The St. Louis Cardinals system went 5-1 on Friday. Our Player of the Day is Springfield designated hitter Johan Mieses, whose three-run home run gave his team the lead. Memphis won in extra innings and State College prevailed in the season opener. Peoria and DSL Red also claimed victory.

Memphis 5, Salt Lake 4 (10 innings)

The Redbirds edged the Bees in extra innings at AutoZone Park on Friday. The walk off win in the 10th, coupled with the 11-5 victory on Wednesday gave Memphis the series edge over Salt Lake.
The Redbirds got on the board in the first inning via an RBI single by John Nogowski that tied the game 1-1. The Bees responded with three additional runs that took the score to 4-1 headed into the bottom frame of the fifth.
Conner Capel led off the fifth with a solo home run to left center field. Joe Hudson singled and later scored on double by Rangel Ravelo. The lead was cut to 4-3.
Ravelo thumped a solo home run to left center in the eighth to tie the game for the second time. In the 10th, with Edmundo Sosa on second base, Adolis Garcia singled to center to plate Sosa and the Redbirds get the victory 5-4.
Ravelo had three hits and Garcia, Nagowski, Capel, and Hudson each had two.
Starter Anthony Shew tossed six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. The right hander fanned six and walked two. Hunter Cervenka pitched a scoreless seventh. Edgar Gonzalez followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Tommy Layne ended with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Layne got the win, his second.
Garcia was picked off and caught stealing. Capel had an outfield assist.
Memphis is 29-39 on the season and is in third place in the PCL American North, eight games behind the Iowa Cubs.

Springfield 4, Corpus Christi 2

The Cardinals were the home victors over the Corpus Christi Hooks on Friday. Starter Angel Rondon tossed six innings, giving up two runs on four hits. The right hander struck out three, but the outing was marred by six walks. Mitchell Osnowitz, Connor Jones, and Bryan Dobzanski each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Dobzanski earned his first save since his promotion to Springfield. Rondon got the win.
The Hooks took a 1-0 lead in the first and increased the lead to 2-0 in the third. In the fourth, Player of the Day Johan Mieses blasted a three-run home run to left center field to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead. Alberto Triunfel drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh to increase the lead to the final 4-2 score.
Only Mieses had multiple hits, with two.
Rayder Ascanio was caught stealing. Catcher Jose Godoy made an error on a pickoff attempt.
The Cardinals are 27-40 and in last place in the Texas League North and have been eliminated from first half playoff contention.

Palm Beach – off
Palm Beach is off due to the Florida State League All-Star Break. The FSL All-Star Game will be played on Saturday. Cardinals selected to participate in the All Star game are C Julio Rodriguez and pitchers Alex Fagalde, Perry DellaValle and Ben Yokley. Pitchers Angel Rondon and Bryan Dobzanski plus OF Justin Toerner, were also selected but will not participate due to promotion to Double-A Springfield.
The All-Star Game will be played at the Cardinals’ home park, Roger Dean Stadium, for the first time in 19 years.

The Chiefs were winners over Burlington on Friday at Dozer Park. One big inning was the key to the victory.
Burlington took the 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Chiefs tied it up with in the third, scored without a hit. Wadye Ynfante was hit by a pitch and stole second base. He advanced to third on a groundout by Nolan Gorman and scored on a groundout by Delvin Perez.
The Bees took back the lead with four runs in the top of fourth, but Peoria responded in the bottom of the frame with five runs to take a 6-5 lead. Alexis Wilson hit a two-run double to left. Ynfante plated two more on a single and scored on a Perez bunt single.
The Chief added to their lead with two scores in the fifth on RBI singles by Josh Shaw and Ynfante.
Ynfante, Wilson, and Bryce Denton each had two hits. Ynfante stole his seventh base of the season.
Starter Colin Schmid pitched three innings and gave up five runs on four hits. The left hander fanned six and walked four. Franyel Casadilla tossed a scoreless fourth. Parker Kelly hurled three scoreless innings to earn the win. Sebastian Tabata and Evan Sisk each added a scoreless inning.
The Chiefs are 29-38 and are in seventh place in the Midwest League West, 13.5 games back of Quad Cities, and have been eliminated from first half playoff contention.

State College 4 at Williamsport 3

The Spikes began their 2019 season with a win over the Williamsport Crosscutters at historic Bowman Field on Friday. Seven Williamsport errors aided the Spikes in their victory.
Starter Iohan Paniagua pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits. The 19-year old right hander struck out one and walked four. Michael Baird tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. Fabian Blanco added the final two scoreless innings.
Williamsport took the early 1-0 lead, but the Spikes tied it in the third when Moises Castillo singled and later scored on a throwing error on a force out. The Crosscutters regained the lead with one run in the home third.
The Spikes added two in the fourth when Donivan Williams singled and later scored on a fielding error, and Andres Luna followed with a RBI double. Kevin Woodall’s solo home run in the fifth increased the lead to 4-2.
Luna was the only Spikes hitter with multiple hits, with two. Shortstop Castillo made a fielding error.

DSL Cardinals Red 13 at DSL Mets2 6
The Cardinals Red gave the Mets pitching staff a shellacking on Friday. The Red offense had 13 runs on 15 hits, an offensive outburst punctuated by a nine-run third inning.
Red got on the board initially with a run in the second inning on Bryan Matute’s RBI single. Then came the third inning onslaught. Alexander Samuel drew a bases loaded walk. Juan Sanchez cleared the bases on a double to right field. A wild pitch scored Sanchez. Albert Inoa plated a run on a single. With the bases loaded a second time, Claudio Ramirez hit a second bases-clearing double. The score was 10-0.
The Mets added a run in the fourth. The Cardinals responded with a run in the fifth on a Sander Mora single.
The Mets scored a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to decrease the lead to 10-6. In the eighth, the Cardinals added the final two scores on a Samuel single and a wild pitch.
Cardinals Red starter Ludwin Jimenez tossed five innings and gave up two runs on four hits. The right hander struck out two and walked three. Hancel Rincon surrendered four runs in his two innings of relief. Larimel Soriano and Oliver Lopez each pitched a scoreless frame. Jimenez was the winning pitcher.
Matute stole his third base of the season.
The Cardinals Red are 6-6 and are in third place in the DSL San Pedro Division.

DSL Cardinals Blue 4, DSL Phillies Red 6
The Cardinals Blue were defeated by the Phillies Red on Friday at home. Blue starting pitcher Yordy Richard pitched three innings in which he gave up four runs on four hits while striking out three and walking three. Dionys Rodriguez followed with two clean, scoreless innings with no hits allowed and four strikeouts. Luis Tena surrendered one run in his two innings. Left hander Nelson Prada also went two innings and allowed one run. Tena took the loss.
The Cardinals Blue fell behind 4-0 early but bounced back with four runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Jose Zapata doubled to plate a run, and scored on a throwing error. Darlin Moquete singled for the third run of the inning. Moquete stole second base and a fourth run came in on a throwing error by the Phillies catcher.
The Phillies would add two more runs, but the Cardinals could not score further.
Moquete and Elvin De Jesus each stole a base. It was Moquete’s fifth and De Jesus’ second.
Tena made an error on pickoff attempt. Gustavo Rodriguez and Leudy Pena each had an outfield assist.
The Cardinals Blue have a record of 6-3 and are in second place in the DSL South.
