Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 30, 2025

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league system was shut out in four Sunday games. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield shortstop Jeremy Rivas, doubled, homered, walked twice and stole two bases. Other standouts include Quinn Mathews, Hancel Rincon and Brandt Thompson.

Memphis Redbirds 2 at Durham Bulls 4

The Memphis Redbirds dropped the series finale to the Bulls in Durham on Sunday, snapping the Triple-A team’s five-series unbeaten streak.

Quinn Mathews started for Memphis. The left-hander pitched 4 ⅔ scoreless innings on four hits, three walks, and four strikeouts. Only 47 of his 81 pitches went for strikes.

Fellow lefty Oddanier Mosqueda surrendered three runs across two innings in relief and took the loss. Chris Roycroft yielded one run over 1 ⅓ innings.

The Redbirds broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Bryan Torres walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Torres stole third base and scored via a throwing error.

The Redbirds doubled the lead in the sixth. Matt Koperniak singled and swiped second base. Torres hit his seventh double of the season to plate Koperniak for a 2-0 Redbirds lead.

The Bulls responded with three runs in the home sixth to take a one-run lead and added an insurance run in the eighth. Memphis failed to respond.

The Redbirds scored two runs on four hits. Torres walked and hit an RBI single. Luken Baker was 2-for-4 with a double. Koperniak singled and scored a run.

On the bases, Torres stole two bags to increase his season total to 15. Koperniak swiped his fifth. The Redbirds did not commit an error on defense.

Memphis is 43-36 overall, and 2-4 in the second half following a 4-2 series loss to Durham. They reside in a five-way tie for third place in the International League West Division, two games back of first.

The Redbirds will travel to First Horizon Park in Nashville, Tennessee, to begin a six-game set with the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday. The first three games will be played on the road, with the final three games played at home in AutoZone Park.

Tuesday’s game: at Nashville (MIL). Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM CT.

Springfield Cardinals 4 at Wichita Wind Surge 7

The Double-A Springfield Cardinals fell to the Wichita Wind Surge on the road in Sunday’s series finale.

Hancel Rincon started for the Cardinals. The right-hander threw five innings and allowed two runs on five hits, two walks and eight strikeouts.

Sean Harney tossed a scoreless sixth inning in relief. Austin Love followed with a clean seventh. Luis Gastelum surrendered five runs in the eighth inning and took the loss.

Springfield pounced early with a two-run top of the first inning. Noah Mendlinger lined a lead-off single. Leonardo Bernal’s sacrifice bunt forced a throwing error. Bernal moved to third base and Mendlinger scored the first run of the game on the play. Bernal touched home plate on Chase Davis’ sacrifice fly.

The Wind Surge split the lead in half in the home first.

The Cardinals took the run back in the third inning. Darlin Moquete and Mendlinger singled to put runners on the corners. Bernal singled to bring Moquete home and extend the Cardinals’ lead to 3-1.

Wichita plated a run in the third to move within a run once more.

Springfield regained the two-run lead in the eighth. Jeremy Rivas slugged his seventh home run of the season.

Wichita erupted for a five-run bottom of the eighth against the normally dependable Gastelum to seize a 7-4 lead. Springfield stranded two runners on base in the ninth, as the rally fell short.

The Cardinals scored four runs on eight hits. Rivas was 2-for-2, including a double and a home run plus two walks. Bernal singled, scored a run, and drove in a run. Mendlinger tallied two singles.

On the basepaths, Rivas swiped two bags for a total of 12 on the season. Wetherholt stole his 13th.

On defense, catcher Bernal made a throwing error.

Springfield is 45-30 overall, and 2-4 in the second half after winning just two of six from Wichita. They reside in last place in the Texas League North Division, but are just two games back of first.

The Cardinals will head home to Hammons Field to begin a six-game set with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Tuesday. The first three games will be played at home, and the latter three games will be on the road at Arvest Ballpark.

Tuesday’s game: vs. Northwest Arkansas (KC). LHP Brycen Mautz (1-2, 4.35) vs. TBA. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CT.

Peoria Chiefs 0, Beloit Sky Carp 10

The High-A Peoria Chiefs were blown out by the Beloit Sky Carp at Dozer Park in Sunday’s series finale to split the set at three games apiece.

