Cardinals Minor League Notebook – March 29, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-0 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is Memphis 2B José Fermín, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the Opening Day home win over Charlotte. Other standouts include Michael McGreevy, Luken Baker and César Prieto.

Memphis 6, Charlotte 5

The Memphis Redbirds edged the Charlotte Knights by a 6-5 score on Opening Day at AutoZone Park. Starter Michael McGreevy pitched five innings, gave up two runs on eight hits and struck out two.

Connor Thomas threw two innings of relief and surrendered two runs on three hits. Thanks to a Memphis offensive comeback during his time on the mound, Thomas still received the win. Nick Robertson followed with a scoreless eighth. Wilking Rodriguez started the ninth and yielded one run in 2/3 of an inning. John King secured the final out of the game and earned his first save.

Charlotte took the early lead with two runs in the second. Memphis made it 2-1 in the fifth. César Prieto led off with a single. José Fermín doubled. Thomas Saggese drove in Prieto on a ground out.

The Knights, behind starting pitcher Jake Woodford, a former Redbird, widened their lead to 4-1 in the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, the Redbirds put up five runs to take a 6-4 lead.  Reigning International League MVP Luken Baker picked up where he left off with a leadoff home run. Moisés Gomez also went deep to cut the lead to 4-3. After Pedro Pagés drew a walk and Prieto singled, Fermín doubled to plate both runners. Fermín came home on Mike Antico’s double. The Redbirds led 6-4.

Charlotte scored one run in the ninth for the final score of 6-5. With two on and two outs and the score 6-4, King yielded an RBI single to his first batter faced before ending the game on a strikeout.

Baker was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Prieto was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Fermín was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Antico was 2-for-5.

On the base paths, Antico stole two bases. In the field, Gomez made a fielding error.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Charlotte, RHP Adam Kloffenstein vs. RHP Chad Kuhl, 1:05 CT.
