Springfield 7 at Tulsa 8

The Cardinals were edged by the Drillers in a Saturday night contest in Tulsa that got away late.  Springfield led before a one-hour stoppage in the seventh, but after action resumed, the lead evaporated.

Tulsa took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Cardinals starter Domingo Robles. Springfield responded in the second inning to tie the score on a two-run double by Justin Toerner.  The Cardinals took the lead in the third on a two-run home run by Nolan Gorman.  In the fourth, a solo home run by Brendan Donovan gave the Cardinals a 5-2 edge.

The Drillers got one back in the fifth, but in the sixth Springfield regained the three-run lead on a solo home run by Luken Baker.

After the delay, Springfield increased its lead to 7-3 on an RBI single by Ivan Herrera.  The Drillers then started their five-run half of the eighth with a solo home run. That was not the end of it as a three-run home run followed and Tulsa went up 8-7 on a sac fly. The Cardinals were unable to rally in the ninth.

Nolan Gorman

Gorman and Perez were both 2-for-5.  Gorman had two RBI.  Baker was 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored.  Toerner drove in two.

Robles tossed five innings and allowed three runs on five hits, fanned five and walked two.  Kyle Leahy pitched a scoreless sixth.  Michael Brettell took the mound after the delay and yielded five runs, three earned.  A fielding error by Delvin Perez led to the three-run home run that tied the game.  Ramon Santos finished with 2/3 scoreless innings.  Brettell was charged with a blown save and the loss.

In addition to the costly Perez error, Herrera had a passed ball.  Toerner had an outfield assist at third base.

The Cardinals are 16-30 and in last place in the Double-A Central North Division, 10 games back of first place Tulsa, whose win in this game put them in a tie for first place with Wichita.
