Memphis’ big win was the only one across the St. Louis Cardinals system as the bats were quiet during the 1-7 Friday. Our Player of the Day is red-hot Memphis left fielder Conner Capel, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI.
Results for games played Friday, June 21.

A late inning offensive surge powered the Redbirds to a road victory over the Oklahoma City Dodgers on Friday.
The Redbirds got on the board in the top of the first on a solo home run by Edmundo Sosa. The Dodgers answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and one run in the third to take a 3-1 lead into fourth.
Conner Capel tied the game in the fourth with a two run single, then took the lead in the fifth on double play ground out by Andrew Knizner. The Dodgers regained the lead in the bottom frame with two scores.
Capel again tied the game on a double in the sixth, and Joe Hudson followed with a two run home run for the 7-5 lead. A John Nogowski RBI double in the seventh increased the lead to 8-5. The Dodgers made it 8-6 in the bottom half of the seventh.
The big Memphis inning was the eighth. Capel thumped a solo home run. Yariel Gonzalez followed with a two run blast and Adolis Garcia did the same with a second two run long ball. The score was then 13-6. A double play by Randy Arozarena in the ninth plated the 14th run for the Redbirds. The Dodgers answered with only one run in the bottom half of the game.
Nogowski and Capel each had three hits. Capel drove in four runs. Arozarena, Sosa, Knizner, Garcia and Irving Lopez each had two hits.
Starter Harold Arauz pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking one. Tommy Layne got the final out of the fifth. Chris Ellis allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings pitched. Chasen Shreve got the final two outs in the seventh. Hunter Cervenka tossed the final two innings and surrendered one run. Layne was the winning pitcher.
Memphis is 30-44 on the season and is in third place in the PCL American North, 11 games behind the Iowa Cubs.

Springfield 0 at Corpus Christi 3

The Cardinals were blanked by the Corpus Christi Hooks on Friday. Starter Austin Warner pitched six innings and gave up three runs on six hits. All three runs came in the third inning on two long balls. Warner struck out seven and walked one. Roel Ramirez pitched a flawless seventh with two strikeouts, and Junior Fernandez allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth. Warner suffered his sixth loss.
The Springfield offense managed just three hits, all singles, by Dylan Carlson, Justin Toerner, and Brian O’Keefe. The Cardinals were 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.
Toerner stole his first base for Springfield. Chase Pinder threw a runner out at home.
The Cardinals are 0-4 in the second half, 30-44 overall, and in last place in the Texas League North.

The Cardinals were the losers to the Dunedin Blue Jays in their fourth game of the second half, played on Friday.
Palm Beach scored first with one run in the fourth on an RBI single by Julio Rodriguez. The Cardinals added two in the sixth for the 3-0 lead when Scott Hurst doubled and later scored on a lineout by Rodriguez. Luken Baker drew a walk and scored when Nolan Gorman reached on a fielding error.
Dunedin cut the deficit to 3-2 with scores in the sixth and seventh, then plunged ahead with a four run eighth. The Cardinals were unable to score further in answer.
With two hits, Hurst was the only Cardinal with multiples. Rodriguez had two RBI.
In his Palm Beach debut, 21-year old starter Diego Cordero pitched five innings and gave up one run on five hits. The left hander fanned four and walked one. C. J. Saylor relieved Cordero with two on and no outs in the sixth, allowed an inherited runner to score, but finished the inning. Saylor put two men on to start the seventh and was relieved by Ramon Santos, who got out of the inning with no damage. Santos returned to start the eighth, walked the first two batters and was relieved by Mitchell Osnowitz. Osnowitz fanned the first hitter, then gave up a single to tie the game and a three run home run. Two runs were charged to Santos and two to Osnowitz. Santos was tagged with the loss and a blown save and Osnowitz earned a second blown save.
Hurst stole a base, Lars Nootbaar had an outfield assist, and Cordero picked a runner off first base.
Palm Beach is 1-3 in the second half and 36-32 overall. The Cardinals stand in last place in the FSL South in the second half.

