Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 2, 2025

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league system was 1-2 on Sunday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield catcher Leonardo Bernal, blasted two home runs and drove in four runs. Other standouts include Thomas Saggese, Luken Baker, Luis Gastelum, and Zach Levenson.

Memphis Redbirds 5 at Durham Bulls 10

The Triple-A Memphis Redbirds fell to the Bulls in Durham in Sunday’s series finale.

Curtis Taylor made his seventh start for Memphis. The right-hander pitched 4 ⅔  innings and allowed four runs on six hits, one walk, and tied his career-high with eight strikeouts. Taylor took the loss.

Zack Weiss yielded one run across 1 ⅓ innings in relief of Taylor. Leonardo Taveras surrendered four runs and recorded just two outs. Left-hander Oddanier Mosqueda fanned two over 1 ⅓ scoreless frames.

After falling behind 4-0 early, Memphis plated a run in the sixth inning to trim the deficit. Thomas Saggese singled and moved to second base on a Luken Baker walk. Andy Yerzy followed with a single to score Saggese for the Redbirds’ first run of the game.

The Bulls scored two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to extend the lead to 10-1. The Redbirds looked to rally in the ninth inning.

Brody Moore and Mike Antico drew back-to-back walks. César Prieto was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Saggese brought Moore and Antico home with a single to trim the Durham lead to 10-3.

Saggese and Prieto advanced to second base and third base, respectively, on a wild pitch. Baker lined a second consecutive single to plate Prieto and Saggese to move within five runs at 10-5.

Memphis was unable to rally further in the loss.

The Redbirds scored five runs on seven hits. Baker was 2-for-4, including a walk and two RBI. Saggese was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Bryan Torres recorded the lone Redbirds extra-base hit, a double. Four out of the five Redbirds runs were scored with two outs.

On the bases, Torres and Antico each tallied their eighth steal of the season. The Redbirds did not commit an error on defense.

Memphis is 31-24 on the season after an 8-4 road trip and taking four of six from Durham. The Redbirds are tied for third place in the International League West Division. They will head home to AutoZone Park to begin a six-game set with the Indianapolis Indians on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s game: vs. Indianapolis (PIT), RHP Michael McGreevy (6-1, 3.02) vs. TBA. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CT.

Springfield Cardinals 5, Northwest Arkansas Naturals 4

The Double-A Springfield Cardinals took Sunday’s series finale over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Hammons Field to secure the series split.

Pete Hansen started his 10th game for the Cardinals. The left-hander tossed five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Austin Love fired two scoreless frames in relief of Hansen and picked up his first win of 2025. Luis Gastelum struck out three and did not allow a hit in the eighth and ninth innings to collect his first save of the season, and the 10th of his career.

Springfield pounced in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Noah Mendlinger hit a lead-off single, and scored on a home run by Leonardo Bernal.a two-run shot.

The Cardinals doubled their lead in the third.

JJ Wetherholt drew a walk, and scored on Bernal’s second two-run home run of the game, his eighth blast of the season.

The Naturals scored a run in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to tie the game at four. The Cardinals regained the lead in the seventh.

Dakota Harris was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Ramon Mendoza walked to put two runners on base. Mendoza and Harris advanced to second and third base, respectively, on a balk. Harris crossed home plate on a Mendlinger sacrifice fly to put Springfield in front 5-4.

Springfield’s bullpen threw four no-hit innings to secure the victory.

The Cardinals scored five runs on four hits. Bernal was 2-for-4, including a pair of two-run home runs for four total RBI. Mendlinger was 2-for-4, including a run scored and one RBI.

Springfield did not steal a base in the game.

On defense, second baseman Wetherholt highlighted an error-free game with a highlight-reel dive and throw to first base to prevent the go-ahead run from scoring.

Springfield is 27-24 on the season following the series split with Northwest Arkansas, and leads the Texas League North Division by one game. They will travel to Riders Field in Frisco, Texas, to begin a six-game set with the Frisco RoughRiders on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s game: at Frisco (TEX). Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CT.

Peoria Chiefs 6 at Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8

The High-A Peoria Chiefs lost a close contest to the Timber Rattlers in Wisconsin in the series finale on Sunday.

Jose Davila started his 10th game for the Chiefs. The right-hander pitched four innings and allowed two runs on two hits, three walks, and a season-high seven strikeouts. Tanner Jacobson surrendered four runs across two innings in relief of Davila, and took the loss. Jawilme Ramirez yielded two runs in the seventh inning. Benjamin Arias lowered his ERA to 1.99 with a scoreless eighth inning.

Wisconsin took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Peoria split the lead in half in the second.

Brayden Jobert singled, and moved to second base on a passed ball. Jobert advanced to third base on a Ryan Campos groundout. Zach Levenson singled in Jobert to narrow the gap to 2-1.

The Chiefs took the lead with a three-run third inning.

Won-Bin Cho singled, and scored on Levenson’s fourth home run of the year, a two-run blast, to put Peoria in front 3-2.

Michael Curialle followed with a double. Jon Jon Gazdar lined the second double of the inning to score Curialle and extend the lead to 4-2.

Wisconsin regained the lead with four runs in the sixth and a pair of runs in the seventh to take an 8-4 lead. Peoria moved within three in the eighth inning.

Campos and Cho drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning. Campos moved to third base on a double play, and scored via a wild pitch.

Down by three in the ninth, the Chiefs looked for a late comeback.

Trey Paige walked and scored on a Jobert double to inch the Chiefs closer at 8-6.

Peoria was unable to rally further in the loss.

The Chiefs scored six runs on 12 hits. Levenson was 2-for-4, including a two-run home run and three RBI. Jobert went 3-for-5, with a double, a run scored, and one RBI. Gazdar tallied two hits, including a double and one RBI. The Chiefs were just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Peoria did not steal a base in the game.

On defense, right fielder Cho committed a fielding error. Jobert threw out a runner at third base from left field.

Peoria is 19-31 on the season after taking just one of six from Wisconsin, and reside in fifth place in the Midwest League West Division. They will head home to Dozer Park to begin a six-game series with the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s game: vs. Quad Cities (KC). Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM CT.

Palm Beach Cardinals vs. St. Lucie Mets (postponed) 

The Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals’ series finale with the St. Lucie Mets was postponed due to rain and field conditions at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Sunday.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader at a later date.

Palm Beach is 23-27 on the season after taking just one of five from St. Lucie, and reside in third place in the Florida State League East Division. They will travel to Lee Health Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida, to begin a six-game set with the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s game: at Fort Myers (MIN). Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM CT.

FCL Cardinals (off-day)

The Florida Complex League Cardinals were off on Sunday and will play a road contest with the FCL Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium Complex on Monday.

The FCL Cardinals are 9-9 on the season.

Monday’s game: at FCL Marlins. Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM CT.

DSL Cardinals:

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals will begin their 2025 season at St. Louis Cardinals DR Complex in a home contest with the DSL Rockies on Monday.

Monday’s game: vs. DSL Rockies. Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 AM CT.
