Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 13, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-4 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Peoria RH Inohan Paniagua, pitched five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Other standouts include Dakota Harris, Zach Levenson, Chase Davis and Darlin Saladin.

Memphis 4 at Norfolk 5

The Triple-A Redbirds lost to the Tides by one run on the road Wednesday. Starter Sem Robberse pitched five innings, gave up four runs on three hits, struck out six and walked five.

Back with the Redbirds, Packy Naughton relieved Robberse and threw a scoreless sixth. Nick Raquet surrendered one run in the final two innings and took the loss.

Norfolk took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Memphis answered in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run by Jared Young to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Tides came back to plate one run in the home fifth to widen the lead to 4-2.

Matt Koperniak hit a solo home run in the sixth to shrink the lead to 4-3 before Memphis tied the game in the top of the eighth. César Prieto doubled and scored on a double by Thomas Saggese.

Norfolk came right back and took back the lead one final time with a run in the bottom of the eighth to go up 5-4.

The Redbirds offense scored four runs on eight hits. Koperniak was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Prieto was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Young had two RBI.

Memphis 34-31 on the season and is in fifth place in the International League West, 9.5 games back of Omaha.

Thursday’s game:  at Norfolk, Gordon Graceffo RHP (6-5, 4.50) vs. Chayce McDermott RHP (2-3, 3.57) 11:05 CT

Springfield 2, NW Arkansas 7

The Double-A Cardinals fell to the Naturals by a 7-2 score at Hammons Field on Wednesday. In his Double-A debut, starter Cooper Hjerpe pitched 2 2/3 innings, gave up five runs on four hits, struck out three and walked four. Hjerpe took the loss.

Back with Springfield, Alex Cornwell relieved Hjerpe and surrendered two runs in three innings. Jack Ralston added 2 1/3 scoreless innings on a hit, a walk and two strikeouts. Leonardo Taveras tossed a scoreless ninth.

NW Arkansas took 1-0 lead in the first inning. Springfield answered with two runs in the home first to lead 2-1. Jacob Buchberger drew a walk. Mike Antico was hit by a pitch. R.J. Yeager singled and Buchberger scored. Aaron McKeithan plated Antico on a ground out.

The Naturals came back with four runs in the third, and single runs in the fourth and fifth to lead 7-2. The Cardinals were held scoreless for the remainder of the game.

The Springfield offense scored two runs on six hits. Yeager was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

On the bases, Antico stole his eighth base of the season.

Springfield is 33-26 on the season and is in first place in the Texas League North.

Thursday’s game:  vs. NW Arkansas, Trent Baker RHP (3-4, 5.12) vs. Mason Barnett RHP (2-4, 6.14) 7:05 CT.

Peoria 6, South Bend 2

The High-A Chiefs defeated the visiting Cubs by the score of 6-2 at Dozer Park on Wednesday. Starter Inohan Paniagua pitched five scoreless innings, allowed four hits and struck out eight to earn his fifth win of the season.

Dionys Rodriguez relieved Paniagua and surrendered two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Gustavo Rodriguez tossed the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his first save.

Peoria took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Zach Levenson singled and came home on Won-Bin Chi’s two-run home run. The Chiefs added a run in the third on a solo home run by Levenson to lead 3-0.

Peoria continued to score, putting up two runs in the fifth to increase the lead to 5-0. Levenson doubled and scored on a single by Chris Rotondo. Dakota Harris plated Rotondo on a single.

South Bend finally got on the board with single runs in the sixth and seventh to cut the lead to 5-2. The Chiefs answered with one final run in the bottom of the seventh to win 6-2. Rotondo doubled and later scored on a single by Harris.

Peoria scored six runs on 10 hits. Harris was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Rotondo was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Levenson was 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Cho had two RBI.

On the bases, Rotondo stole his first base. On defense, Joshua Baez had an outfield assist at second base.

Peoria is 22-37 on the season and is in last place in the Midwest League West, 15 games back of Wisconsin.

Thursday’s game:  vs. South Bend, Pete Hansen LHP (0-5, 5.19) vs. Ty Johnson RHP (0-1, 9.00) 6.35 CT.