Peoria 2, Cedar Rapids 3 (11 innings)

The Chiefs battled back from a deficit to take the game to extra innings, but ultimately fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Dozer Park on Friday.
The Chiefs offense was held scoreless until the bottom of the ninth. Behind 2-0 in the last inning, Ivan Herrera hit a solo home run to left field to cut the deficit to the 2-1. Juan Yepez immediately followed with his own solo home run to left. The game was tied and went into the 10th inning.
Neither team scored in the 10th, but in 11th, the Kernels plated what would be the winning run. The Chiefs were unable to answer, and the game was over.
No Chief had multiple hits. The two long balls were the only extra base hits in the game and were two of only three Peoria hits. A Delvin Perez single was the only other knock.
Chiefs starter Michael Brettell pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits striking out three and walking two. Cole Aker followed with a scoreless eighth. Evan Sisk tossed two scoreless innings, and Edgar Escobar allowed the unearned run in the 11th and took the loss.
On the base paths, Perez was caught stealing for the fifth time in the season.
The Chiefs are 1-1 in the second half and 31-40 overall in the Midwest League West.

State College 5 at West Virginia 6

The Spikes lost a close contest to the West Virginia Black Bears on Friday. Spikes pitching gave up a 4-0 lead in the last four innings. Starter Scott Politz pitched two scoreless innings with no hits and one strike out. Jeremy Randolph followed with two scoreless. Junior Gonzalez and Eli Kraus surrendered three runs each across the final four frames. Kraus took the loss and was also tagged for a blown save.
Carlos Soto hit a solo home run in the first inning to put State College on the board. A wild pitch in the third inning led to a score and the lead was 2-0. Dariel Gomez plated a run on a double in the fourth. In the sixth, Pedro Pages doubled to bring the fourth run home.
The Black Bears roared back with six runs over the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. The Spikes were able to add one more run in the ninth, but the rally fell short. The ninth inning score came on single by Soto.
Pages had four hits and Soto had two.
The Spikes are 6-2 and are in first place in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.
Saturday’s game: at West Virginia, Emmanuel Solano (0-0, 7.20) 6:05 CT.

The Cardinals were defeated by the Danville Braves in a low scoring one run contest on Friday. Johnson City starter Julio Puello pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits. The right hander struck out six and issued no free passes. Left hander Enrique Perez surrendered one run in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Leonardo Taveras relieved Perez with one out in the ninth and finished the inning with no damage.
The offense on both sides was meager. The Cardinals scored one run on four hits, with that sole run coming on a solo home run by Mateo Gil in the third inning. Gil had two hits in the game.
DH Kevin Vargas stole his second base of the season.
Johnson City is 1-2 on the young season.

DSL Cardinals Red 5 at DSL Tigers1 6
The Cardinals Red were edged by the Tigers1 on Friday. The Cardinals got on the board first when leadoff hitter Smith Vargas was hit by a pitch, then stole second base and scored on throwing errors by the Tigers catcher and center fielder. The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 with a score in the second inning.
Neither team scored again until the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, the Cardinals put up three runs to take a 4-1 lead. The first run of the inning came home on a wild pitch. Sander Mora then plated two more runs on a single to center. The Cardinals added another run in the eighth on a solo home run by Claudio Ramirez.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers put up the crooked number with five runs to win the game.
Starter Angel Cuenca pitched six innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits. The right hander fanned five. Lefty reliever Hemerson Cordero surrendered three runs in two innings pitched. Hector De Los Santo relinquished two runs in the ninth in relief of Cordero, whose three runs allowed also came in the ninth.
Vargas stole two bases, his fourth and fifth of the season. Albert Inoa stole his fifth bag. Luis Andujar was caught stealing for the fourth time. Catcher Roblin Heredia was picked off first base and also had a passed ball.
The Cardinals Red are 7-11 and are tied for last place in the DSL San Pedro Division.

DSL Cardinals Blue 5 at DSL Orioles2 9
The Cardinals Blue fell to the Orioles2 on Friday on the road. Cardinals starter Wilmer Ortega pitched four innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on eight hits. The right hander struck out one and walked one. William Miranda followed with two scoreless innings of relief. Dionys Rodriguez took the loss and was charged with a blown save. Rodriguez hurled 1 1/3 innings and surrendered five runs on three hits. Victor Villaneuva finished the last two outs of a scoreless ninth.
The Cardinal offense got on the board in the first inning on a sac fly by Darlyn Del Villar. With a 2-1 deficit in the third, Carlos Arcia tied it up with an RBI single in the top of the third.
The Orioles scored two in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. The Cardinals responded with two runs in the fourth, on a Jose Rodriguez double and an Elvin De Jesus single.
The Cardinals added one in the seventh on a wild pitch to take the 5-4 lead. The Orioles put up the crooked number in the eighth with five runs for the 9-5 lead.
Erik Pena and De Jesus each had two hits.
Pena stole his second base of the season. Arcia made two fielding errors. Miranda picked a runner off second base.
The Cardinals Blue have a record of 11-5 and are tied for first place in the DSL South.
