Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 21, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 3-3 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, C Pedro Pages, hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the ninth for Springfield. Other standouts include Jacob Buchberger, Nick Dunn, Ian Bedell, Darlin Saladin and Yadiel Batista.

Memphis 8 at Iowa 5

The Memphis Redbirds beat the Cubs in an 8-5 contest in Des Moines on Tuesday. Starter Dakota Hudson pitched five innings, gave up two runs on seven hits, struck out eight and walked two to earn his fourth win of the season.

Kyle Leahy surrendered three runs in two innings of relief. Kodi Whitley threw a scoreless eighth and Jake Walsh tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his third save.

Iowa took an early lead, scoring single runs in the first and the second. Memphis tied the game in the fourth. Masyn Winn and Matt Koperniak walked. Juan Yepez groundde into a double play, eliminating Koperniak and moving Winn to third.  Winn scored on a single by Moises Gomez. Taylor Motter doubled to score Gomez.

In the fifth, the Redbirds scored two more runs to break the tie on a triple by Winn and a single by Koperniak. Memphis added to the lead with four runs in the top of the sixth. Gomez walked and Motter singled. Tres Barrera walked. Errol Robinson singled and Gomez scored. Newcomer Richie Palacios walked and Motter came home. Winn reached on a fielder’s choice and Barrera crossed the plate. Robinson scored on a wild pitch.

In the home half of the sixth, the Cubs scored three to bring the score to 8-5.

Motter and Koperniak both were 2-for-4 with an RBI. Robinson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Winn had two RBI.

On the base paths, Robinson stole his fourth base of the season. Yepez was caught stealing for the second time.

In the field, Motter made a fielding error. Juniel Querecuto had a missed catch error.

Memphis is 38-32 on the season and is in a three-way tie for third place in the International League West with Louisville and Nashville, eight games back of St. Paul.

Wednesday’s game:  at Iowa, RHP Tommy Parsons (0-2, 6.25) vs. Caleb Killian RHP (3-1, 5.08) 12:08 CT.

Springfield 10 at Frisco 7

The Springfield Cardinals defeated the RoughRiders in a 10-7 road slugfest on Tuesday. Starter Kenny Hernandez pitched three innings, gave up five runs on five hits, struck out six and walked three.

Nick Trogrlic-Iverson threw two scoreless innings of relief. Logan Sawyer relinquished two runs in two innings pitched. Chris Roycroft hurled a scoreless eighth and earned his second win. Andre Granillo tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save.

Frisco took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, then scored two more in the second to increase the lead to 5-0.

Springfield tied the game at 5-5 in the third. Justin Toerner singled. Nick Dunn singled. Pedro Pages doubled to score Toerner. Chandler Redmond plated Dunn and Pages on a double. Redmond scored on a single by Jacob Buchberger. Noah Mendlinger singled and Buchberger scored.

The RoughRiders broke the tie with two runs in the sixth. The Cardinals scored one run in the seventh to pull to within 7-6 on a single by Dunn.

In the ninth, two-run home runs by Pages and Buchberger propelled the Cardinals to a 10-7 win.

Buchberger was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Pages was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Redmond was 2-for-5 with two driven in and two runs scored. Dunn was 4-for-5 with an RBI.

On the base paths, Dunn stole his second base of the season. In the field, Toerner had an outfield assist at second base.

Springfield is 32-32 on the season and is in third place in the Texas League North, 8.5 games back of Arkansas and Tulsa.

Wednesday’s game:  at Frisco, Connor Lunn RHP (2-4, 5.47) vs. RHP Seth Nordlin (0-1, 5.56)  7:05 CT.

Peoria 3 at Quad Cities 2

The Peoria Chiefs held on to win a one-run game at the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday. Starter Ian Bedell pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowed three hits and struck out five.

Zane Mills relieved Bedell and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Nathanael Heredia surrendered two runs in 1 2/3 innings. In the ninth with one run in and a runner aboard, Gustavo Rodriguez struck out the final Quad Cities batter.

Peoria took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Jimmy Crooks singled, then stole second base and scored on a single by Osvaldo Tovalin.

