 3.74 ERA. Andre Granillo has been effective from the bullpen, with a 1.62 ERA across 10 appearances and 16 2/3 innings pitched.
Memphis enters Tuesday with a 21-16 record after taking just two out of six at Charlotte and resides in third place in the International League West Division.
Tuesday’s game: vs. Nashville (MIL). Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 PM CT.
Springfield Cardinals (off-day)
The Double-A Springfield Cardinals were off Monday, as they headed home to Hammons Field to begin a six-game set with the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Tuesday.
Jeremy Rivas has launched four home runs and tallied 19 RBI to lead the team in both categories. Dakota Harris leads the team with 29 hits.
Ixan Henderson has showcased ace-caliber pitching through his first five starts with Springfield. The left-hander sports a 2.13 ERA over 25 1/3 innings. Henderson also leads the team with 32 strikeouts, with fellow lefty starter Brycen Mautz close behind with 30. Right-hander Sean Harney has racked up a team-leading four saves out of the bullpen.
Springfield is 15-18 after the series split with the Arkansas Travelers, and is in fourth place in the Texas League North Division.
Tuesday’s game: vs. Amarillo (ARI), LHP Ixan Henderson (2-1, 2.13) vs. TBA. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM CT.
Peoria Chiefs (off-day)
The High-A Peoria Chiefs were off Monday, as they head to Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to begin a six-game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Tuesday.
Michael Curialle leads the Chiefs with three home runs on the season. Joshua Baez has a team-best 26 hits, though Jon Jon Gazdar is close with 25. Curialle and Baez are tied for the team lead in RBI with 15.
Hancel Rincon enters the series with a 3.04 ERA, the lowest on the Chiefs. Rincon and Gerardo Salas are tied for the team lead in innings pitched at 26 2/3. Jose Davila has tossed 26 frames, third-most for Peoria.
Peoria is 11-21 on the season, after the series split with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, and resides in fifth place in the Midwest League West Division.
Tuesday’s game: at Cedar Rapids (MIN), TBA vs. RHP Alejandro Hidalgo (0-0, 6.38) 6:35 PM CT.
Palm Beach Cardinals (off-day)
The Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals were off Monday, as they traveled to Yankee Stadium Complex 2 in Tampa, Florida, to begin a six-game series with the Tampa Tarpons on Tuesday.
Josh Kross has been the most productive hitter for Palm Beach through the first month-plus of the season. The 22-year-old has slugged eight home runs and amassed 34 RBI to lead the Florida State League, and he has more than doubled any other Cardinal in both categories. Christian Martin leads Palm Beach in hits at 32 though Kross is right behind with 31.
Cardinals starting pitching has been excellent thus far. Jason Savacool has won a team-leading three of his six starts and he carries a pristine 1.09 ERA through 33 innings, leading the club in both of those categories.
Brandt Thompson is off to an impressive start to his professional career. In 27 innings, the 22-year-old boasts a 1.67 ERA, second on the club. Leonel Sequera has started a team-leading seven games, with a 2.01 ERA across 31 1/3 innings, second most innings pitched.
Palm Beach is 18-15 on the season and in first place by one game after taking four of six from the Jupiter Hammerheads.
Tuesday’s game: vs. Tampa (NYY). Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 PM CT.
Florida Complex League Cardinals vs. Florida Complex League Astros (postponed)
The 1-4 FCL Cardinals’ matchup with the FCL Astros was rained out on Monday. The game will be made up on Tuesday as part of a doubleheader.
The Cardinals will be the road team for the first game, and the home team for the second game, as originally planned on Monday. Both games will be played at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches Complex in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Tuesday’s games: Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 9:00 AM CT.
