The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-2 on Friday. Our Players of the Day are Palm Beach starter Austin Warner, who pitched six scoreless innings and fanned six, and first baseman Ryan McCarvel, whose two-run home run in the 10th sealed the victory over Jupiter.

The Redbirds fell in New Orleans on Friday as Sean Gilmartin suffered his second loss of the season. Gilmartin pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on three hits while striking out three and walking four. Mike O’Reilly tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief following Gilmartin. Arturo Reyes pitched the last two innings and surrendered two insurance runs after his team had pulled to within one.
Memphis got on the board in the first on a double play ball from Patrick Wisdom following Oscar Mercado’s leadoff double and Rangel Ravelo’s single. The Redbirds didn’t score again until the eighth when Ravelo blasted a two-run home run to center field. Ravelo went 2-for-4 on the night, as did Mercado, who scored twice.
In the field, Tyler O’Neill had an outfield assist, throwing a runner out at home.
The Redbirds are 34-22 on the season and are in first place in the PCL American Southern.
Saturday’s game: at New Orleans, Ryan Helsley (2-0, 1.29) 6:00 CT.
The Cardinals couldn’t get by the Missions in a Friday night contest at Hammons Field. Starter Connor Jones pitched six innings, giving up five runs on eight hits. The right hander struck out two and walked one and suffered his second loss of the season. Jacob Evans added two scoreless innings in relief and Yeison Medina tossed a scoreless ninth.
The Cardinals put up two runs in the first to take an early lead. They came on a sac fly by Lane Thomas and a single by Evan Mendoza. A leadoff Granden Goetzman triple followed by Victor Roache’s single plated the third and final run in the sixth. Goetzman and Stefan Trosclair each went 2-for-4. Roache was 3-for-4.
In the field, Jeremy Martinez had a passed ball. Goetzman made an outfield assist.
The Cardinals are 27-27 on the season and are tied for first place in the Texas League North.
Saturday’s game: vs. San Antonio, Anthony Shew (1-1, 8.10) 6:10 CT.
Palm Beach 4 at Jupiter 2 (10 innings)
The Cardinals blanked the Hammerheads in extra innings on Friday at Roger Dean. Starter Austin Warner pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits while fanning six and walking none. Jesus Cruz gave up one run in the eighth, and Jason Zgardowski surrendered a run in the ninth. Zgardowski was tagged with a blown save but also was the winning pitcher. Will Latcham pitched a scoreless 10th to earn his sixth save.
The Cardinals got on the board in the third on an RBI ground out by Shane Billings. Palm Beach added a run in the seventh on Jose Godoy’s double. The Hammerheads scored in the eighth and ninth to tie the game and send it in to extra innings. In the 10th, Ryan McCarvel’s two-run home run gave the Cardinals the lead and the victory. Andy Young was the only Cardinal with multiple hits, as he was 2-for-4.
The Cardinals are 29-20 on the season and are in second place in the FSL South.
Saturday’s game: at Jupiter, TBA 4:30 CT.
The Chiefs edged the Lumberkings at Clinton on Friday. Peoria fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but put up one run in the second on Angel Moreno’s RBI single. In the third, Matt Fiedler drove in two on a line drive single to left to tie the game. The winning run came home in the ninth on a solo home run by Elehuris Montero, his sixth of the season. Jose Martinez was the only Chief with multiple hits, as he was 2-for-3.
Peoria starter Alvaro Seijas pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits. The right hander struck out six and walked none. Fabian Blanco pitched the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings and earned the win.
Moreno was caught stealing for the first time in his initial attempt.
The Chiefs are 31-24 on the season and are in first place in the Midwest League Western.
Saturday’s game: at Clinton, Johan Oveido (1-4, 6.56) 6:30 CT.
