Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 8, 2018

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 7-3 on Saturday.  Our Player of the Day is Johnson City center fielder Jonatan Machado, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI in the win over Pulaski.

Memphis 3, Omaha 2

Chris Ellis (Springfield Cardinals)

The Redbirds edged the Storm Chasers in a one run victory on Saturday.  All three Memphis runs were scored in the second inning.  Patrick Wisdom and Carson Kelly hit back to back singles to start the inning.  Oscar Mercado then followed with a double to center to score Wisdom.  After Adolis Garcia struck out, Alex Mejia hit a line drive single to center to plate Kelly and Mercado.  Kelly went 3-for-4 in the game.  Mejia was 2-for-3.

Memphis starter Chris Ellis earned his second win of the season.  Ellis pitched six innings and gave up two runs on five hits.  Connor Greene pitched a scoreless seventh.  Tommy Layne and Edward Mujica combined for the final two scoreless innings.  Mujica earned his eighth save.

Mejia stole his fifth base and was caught stealing for the second time in seven attempts.  Max Schrock made a fielding error.

The Redbirds are 55-34 and are in first place in the PCL Southern.

Springfield 5, Midland 4 (10 innings)

Sam Tewes (Palm Beach Cardinals)

The Cardinals edged the Rock Hounds in extra innings on Saturday.  Sam Tewes was the starting pitcher and he pitched seven innings, giving up one run on six hits.  Tewes struck out four and walked one.  Estarlin Arias started the eighth and gave up two doubles and a walk that resulted in one run.  With two outs in the inning, Arias was replaced by Yeison Medina who got the final out of the inning.  Medina returned for the ninth and gave up a double, a single and a walk for one run.  With one out Medina was replaced by Will Latcham.  Latcham allowed an inherited runner to score but got the final two outs.  Latcham was charged with the blown save but returned to pitch the tenth, allowed no runs and got the win.

Lane Thomas hit a solo home run in the second inning to put the Cardinals on the board.  In the third inning Jeremy Martinez doubled and Luke Dyskstra singled. Ramon Urias then hit a three run home run to left field.  The Cardinals were up 4-0 but Midland battled back to tie it up in the ninth and send the game into extra innings.  In the tenth, Martinez singled to plate the winning run.

Urias was caught stealing for the first time in two attempts.

The Cardinals are 37-49 overall, 4-12 in the second half, and are in third place in the Texas League North.

Palm Beach 0, Florida 2

Diego Cordero (St. Louis Cardinals)

The Cardinals were blanked by Florida on Saturday. The offense managed three hits, one a double by Brian O’Keefe, which was the only extra base hit.  O’Keefe also singled to end the game 2-for-4.

Palm Beach starter Diego Cordero pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up one unearned run on four hits.  Cordero was tagged with his first loss.  Junior Fernandez pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.  Eric Carter surrendered one run in the ninth.

Kramer Robertson made a fielding error.

The Cardinals are 46-34 overall, 7-9 in the second half to place them tied for second place in the FSL South.

Peoria 5 at Wisconsin 7

Wood Myers (Johnson City Cardinals)

The Chiefs were the losers to the Timber Rattlers in a Saturday contest.  Franyel Casadilla started for the Chiefs and pitched four innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits.  Levi MaVorhis followed with two scoreless innings of relief.  C.J. Saylor and Fabian Blanco combined for the final two scoreless innings of relief.

After the Chiefs fell behind 4-0 in the second inning, Elehuris Montero led off the fourth with a solo home run to put the Chiefs on the board.  Montero doubled in another run in the sixth.  A ninth inning rally put three more on the board but it wasn’t enough.  Bryce Denton led off with a solo home run.  Wood Myers later hit a two run shot to left.  Montero grounded out to end the inning.  Montero and Myers were both 2-for-5.  Nick Plummer, Yariel Gonzalez and Jose Martinez were each 2-for-4.

The Chiefs are 48-37 overall, 9-6 in the second half, and are tied for second place in the Midwest League Western Division.

State College 7 at Batavia 4

Brady Whalen (The Cardinal Nation)

The Spikes defeated the Batavia Muckdogs on Saturday.  State College got on the board first with two runs in the fourth.  Those runs were provided by a Brady Whalen two run home run.  The Spikes added four runs in the seventh. Imeldo Diaz and Matt Duce hit back to back singles.  Andres Luna was hit by a pitch.  Nick Dunn walked and Diaz scored.  Duce scored when Justin Toerner reached on fielding error. With the bases loaded, Brady Whalen walked and Luna scored.  Stanley Espinal then hit a sac fly to plate Dunn.  In the ninth, Toerner hit a solo home run for the seventh Spikes run.

Chris Holba was the State College starter.  Holba pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits.  Troy Montemayor followed with 1 1/3 innings of relief, giving up two unearned runs.  Montemayor was the winning pitcher.  Edgar Gonzalez pitched two scoreless innings and Kevin Hamann pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second save.

Espinal and Diaz made throwing errors.

The Spikes are 9-13 on the season and are in fifth place in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.