Gerardo Salas made his 15th start of the season for Peoria. The right-hander tossed four innings and allowed three runs on six hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. Salas took the loss.

Benjamin Arias gave up five runs in one inning in relief. Darlin Saladin yielded two runs across four innings.

Beloit carried a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Chiefs tried to mount a late-inning comeback. Zach Levenson doubled and Ryan Campos walked to put two runners on base. A double-play ball halted Peoria’s threat.

Peoria looked to rally once more, facing a 10-0 deficit in the bottom of the ninth. Ian Petrutz singled and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Levenson walked. The runners advanced into scoring position via a second wild pitch, but both were left on base.

The Chiefs did not score on just three hits. Levenson walked and tallied the lone Chiefs extra-base hit, a double. Petrutz and Campos singled. The lineup drew just three walks and struck out nine times. The Chiefs did not record a stolen base.

On defense, center fielder Won-Bin Cho and shortstop Jon Jon Gazdar each committed a fielding error. Pitcher Salas picked a runner off second base.

Peoria is 30-44 overall, 4-5 in the second half, and two games back of first-place Quad Cities in the Midwest League West Division. They will begin a six-game set with the South Bend Cubs on Tuesday. The first three games will be played at Dozer Park, with the latter three games being played on the road at Four Winds Field.

Tuesday’s game: vs. South Bend (CHC). Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM CT.

Palm Beach Cardinals 3 at Daytona Tortugas 10

The Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals fell to the Daytona Tortugas on the road in Sunday’s series finale.

Brandt Thompson started his 13th game in his 14th appearance overall for Palm Beach. The right-hander pitched six innings, tying his career-high, and allowed two runs on three hits, no walks, and four strikeouts. Thompson took the quality start loss.

Charles Harrison relieved Thompson and surrendered six runs in the seventh inning. Yordy Herrera yielded two runs and recorded just two outs. Ernie Day secured the final out of the bottom of the eighth inning.

Daytona scored single runs in the third, sixth, and seventh innings to take a 3-0 lead.

Palm Beach broke the shutout in the top of the eighth. Johnfrank Salazar and Sammy Hernandez hit back-to-back singles. Bryce Madron moved the runners up on a sacrifice bunt. Cade McGee brought Salazar home on a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 score.

Daytona pulled away with a seven-run home eighth.

Still, Palm Beach looked to rally in the ninth. Jose Suarez walked, and moved to second base on Yordalin Pena’s single. The runners moved up via a wild pitch. Anyelo Encarnacion loaded the bases with a walk. Salazar drew a bases loaded walk to bring Suarez to the plate for the Cardinals’ second run of the game. Pena crossed home plate on a Hernandez sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 10-3. However, the scoring ended there.

The Cardinals scored three runs on just four hits. Salazar walked twice, singled, scored a run, and drove in a run. Hernandez singled and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. McGee recorded a sacrifice fly. Rainiel Rodriguez had the only Palm Beach extra-base hit, a double.

On the bases, Bryce Madron swiped his second bag.  The Cardinals did not commit an error.

Palm Beach is 34-40 overall, and 2-7 in the second half after winning two of six from Daytona. They reside in last place in the Florida State League East Division.

The Cardinals will head home to Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium to begin a six-game series with the Jupiter Hammerheads. The Cardinals will serve as the home team for the first three games, and the road team for the latter three contests.

Tuesday’s game: vs. Jupiter. Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 PM CT.

FCL Cardinals (off-day)

The Florida Complex League Cardinals were off Sunday, as they prepared for a road contest at the FCL Astros on Monday.

The Cardinals enter Monday coming off a doubleheader split with the FCL Mets on Saturday.

The FCL Cardinals are 17-20 on the season and reside in third place, six games back in the East Division.

Monday’s game: at FCL Astros. Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM CT.

DSL Cardinals (off-day)

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals were off Sunday, as they prepared for a home contest with DSL Colorado on Monday.

The Cardinals enter Monday following a walk-off loss to the DSL NYY Bombers on Saturday.

The DSL Cardinals are 12-8 on the season and hold a one-game lead in the Southeast Division.

Tuesday’s game: vs. DSL Colorado. Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 AM CT.
