The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-0 on Monday on opening day for the rookie teams. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Hancel Almonte, went 2-for-4 with a single and a two-run homer for the DSL club. Other standouts include Jose Suarez and Adari Grant.

Memphis Redbirds – Off
The Memphis Redbirds (31-26) are in third place and two games back of first in the International League West.

Springfield Cardinals – Off
The Springfield Cardinals (23-28) are 12 games behind Tulsa and sit in third place in the Texas League North.

Peoria Chiefs – Off
The Peoria Chiefs (23-28) dropped to fifth place in the Midwest League West, six games out of first.

Palm Beach Cardinals – Off
The Palm Beach Cardinals (30-21) are in first place by one game over Jupiter in the Florida State League East.

FCL Cardinals 6 at FCL Nationals 4
The Florida Complex League Cardinals (1-0) topped the Nationals (0-1) in their season opener on Monday at the Nationals ST Complex.
Starter Benjamin Arias tossed three innings and surrendered three runs on three hits and three walks. The right-hander fanned three. In relief, Henry Gomez pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts to earn the win.
The Cardinals and Nationals traded runs in the first two innings. Jose Suarez brought in a run via sacrifice fly in the first but the Nationals responded with one in the bottom half. In the second, Suarez singled to score two. Once again, the Nationals tied the game in the bottom half.
John Lynch threw one inning and yielded an unearned run on one hit, a walk and one strikeout. Victor Villanueva recorded a scoreless seventh inning. Luis Gastelum collected the save after two scoreless innings on two hits, a walk and three punchouts.
In the sixth, the Cardinals scored two runs to take the lead. Adari Grant doubled and Yaisel Ramos came across on an error. Anyelo Encarnacion brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. Romtres Cabrera added one more in the seventh with a single.
Grant, TCN’s no. 24 prospect, went 2-for-3 with a double, one walk and two runs scored. Cabrera also had two hits and Suarez scored three runs. The lineup went 3-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
On the base paths, Felix Taveras was caught stealing. Yancel Guerrero and Villanueva both had fielding errors.
Wednesday’s game: vs. FCL Mets, TBA vs. TBA 11:00 CT (The Cardinals are off Tuesday)
The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (1-0) edged the Angels (0-1) in their opener on Monday afternoon.
Starter Nelfy Ynfante earned the win after he gave up three runs, two earned, in five innings. The 18-year-old struck out seven. Jovi Galvez pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
After the Angels scored two runs in the second inning, the Cardinals answered with two in the home half. Hancel Almonte blasted a two-run homer to tie the game. In the third, Fernando Roquez came across on an error and Heriberto Caraballo singled to plate one. Arfeni Batista added one more in the fourth via sacrifice fly.
Yordy Herrera surrendered a run in two innings of relief. The left-hander yielded two hits, a walk and three strikeouts. Justin Hernandez pitched a hitless ninth and earned the save with two strikeouts.
Five different players in the lineup recorded two hits. Roquez, Yoerny Junco and Bracewell Taveras all doubled and Caraballo tripled. Almonte homered and singled. The Cardinals went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Junco, Batista and Taveras all committed errors.