Johnson City 7, Pulaski 3

Jonatan Machado (Peoria Chiefs)

The Cardinals were victorious at home against the Pulaski Yankees on Saturday.  Oneiver Diaz was the starting pitcher, and he pitched two innings, giving up two runs on four hits.  Jacob Sylvester followed with 2 2/3 innings, surrendering one run on two hits.  Sylvester was the winning pitcher.  Parker Kelly (brother of Carson Kelly) pitched two scoreless innings.  Junior Gonzalez and Colin Schmid combined for the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

The Cardinal bats put up four runs in the second inning. Nolan Gorman led off with a walk.  Kevin Woodall and Zach Jackson also walked.  Carlos Soto then singled to score Gorman and Woodall.  Donivan Williams singled to score Jackson.  Soto later scored on a Leandro Cedeno walk.  In the second, Jonatan Machado plated two runs on a single.  Machado later hit an RBI single in the fifth to drive in the Cardinals’ seventh run.

Michael Perri made a fielding error.  Woodall had an outfield assist.

The Cardinals are 8-8 on the season and are in fourth place in the Appalachian League West.

GCL Cardinal 2, GCL Mets 6 (seven innings, Game 1 DH)

Andrew Warner (Columbia College)

In the first game of a doubleheader, the Cardinals lost to the Mets 6-2.  The Cardinals scored both their runs in the first inning.  Diomedes Del Rio led off with a double, then advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Josh Shaw hit a sac fly that scored Del Rio.  Andrew Warner followed with a solo home run.

Wilfredo Pereira was the starter and the losing pitcher.  Pereira pitched five innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits.   Chris Rivera pitched the final two innings and surrendered an additional run.

William Jimenez was caught stealing for the second time in three attempts.  Kevin Vargas and Mateo Gil made throwing errors. Pereira and catcher Brandon Purcell both made errors on pickoff attempts.  Jimenez had an outfield assist.


GCL Cardinals 7, GCL Mets 2 (seven innings, Game 2 DH)

Zach Gahagan (North Carolina)

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cardinals beat the Mets 7-2.  Francisco Justo pitched to the first batter in the game, who flied out.  Justo was then replaced by Chris Hunt, who pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up one run on three hits.  Hunt was the winning pitcher.  Wilberto Rivera started the fifth and gave up one run, then was replaced with two outs by Ty Cohen, who got the final out of the inning.  Cohen went on to pitch a scoreless sixth.  Edgar Escobar pitched a scoreless seventh.

The Cardinals scored all seven of their runs in the first two innings of the game.  In the first inning Zach Gahagan hit a three run home run.  In the second, Joe Freiday scored on a Cole Kreuter sac fly, then Brandon Benson hit a two run home run, and Josh Shaw followed with a solo home run.

The Cardinals are 12-5 on the season and are in first place in the GCL East.

DSL Cardinals Blue 16, DSL Phillies Red 1

The Cardinals Blue put a whooping on the Phillies Red on Saturday.  The scoring began in the second inning with a run on a wild pitch and then a Pablo Gomez double to score Freddy De Jesus.  A six run inning in the fourth started with a Gomez RBI two run triple, followed by a Jose Zapata RBI single, a Jean Selmo two run double, and a fielding error run on a ball in play by De Jesus.  In the sixth, Selmo single followed by De Jesus double and then a Leudy Pena ground out put one more run on the board.  The seventh inning brought another crooked number, seven runs in all.  They came on a Malcom Nunez single, a two run double by De Jesus, a wild pitch, a two run single by Zapata and a Darlin Moquete single.  Selmo went 4-for-5 with two RBI and four runs scored.  Nunez and Zapata were both 2-for-4.  Gomez was 3-for-4 and De Jesus was 3-for-6.

The Blue pitching staff kept the Phillies Red off the board until the ninth inning.  It started with five scoreless innings from Hector Soto, who earned his fourth win.  Derek Diaz, Saniel Santana, and Angel Ortega each pitched a scoreless inning. It was Leonardo Taveras in the ninth who gave up the only Phillies run.

Soler stole a base and was also caught stealing.  It was Soler’s fourth stolen base and fifth caught stealing.  De Jesus made two fielding errors and Gomez made one fielding error.  Soto picked a runner off first base.

The Cardinals Blue are 21-10 on the season and are tied for first place in the DSL South.

DSL Cardinals Red 9 at DSL Phillies White 4

The Cardinals Red defeated the Phillies White on Saturday.  Miguel Maiz was the starting hurler for the Red team and he pitched three innings in which he gave up one run on two hits.  Maiz was replaced by Augusto Calderon, who also surrendered a run and pitched one inning of relief.  The next pitcher, and the winning pitcher, was Dionys Rodriguez, who pitched two scoreless innings for the Red team.  Roy Garcia took the mound next and he allowed two unearned runs in two innings pitched.  Nelson Prada was the final pitcher and he pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Red offense scored nine runs on 11 hits.  In the first inning Cristhian Longa hit a double to center field that plated Franklin Soto, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.  Longa scored when Francisco Hernandez hit a sac fly to left field.  Three runs were put on the board in the third inning, when Joerlin De Los Santos led off with a single and Soto doubled him home.   Luis Montano tripled and Soto came home, then Montano scored on an Alexander Samuel single.  Hernandez hit a solo home run in the fifth.   In the sixth, back to back wild pitches with Soto at the plate scored two.  Soto scored the final run in the eighth on a Montano single.  Hernandez and Samuel were both 2-for-4.  Soto and Montano were both 2-for-3.

De Los Santos stole his 16th base in 18 attempts.  Soto stole two bases in the game for his 10th and 11th stolen bases in 17 attempts.  Pitcher Garcia made an error on a pickoff throw.

The Cardinals Red are 17-14 on the season and are in third place in the DSL San Pedro Division.
