The St. Louis Cardinals system was 3-2 on Friday. Our Player of the Day is Peoria right fielder Jhon Torres, who was 2-for-4 including a three-run home run and two runs scored in the Chiefs’ twin bill Game 2 win.

Memphis 3 at Toledo 5 (seven innings)
The Redbirds (17-29) fell to the Mud Hens in a disrupted Friday night at Fifth Third Field. The game was delayed twice for rain in the area and was finally called in the mid-seventh inning.
Falling behind 5-0, Memphis was kept off the board until the sixth inning. Conner Capel doubled to center, then Juan Yepez and Tyler Heinemann walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored two. Rayder Ascanio singled to plate Heinemann.
Memphis failed to score in the top of the seventh and with one out in the bottom of the frame the rain came for the second time. The game was called with the Mud Hens on top.
Redbirds starter Zack Thompson is still looking for his first Triple-A win and suffered his sixth loss of the season. The left hander pitched four innings and gave up five runs on eight hits, struck out five and walked three. Tyler Webb tossed two scoreless innings of relief, fanning three. Brandon Dickson pitched the final 1/3 inning.
Memphis’ offense scored three runs on five hits. Yepez, Capel, and Irving Lopez doubled. Capel had an outfield assist at third base.
The Redbirds sit in last place in the Triple-A East Southeast Division, 13.5 games back of the first place Durham Bulls.
Saturday’s game: at Toledo, TBD vs. TBD 6:05 CT.
The Cardinals (16-29) were victorious over the Tulsa Drillers in a 5-3 contest on Friday night at ONEOK Field. The game was close as the Drillers tied the score twice before Springfield’s offense broke out in the sixth inning.
Springfield scored first in the second inning on a solo home run by Justin Toerner. Toledo knotted it up in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cardinals regained the lead in the top of the fifth on a Nick Dunn solo home run.

The Mud Hens answered in the bottom of the fifth by tying the game once again. In the top of the sixth the Cardinals added three runs to widen the gap. Brendan Donovan singled, and Alec Burleson and Nick Plummer walked to load the bases. Toerner doubled to plate two. Plummer scored on a sac fly by Dunn.
Toledo made it closer with a run in the seventh, but Springfield pitching kept the Mud Hens at bay over the final two innings for the 5-3 Springfield win.
Starter Dalton Roach won his third game of the season after pitching five innings and giving up two runs on eight hits. The right hander punched out seven and issued one free pass. Salvador Justo surrendered a run in his 1 2/3 innings pitched. Alvaro Seijas and Jacob Bosiokovic combined for the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Bosiokovic earned his second save.
Donovan, Burleson, and Toerner had two hits each. Toerner had three RBI and Dunn drove in two. Burleson stole his second base of the season. Delvin Perez was caught stealing for the fourth time in 2021.
The Cardinals are in last place in the Double-A Central North Division, 9.5 games back of the first place Wichita Wind Surge.
Saturday’s game: at Tulsa, Domingo Robles LHP (2-2, 4.62) vs. Andre Jackson RHP (2-2, 3.00) 7:05 CT
Peoria 3 at Wisconsin 9 (completion of suspended game)
The Chiefs (18-27) were defeated by the Timber Rattlers in the completion of the suspended game from Thursday. Peoria starter Logan Gragg had pitched only one inning on Thursday when the contest was stopped due to rain. Gragg gave up one run on one hit and walked one.
When the game resumed on Friday, Wilfredo Pereira took the mound. The right hander tossed four innings and yielded three runs on three hits, struck out two and walked three. Pereira absorbed the loss, his fourth of the season.

The Chiefs took the lead in the third inning on a two-run home run by Moises Castillo that put Peoria up 2-1. Wisconsin tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. The Timber Rattlers continued to score with a total of eight runs off the relief combination of Pereira, Fabian Blanco, and finally Nathanael Heredia who surrendered the final run in the seventh.
Peoria added one more run to their tally in the ninth on an RBI single by Tyler Reichenborn, but there the rally ended. Leandro Cedeno was the only Chief with multiple hits with a single and a double. Cedeno also committed a fielding error. Francisco Hernandez was caught stealing for the second time this season.
Peoria 7 at Wisconsin 4 (seven innings, Game 2)
The Chiefs were the winners in the regularly scheduled contest with the Timber Rattlers on Friday, a seven inning second game of a twin bill. The contest was close until the Chiefs put up a crooked number in the final inning to secure the victory.
Peoria scored first in the top of the third inning, on bases loaded walks by Tyler Reichenborn and Zade Richardson. Wisconsin responded with three runs, taking the lead in the home half of the third.
The Chiefs tied the game in the fourth on a third bases loaded walk, this one from Chandler Redmond. The game remained knotted up 3-3 until the seventh inning. Redmond singled and Francisco Hernandez drew a walk. Matt Chamberlain singled to plate Redmond. Jhon Torres then blasted a three-run home to left center field to break open the game and give the Chiefs the 7-3 lead. The Timber Rattlers added a run in the bottom of the final frame, but the rally attempt fell short.

Peoria starter Michael YaSenka tossed five innings and yielded three runs on five hits, fanned nine and walked two. Cory Thompson pitched the final two innings and surrendered one run. Thompson’s win is his second of the season.
Torres was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Moises Castillo was 3-for-3 and Chamberlain was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Richardson made two errors, a dropped foul and a throwing error.
The Chiefs currently stand in last place in the High-A Central West Division, 11 games back of first place Quad Cities.
Saturday’s game: at Wisconsin, Nick Trogrlic-Iverson RHP (2-2, 4.12) vs. Zach Mort RHP (1-3, 5.59) 6:35 CT.
The Cardinals (16-30) prevailed over the Mighty Mussels on Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Beach Birds took an early lead and were backed by good pitching from starter Jose Moreno.
Todd Lott singled to begin the second and scored on a single by Tommy Jew. Moreno kept Fort Myers off the board through five innings. He walked the lead off hitter in the sixth and that runner came around to tie the score.
Palm Beach answered in the sixth with three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Lott and Matt Koperniak singled. Both scored on a triple by Jew. Franklin Soto plated Jew on a single to left.
Will Guay and Sean Kealey kept the Mighty Mussels off the board for the final innings. The Cardinals added a fifth run in the seventh on a sac fly by Jacob Buchberger.
Moreno pitched five-plus innings and yielded one run on three hits, fanned six and walked one. Guay tossed three scoreless innings to earn the win, however, he was also charged with a blown save in allowing Moreno’s inherited runner to score in the sixth. Kealey pitched a scoreless ninth.
Lott, Jew, and Soto each had two hits. Jew drove in three. Soto committed his 14th error of the season, a fielding miscue. Lott made a throwing error.
In his first rehab game, St. Louis center fielder Harrison Bader led off for Palm Beach and singled once in three plate appearances.
Palm Beach in in last place in the Low-A Southeast Division, 8.5 games back of first place St. Lucie.
Saturday’s game: vs. Fort Myers, Levi Prater LHP (1-2, 3.35) vs. Sawyer Gipson-Long RHP (3-2, 6.37) 5:30 CT.
