A look back at last week and a preview of the upcoming week across the St Louis Cardinals Minor League system. All six clubs were off Sunday, July 7 and Monday, July 8. The Cardinals had no league Players or Pitchers of the Week for the period of July 1-7.
Memphis Redbirds
The Triple-A Memphis Redbirds (7-5) just finished a six-game series against division rival Nashville (6-6) (MIL), during which they went 3-3. The Redbirds are tied with Iowa (CHC) atop the West Division standings. For the best second half record in the International League, both teams are three games behind East-leading Rochester (WSH).
Memphis begins a six-game home series versus East Division rival Norfolk (BAL) on Tuesday, July 9th.
Tuesday’s game: vs. Norfolk (4-7), 7:05 pm CT, RHP Adam Kloffenstein (4-5, 4.48)
Springfield Cardinals
Double-A Springfield (7-5) is fresh off an excellent series, taking five of six over fourth-place NW Arkansas (5-7) (KC). The second-place S-Cards trail first-place Tulsa (LAD) by one game in the Texas League North Division standings.
Fifth (and last) place Wichita (MIN) comes to Hammons Field for a six-game series beginning Tuesday.
Tuesday’s game: vs. fifth-place Wichita (4-8), 7:05 pm CT, RH Edwin Nuñez (0-5, 6.90)
Peoria Chiefs
Last Monday, High-A Peoria (8-7) was in a three-way tie for fourth place in the West Division standings of the Midwest League, three games behind Cedar Rapids (MIN). A very strong series in which they took five-of-six over arch rival South Bend (5-10) (CHC) leaves the Chiefs in sole possession of third place, while dropping the Cubs into sixth and last place. Peoria remains three games behind division-leading Cedar Rapids.
The Chiefs are at home this week, hosting fourth-place Quad Cities (KC).
Tuesday’s game: at Quad Cities (7-8), 6:30 pm CT, RH Darlin Saladin (2-0, 0.77)
Palm Beach Cardinals
Low-A Palm Beach (9-5) replicated Springfield’s and Peoria’s results last week, going 5-1 against third place (and Jupiter stable mate) Jupiter (6-9) (MIA). Those results placed the Cardinals atop the East Division standings of the Florida State League, one game up on Daytona (CIN).
Up next is a home stand versus Clearwater (PHI), the bottom dwellers of the West Division, providing Palm Beach with an excellent opportunity to pad their division lead.
Tuesday’s game: vs. Clearwater (5-10) (PHI), 6:30 pm ET/5:30 pm CT, RH Jason Savacool (2-3, 4.19)
FCL Cardinals
The rookie level Florida Complex League Cardinals (16-27) remain in fifth and last place in the East Division standings. That is the identical position where they were last Monday, but they now trail the East Division-leading FCL Marlins (MIA) by 16 1/2 games instead of 14 like last week.
Tuesday’s game: at first-place FCL Marlins (33-11), 12:00 pm ET/11:00 am CT, LH Yadiel Batista (0-5, 3.55)
DSL Cardinals
The rookie level Dominican Summer League Cardinals (12-12) went 3-1 with one postponement this past week and are in fifth place in the eight-team Central Division, seven games behind the Giants Black and 2 ½ games behind fourth-place Blue Jays.
The Dominican Birds have a four-game schedule this week due to a rare Monday off. This week’s bill of fare features two home contests sandwiched around two road games. The Dominican Cardinals’ only non-division game this week comes on Tuesday with Jefferson Moran looking to rebound from a three-inning start on Monday, July 1st.
Tuesday’s game: vs. DSL Twins (14-10) (MIN), 11:00 am ET/10:00 am CT, RHS Jefferson Moran (2-0, 3.15)
