Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 10, 2018

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-5 on Saturday.  Our Player of the Day is Palm Beach third baseman Taylor Bryant, whose two-run home run keyed the Beach Birds’ victory over Daytona.

Memphis 5, Reno 8

Ramon Urias (Springfield Cardinals)

The Redbirds were edged by the Reno Aces at AutoZone Park on Saturday.  Starter Ryan Helsley had a poor outing, pitching only three innings and giving up five runs on six hits.  The right hander struck out three and walked two. Arturo Reyes followed with two innings, surrendering three runs on five hits.  Conner Greene added two scoreless frames.  Matt Bowman and Greg Holland, both rehabbing in Memphis, pitched a scoreless inning each.  Helsley was the losing pitcher.

The Redbirds offense was held scoreless until the seventh inning, by which point they were down 8-0.  In the seventh, Randy Arozarena drew a walk, Adolis Garcia doubled, and Arozarena scored on a double play off the bat of Rangel Ravelo.  The offense put up four in the eighth, when Carson Kelly hit a solo home run, Max Schrock launched a solo home run, and Ramon Urias added a two-run blast.  The Redbirds were unable to pull any closer in the ninth.    Kelly went 2-for-4.  Oscar Mercado was 2-for-2.

In the field, Kelly had a passed ball.

The Redbirds are 37-26 on the season and are in first place in the PCL American Southern Division.

Springfield 2, Tulsa 6

Matt Pearce (Palm Beach Cardinals)

The Cardinals fell to the Drillers at Hammons Field on Saturday.  The Cardinals got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning on a sac fly by Andrew Knizner.  Springfield didn’t score again until the eighth on a solo home run by Evan Mendoza.  Victor Roache and Blake Drake were both 2-for-4.

Starter Matt Pearce pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits while fanning five and walking none.  Ian McKinney took the seventh and surrendered two runs, one earned, on two hits.  Landon Beck tossed the final two innings, also allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits.  Pearce took the loss.

Pearce made an error on a pickoff attempt.  Tommy Edman committed a throwing error and a fielding error.  Knizner had a passed ball.

The Cardinals are 30-31 on the season and are tied for second place in the Texas League North.

Palm Beach 5, Daytona 1

John Kilichowski (Peoria Chiefs)

The Cardinals defeated the Dayton Tortugas in Jupiter on Saturday in what appeared to be a bullpen game.  Austin Sexton pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit, striking out four and walking two.  John Kilichowski contributed three scoreless innings.  Robbie Gordon tossed 1 1/3 innings and surrendered one run.  Jason Zgardowski pitched the final 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his second save.  Kilichowski was given the win.

The Cardinals offense put up four runs in the first three innings.  In the first, Johan Mieses had an RBI single to left field.  In the second, Chase Pinder’s double brought a second run home.  Taylor Bryant’s two-run home in the third gave Palm Beach the 4-0 lead.  The Cardinals added a final run in the eighth on a double play off the bat of Bryant.  Pinder went 2-for-3 and Mieses was 2-for-4 and stole his second base in two attempts.

The Cardinals are 35-21 on the season and are in first place in the FSL South

Peoria 5, Quad Cities 7

Elehuris Montero (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs were edged at Dozer Park by the River Bandits on Saturday.  The offense was held scoreless until the eighth, when they put five runs on the board in an attempt to catch up.  The attempt fell short.  Jose Martinez drew a leadoff walk, and Scott Hurst added an infield single. Both advanced on a wild pitch.  Zach Kirtley walked to load the bases.  Elehuris Montero doubled to score Martinez and Hurst.  Kirtley came home on Dennis Ortega’s single.  J.R. Davis’ single plated Montero.  The final run of the inning came home on a sac fly by Bryce Denton.  Dennis Ortega was the only Chief with multiple hits, as he was 2-for-4.

Starter Alex Fagalde went 4 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits.   The right hander struck out four and walked one.  Kodi Whitley surrendered two runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief.  Bryan Dobzanski pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed one additional run.  Fagalde suffered the loss, his second.

The Chiefs are 35-27 on the season and are in second place in the Midwest League Western Division.

DSL Cardinals Blue 6, DSL Nationals 20

The Cardinal Blue team suffered a major shellacking at the hands of the Nationals on Saturday.  Starter Francis Ventura pitched five innings and gave up five runs, three earned, on seven hits.  The right hander fanned three and walked two.  Larimel Soriano started the sixth and surrendered five runs while recording only one out.  Saniel Santana allowed two more runs in that inning before getting the final two outs.  Josue Ramirez recorded no outs in the seventh while giving up four runs. Miguel Yedis followed and pitched the seventh and eighth while allowing two runs. Dionys Rodriguez relinquished three runs in the ninth, and was replaced with two outs by Luis Tena, who got the final out but allowed two inherited runners to score.

The Blue team scored six runs on four hits.  In the first inning, a run came home on a fielding error.  A second run scored in the fourth on a wild pitch.  In the sixth, Yowelfy Rosario tripled and plated a run.  A second run in the inning came home on a wild pitch.  The final two runs scored in the ninth on bases-loaded walks by Freddy De Jesus and Diowill Burgos.  Rosario went 2-for-3.

On the base paths, Pablo Gomez was caught stealing for the first time in four attempts.  In the field, Ventura made a throwing error, but also picked a runner off second base.  Carlos Soler had an outfield assist, throwing a runner out at home.

The Cardinals Blue are 5-2 on the young season and are tied for second place in the DSL South.

DSL Cardinals Red 1 at DSL Dbacks2 2

The Red team suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Dbacks2 on Saturday.  The offense managed its run in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Claudio Ramirez.  The only other extra base hit was a double by Jesus Orrechia.

Starter Ludwin Jimenez tossed four scoreless innings, allowing two hits, striking out seven and walking one.  Luis Ortiz followed with four scoreless innings out of the pen.  Jose Geronimo surrendered the two deciding Dbacks runs in the ninth.  The tying run scored on a wild pitch.  After Geronimo left with two outs and the bases loaded, Wilman Madera walked the winning run home.  That run was charged to Geronimo, who took the loss.

Adanson Cruz stole his third base in three attempts.  Joerlin De Los Santos stole his second base in three attempts.  Luis Montano was picked off first base.  Franklin Soto made a fielding error and a throwing error.  Elvin De Jesus committed a fielding error also.

The Cardinals Red are 3-4 on the young season and are tied for third place in the DSL San Pedro Division.