The Chiefs added two runs in the top of the eighth. Aaron McKeithan walked. Darlin Moquete pinch ran for McKeithan. Crooks doubled and Moquete came home. Crooks scored on a single by Jeremy Rivas.

The River Bandits added single runs in the bottom of the eighth and in the ninth to pull to within 3-2.

Crooks was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and stole his second base of the season.

Peoria is 32-32 on the season and is in second place in the Midwest League West

Wednesday’s game:  at Quad Cities, RHP Trent Baker (3-5, 4.09) vs. Adrian Alcantara RHP (0-3, 5.68) 6:30 CT.

Palm Beach 3 at Daytona 10

The Palm Beach Cardinals were pounded by the Tortugas in a seven-run loss at Daytona on Tuesday. Starter Brycen Mautz pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up four runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked four. Mautz took the loss, his sixth.

Wilmer Ortega surrendered two runs in 2 /3 innings of relief. Edwin Nunez relinquished three runs in 2/3 of an inning. Chandler Arnold allowed one run in the final 1 1/3 innings.

Daytona took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then added one run in the second. The Beach Birds scored in the fourth on a solo home run by Won-Bin Cho.

Palm Beach made it 4-2 in the fifth. Alex ladisernia walked and later came home on a single by Chris Rotondo. A third and final run came home for the Cardinals in the sixth. Javier Bolivar and ladisernia walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Bolivar scored on a ground out by rehabbing Memphis infielder Jose Fermin.

The Tortugas poured it on in the final innings, with five runs in the seventh and another in the eighth.

Rotondo was 2-for-5 with an RBI. ladisernia was 2-for-3.

On the base paths, Cho was caught stealing for the fifth time.

Palm Beach is 36-28 on the season and clinched the first half title in the FSL East.

Wednesday’s game:  at Daytona, LHP Pete Hansen (5-1, 3.31) vs. TBA 5:35 CT.

FCL Cardinals 4 at FCL Marlins 5

The Florida Complex League Cardinals were topped by the Marlins in a one run loss on Tuesday. Starter Darlin Saladin pitched five scoreless innings, allowed three hits, struck out three and walked two.

The pen did not follow Saladin’s lead as all four relievers who appeared yielded runs. Samuel Fabian relieved first and surrendered one run in the sixth. Randel Clemente relinquished two runs in 2/3 of an inning. Miguel Martinez allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings. Antoni Cuello gave up the winning run in the ninth and took the loss.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The inning began with a walk by Luis Pino. Todd Lott reached on a fielder’s choice, and a throwing error sent Pino to second. Pino stole third. Samil De La Rosa singled and Pino scored. Lott came in via a single by Fernando Diaz.

The score remained 2-0 until the sixth when the Marlins cut the lead to 2-1. In the top of the seventh the Cardinals made it 3-1. Anyelo Encarnacion doubled and later scored on a double play.

In the home half of the seventh the Marlins tied it at 3-3, then added a run in the eight h to go up 4-3. The Cardinals tied it again in the top of the ninth on a sac fly by Pino.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Marlins scored to win in a walk off.

Encarnacion was 2-for-4. Pino, De La Rosa, and Diaz each had an RBI.

On the base paths, Pino stole his second base of the season. In the field, Encarnacion made a throwing error.

The Cardinals are 4-6 on the season.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. FCL Astros, RHP Juan Salas (0-0, 1.80) vs. TBA 11:00 am CT.

DSL Cardinals 1 at DSL Angels 2 (10 innings)

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals were edged by the Angels in a 2-1 road loss in 10 innings on Tuesday. Starter Yadiel Batista pitched six innings, gave up one unearned run on four hits and struck out six.

Stiveen Rojas relieved Batista and threw two scoreless innings. Yordy Herrera surrendered one unearned run in the final 1 1/3 innings. Herrera took the loss.

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when the Cardinals scored their only run. Yordalin Pena walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and came home on a single by Daniel Rojas.

The Angels tied the game in the home half of the sixth.

The game went into extra innings, and the Angels scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

The Cardinals offense scored one run on four hits. The only extra base hit was a double by Heriberto Caraballo. The offense was 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.

Rojas made a fielding error. Pena had an outfield assist at third base. Batista picked a runner off first base.

The Cardinals are 3-8 on the season.