Palm Beach 3 at Daytona 4 (seven innings, Game 1)

The Cardinals were edged by the Tortugas in the first game of a twin bill on Wednesday, making up Tuesday’s postponement. Starter Gerardo Salas pitched six innings, gave up four runs on five hits and struck out three. Salas took the loss, his fourth of the season.

The game was scoreless until the Cardinals put up two runs in the top of the fifth.  Kade Kretzschmar was hit by a pitch and advanced on a wild pitch. Sammy Hernandez drew a walk. Chase Davis plated Kretzschmar and Hernandez on a double.

Daytona immediately answered with three runs in the home fifth to lead 3-2.

The Cardinals added a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Travis Honeyman singled and later scored on a sac fly by Miguel Villarroel.

The Tortugas broke the tie with one run in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead 4-3.

The Cardinals offense scored three runs on five hits. Davis was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Honeyman was 2-for-3.

On defense, Kretzschmar had an outfield assist at first base.

Palm Beach 3 at Daytona 2 (seven innings, Game 2)

The Cardinals topped the Tortugas by one run in Wednesday’s nightcap. Starter Darlin Saladin pitched six innings, gave up one unearned run on four hits and struck out two to earn his fourth win of the season.

Zack Showalter relieved Saladin and surrendered one run in the seventh but still received his fifth save.

Daytona posted one run in the fourth inning to lead.  The Cardinals came back with two runs in the sixth. Kade Kretzschmar tripled and scored on a balk. Chase Davis hit a solo home run.

The Beach Birds added a run in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to 3-1. Adari Grant walked and scored on a double by Sammy Hernandez.

The Tortugas answered with one run in the home seventh to shrink the lead to 3-2.

Palm Beach scored three runs on seven hits. Davis was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kretzschmar was 2-for-2. Trey Paige was 2-for-4.

Grant stole two bases. Travis Honeyman was caught stealing. On defense, Chase Adkison made a throwing error. Jose Cordoba had an outfield assist at home plate. Saladin picked a runner off second base.

The Cardinals are 33-26 on the season and are in first place in the Florida State League East.

Thursday’s game:  at Daytona, RH Ixan Henderson (3-1, 3.21) vs. TBD 5:35 CT.

FCL Cardinals – Off day

The 12-16 rookie Cardinals are in fifth/last place in the Florida Complex League East Division, seven games behind the first place Marlins.

Thursday’s game:  vs. FCL Nationals, RH Leonel Sequera (0-4, 6.65) vs. TBD 11:00 am CT.

DSL Cardinals 3, DSL Tigers2 4 (eight innings)

The Dominican Cardinals lost to the Tigers 2 by a 5-3 score on Wednesday. Starter Keiverson Ramirez pitched four innings, gave up two runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked two.

Jesus Garcia relieved Ramirez and threw three perfect innings with four strikeouts. Kener Perez surrendered two unearned runs in the eighth. Perez took the loss.

The Tigers went up 1-0 in the top of the first. The Cardinals answered in the home half of the first to tie the game. Yairo Padilla drew a walk. Facundo Velasquez singled. Padillo scored on a single by Edward Guribe.

The Tigers added one run in the third to lead 2-1. The Cardinals knotted the game up again in the fifth. Padilla tripled and scored on a sac fly by Bracewell Taveras.

In the top of the eighth, the Tigers produced two runs to regain the lead 4-2. The Cardinals responded with just one run in the home eighth as they ended up one run short. With Velasquez on second, Taveras singled to bring him home.

The offense scored three runs on eight hits. Guribe was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cristofer Lebron was 2-for-3. Taveras had two RBI.

On the bases, Guribe stole his first base of the season. Brayan Amoroso swiped his first bag.

On defense, Taveras made a throwing error. Amoroso had an outfield assist at home plate. Paulo Asprilla had a passed ball.

The Cardinals are 2-4 on the season.

Thursday’s game: at DSL White Sox, RH Andrew Bolivar (0-0, 0.00) vs. TBD 10:00 am CT.
