Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 12, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 3-1 including two shutouts on Thursday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Moisés Gómez, had three hits including a grand slam and stole a base in Memphis’ win. Other standouts include Iván Herrera, Pedro Pagés, Edgar Manzo, Pete Hansen and Joshua Baez.

Memphis 8 at Lehigh Valley 6

The Memphis Redbirds (22-14) topped the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (PHI, 18-17) at Coca-Cola Park on Thursday night.

In his second start, Zack Thompson pitched three innings and was touched for two runs on a hit and four walks. The left-hander struck out five. Andrew Suárez surrendered four runs in 2 2/3 innings on five hits and two walks.

The Redbirds struck in the first inning as Iván Herrera doubled to score Masyn Winn. In the sixth, Winn singled to tie the game at 2-2. Herrera walked with the bases loaded and Moisés Gómez hit a grand slam to make the score 7-2. The IronPigs responded with four runs in the home half.

Kodi Whitley tossed a scoreless inning and yielded two hits and a walk. The 28-year-old fanned three and earned his first win of 2023. Ryan Loutos struck out two in a scoreless inning. Jake Walsh saved his first of the year after a scoreless 1 1/3 innings.

Jordan Walker brought in an insurance run in the ninth via sacrifice fly.

Gómez went 3-for-4 with a grand slam. Juniel Querecuto recorded two hits, a walk and a run scored. Herrera doubled, walked four times, drove in two and came across once. The lineup went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Herrera and Gómez both stole a bag.

Friday’s game: at Lehigh Valley, LHP Matthew Liberatore (3-1, 2.77) vs. RHP Nick Nelson (0-0, 0.00) 6:05 CT

Springfield 3 at Tulsa 5

The Springfield Cardinals (13-17) fell to the Tulsa Drillers (LAD, 20-10) on Thursday at ONEOK Field.

Connor Lunn took his third loss of the season after he was touched for three runs, one earned, on five hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out seven.

Jacob Buchberger blasted his sixth homer of the year in the sixth inning to make the score 2-1. The Drillers responded with three runs over the sixth and seventh innings.

Nick Trogrlic-Iverson yielded two runs, one earned, on two hits, a walk and two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. Andre Granillo recorded a scoreless eighth.

Texas League leader Chandler Redmond hit his 11th home run of the year in the eighth, a solo shot. In the ninth, Matt Koperniak singled to drive in Arquímedes Gamboa. With the tying run at the plate in the ninth and two out, Redmond grounded out and the game concluded.

Every Cardinals starter was on base at least once, but they went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base. Pedro Pagés recorded a hit and two walks.

Friday’s game: at Tulsa, RHP Logan Gragg (0-0, 6.43) vs. RHP Landon Knack (0-0, 1.50) 7:05 CT

Peoria 6, Dayton 0

The Peoria Chiefs (17-13) shut out the Dayton Dragons (CIN, 13-17) at Dozer Park on Thursday.

In a bullpen game necessitated by Zane Mills’ move to the injured list, Edgar Manzo stepped in nicely, tossing four scoreless innings. The right-hander yielded three hits and struck out four.

The Chiefs scored four runs in the first three innings. Aaron McKeithan brought in Nathan Church (HBP) via sacrifice fly in the first. In the second, Thomas Francisco hit a solo home run, his first of 2023. Jeremy Rivas doubled in the third to plate two runs.

Alfredo Ruiz pitched three scoreless innings and struck out four. The 2021 sixth-round pick earned his first win of the year. Bryan Pope fanned four in two scoreless innings.

In the eighth, Peoria added two more runs. Ramon Mendoza scored Rivas via single. Mendoza came across after Osvaldo Tovalin singled to make the score 6-0.

Church, Rivas and Victor Scott II all recorded two hits. Jimmy Crooks doubled and Rivas had a double and two RBI. The pitching struck out 12 and surrendered only five hits and two walks.

Scott took his 23rd bag of the year and still leads all of professional baseball in the category. Rivas was caught stealing and picked off.

Friday’s game: vs. Dayton, RHP Tink Hence (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Thomas Farr (0-2, 3.60) 6:35 CT

Palm Beach 7 at Jupiter 0

The Palm Beach Cardinals (18-12) blanked the Jupiter Hammerheads (MIA, 17-13) on Thursday night as the away team at Roger Dean Stadium.

Starter Pete Hansen tossed seven scoreless innings and was charged with only two hits and two walks. TCN’s no. 16 prospect fanned nine and earned his second win of 2023.

In the fourth, Michael Curialle singled to score R.J. Yeager and give the Beach Birds the lead. Tre Fletcher singled Curialle home in the seventh.

The Cardinals scored five insurance runs in the ninth. Won-Bin Cho brought in a run via single. With the bases loaded, Joshua Baez tripled to plate three runs. Brody Moore scored Baez to make the score 7-0.

Roy Garcia pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three. The 22-year-old lowered his 2023 ERA to 2.51.

Every player in the Palm Beach lineup recorded one hit except catcher Carlos Linarez. Yeager and Brandon Hernandez doubled. Curialle walked twice and Baez recorded three RBI. The lineup went an efficient 6-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Curialle and Fletcher each took their fourth bags of the season.
