Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 19, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 3-2 on Sunday with Palm Beach splitting a twin bill. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Lars Nootbaar, was a triple shy of the cycle with two home runs in his Memphis rehab assignment. Other standouts include Masyn Winn, Nick Dunn and Leonardo Bernal.

Memphis 10 at Jacksonville 4

The Memphis Redbirds (37-32) defeated the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (MIA, 30-38) on Sunday at 121 Financial Ballpark.

In a bullpen game, James Naile yielded a run in three frames on three hits and two punchouts. Andrew Suárez gave up one run in three innings with two hits and a walk. The left-hander fanned two and earned his fourth win.

The Redbirds struck in the first as Lars Nootbaar blasted a two-run homer in Game 2 of his rehab assignment. Jacksonville responded with one in the bottom half. In the third, Nootbaar doubled to plate one and Juan Yepez hit a two-run homer, his fourth in Triple-A.

Yepez brought one across in the fourth via groundout. Errol Robinson hit an RBI double in the fifth. In the sixth, Nootbaar hit another home run, a solo shot. Kramer Robertson brought two across in the ninth with a double.

In the late innings out of the bullpen, Ryan Loutos struck out two in a scoreless inning. JoJo Romero pitched a scoreless frame. Jake Walsh surrendered two runs in the ninth inning on four hits and two strikeouts.

In his rehab assignment, Nootbaar was a triple shy of the cycle with four hits, two home runs, four RBI and three runs. Masyn Winn went 4-for-6 with a double and two runs. Tres Barrera, Yepez, Robertson and Robinson all had two hits. The lineup recorded eight extra base hits.

The Redbirds went 3-3 against the Jumbo Shrimp this week. They are in fifth place, 8.5 games back of first in the International League West.

Springfield 8, Tulsa 10

After a rain delay, the Springfield Cardinals (31-32) fell to the Tulsa Drillers (LAD, 40-23) at Hammons Field.

Starter Wilfredo Pereira went five innings and was charged with four runs. The right-hander yielded five hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Bryan Pope took his first Double-A loss after he gave up three runs in an inning.

The Cardinals scored four runs between the second and fifth innings. Justin Toerner brought in a run in the second and Nick Dunn scored on a balk in the third. In the fourth, Jose Alvarez grounded into a forceout to plate one and Dunn came across again, this time on a wild pitch. Tulsa put up seven runs in the sixth.

Jose Martinez was touched for three runs, one earned, in two innings on two hits and two walks. In his first appearance since May 31st, Brandon Komar threw a scoreless ninth with two punchouts.

After the Drillers scored three more in the eighth, the Cardinals attempted a comeback. In the home eighth, Mike Antico drove in two runs with a single. Dunn hit a two-run home run, his fourth of the year. However, Tulsa struck out the side in the ninth inning to end the game.

Dunn went 4-for-4 and was a triple shy of the cycle. The 26-year-old walked, had two RBI and came across twice. Toerner and L.J. Jones recorded two hits apiece. The lineup had 10 hits, five walks and went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Dunn, Toerner and Arquímedes Gamboa all took a base. Dunn was also caught stealing. Alvarez and Jacob Buchberger both committed errors.

The Cardinals went 3-3 versus Tulsa this week and are nine games back of first in the Texas League North.

Peoria 7 at Lansing 6

The Peoria Chiefs (31-32) topped the Lansing Lugnuts (OAK, 29-33) at Jackson field on Sunday afternoon.

Alex Cornwell threw five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk. TCN’s no. 37 prospect fanned three and earned his fifth win.

The Chiefs scored their first run in the second inning. On a sac bunt from Ramon Mendoza, Jeremy Rivas came across. Lansing responded with two runs in the bottom half.

In the fourth, Peoria put up six runs. Jimmy Crooks scored on an error and Mendoza brought in one with a sacrifice fly. Tyler Reichenborn bunted to make the score 4-2. Nathan Church and Aaron McKeithan recorded RBI singles and Church came across.

In relief, Gustavo Rodriguez surrendered four runs in one inning. Roy Garcia pitched the final three innings and struck out six to earn his second High-A save.

McKeithan, Rivas and Thomas Francisco all recorded two hits. Mendoza drove in two. The Chiefs went 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Victor Scott II took his 48th bag of the season and now is at the top of professional baseball in stolen bases. Rivas made a throwing error.

Peoria went 3-3 against the Lugnuts this week. They are in second place, 5.5 games behind Cedar Rapids in the Midwest League West.

Palm Beach 2, St. Lucie 3 (Game 1)

In the continuation of Saturday’s suspended contest, the Palm Beach Cardinals (35-27) were edged by the St. Lucie Mets (NYM, 22-38) on Sunday.

Starter Pete Hansen pitched a scoreless inning before the game was postponed. On Sunday, Hancel Rincon tossed six innings and gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk. TCN’s no. 44 prospect fanned two.

The Mets took a two-run lead in the second inning. In the fourth, the Beach Birds tied the game. Leonardo Bernal brought across R.J. Yeager via sacrifice fly. Won-Bin Cho came across on a balk.

St. Lucie took the lead in the eighth inning. Henry Gomez yielded a run in two innings on a hit and two walks. The right-hander fanned one and took his first loss.

Alex Iadisernia had the only multi-hit game with two. Palm Beach had seven hits, two walks and went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.

On the bases, Iadisernia stole a bag and was picked off. Cho took his 16th base. Iadisernia also had an outfield assist. Rincon committed an error and the defense turned three double plays.

Palm Beach 16, St. Lucie 8 (7 innings, Game 2)

The Palm Beach Cardinals (36-27) walloped the St. Lucie Mets (NYM, 23-39) in a seven-inning contest at Roger Dean Stadium.

In a bullpen game, Jose Davila tossed the first three innings and yielded three runs on five hits and a walk. The right-hander struck out four. Augusto Calderon pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up three runs.

The Cardinals took a two-run lead in the second inning. Cho and Chris Rotondo singled to plate a run each. After the Mets scored three runs in the third, Palm Beach answered with three in the bottom half. Adanson Cruz doubled to clear the loaded bases.

In the fourth, Rotondo recorded an RBI double to score two runs. Javier Bolivar blasted a solo shot in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-6.

Joseph King allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings with two hits and one walk. Tanner Jacobson earned his first win after a scoreless 1 1/3 frames.

The Beach Birds put up eight runs in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Michael Curialle was hit by a pitch, Bernal scored on a wild pitch and Lizandro Espinoza walked. Iadisernia singled to plate two and Cho plated one. To close out the inning, Bernal doubled to bring two across.

Rotondo and Cruz drove in three runs apiece. Bernal went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two RBI and two runs. Three different players had two hits and three players had two or more walks. The lineup recorded 10 hits, 11 walks and left seven runners on base.

Cho stole his 17th bag of the season and his second of the day. Cruz committed a fielding error.

Palm Beach went 2-4 against the last place Mets this week. They are in first place in the Florida State League East by three games and have clinched the first-half title.
