Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 31, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-4 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, RH Darlin Saladin, threw seven one-run innings with nine strikeouts in Peoria’s win. Other standouts include Matt Koperniak, Chase Davis and Jason Savacool.

Memphis 6 at Durham 11

The Triple-A Redbirds were pounded by the Bulls by an 11-6 score on Tuesday. Ian Bedell couldn’t control Durham as they lit him up for 10 runs on nine hits.  The right hander struck out four and walked two in five innings.

Ryan Shreve finished the game for Bedell. Shreve surrendered one run in three innings.

The Bulls got on the board early with a vengeance and never looked back. It began with a four-run first inning. Memphis clawed back three runs in the top of the second. Luken Baker walked and Thomas Saggese singled Baker to third. Matt Koperniak then clobbered a three-run home run.

Durham didn’t blink, scoring four more runs in the bottom of the second to pull ahead 8-3. Memphis continued to fight with two runs in the top of the third. César Prieto led off with a walk. Saggese hit a two bagger. Koperniak drove in both runners on a double. The Durham lead shrunk to 8-5.

The Bulls added a ninth run in the bottom of the third to lead 9-5. Durham punched up the lead with a run in the fifth.

The Redbirds put up one more run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Victor Scott to shrink the lead to 10-6.

The Bulls matched Memphis with a run in the home half of the sixth.

Neither team scored in the final innings.

The Redbirds scored six runs on 10 hits. Koperniak was 2-for-4 with five RBI. Saggese was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Jordan Walker was 2-for-5.

Koperniak slightly marred his five RBI outing by getting caught stealing. José Fermín made a fielding error.

Memphis is 49-53 on the season, 11-17 in the second half. They are ninth place in the International League West Division.

Wednesday’s game:  at Durham, RH Victor Santos (3-7, 6.67) vs.  TBD 5:35 CT.

Springfield 1 at Tulsa 8

The Double-A Cardinals took a pounding at the hands of the Drillers by an 8-1 score on Tuesday. Edwin Nuñez was victimized for six runs, three earned, in 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander allowed four hits, fanned three and walked four to get his seventh loss of the season.

Benito Garcia relieved Nuñez and surrendered two runs in 2 1/3 innings. Leonardo Taveras came out unscathed in two scoreless innings.

The Drillers went ahead 2-0 in the first inning. They added on over the next five innings with one run in the third, three in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth for an 8-0 lead.

Springfield scored its lone run in the seventh on a long ball from Jimmy Crooks.

The team was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left six runners stranded. There was no Cardinal with more than one hit, which totaled just four.

Two errors were made on defense, one a throwing error by Noah Mendlinger and the second a fielding miscue by Nathan Church. Crooks had a passed ball.

Springfield is 54-43 on the season, 17-11 in the second half. They remain in first place in the Texas League North.

Peoria 5, Quad Cities 3

The High-A Chiefs defeated the River Bandits by a 5-3 score at Dozer Park on Tuesday night. Darlin Saladin made the start and pitched well. The right-hander threw seven one-run innings on six hits, nine strikeouts and two walks to earn his fourth win.

Tyler Bradt relieved Saladin and hurled a scoreless frame. Newcomer Hunter Hayes pitched the ninth and allowed two runs.

Quad Cities took the initial lead 1-0 in the third, but it didn’t last as Peoria put two runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. Darlin Moquete led off with a double. Brody Moore’s base hit moved Moquete to third. A sac fly by Leonardo Bernal plated Moquete. Following a hit-by-pitch of Johnfrank Salazar, another new Chief, Trey Paige, drove in Moore with a single.

The Chiefs added to their lead with a three-run fourth inning. Tre Richardson singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Moquete walked. Moore thumped a base hit. In his first game with the team, Chase Davis brought two runs home on a single. Moore came in on a single by Salazar.

The score remained 5-1 until the River Bandits made it closer with a two-run top of the ninth.

The Chiefs knocked nine hits for five runs. Moore went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Moquete was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Davis had two RBI.

Moore stole his 16th base of the season. Bernal took his ninth bag. Saladin picked a runner off first base. Bernal did the same with a runner on second.

Peoria is 42-54 on the season, 16-15 in the second half. They have climbed to third place in the Midwest League West, 4.5 games back of Wisconsin.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Quad Cities, Brycen Mautz LHP (1-11, 5.78) vs. Ryan Ramsey LHP (1-3, 2.93) 12:05 CT.

Palm Beach 1, Bradenton 3 (10 innings)

The Low-A Cardinals fell to the Marauders by the score of 3-1 in 10 innings on Tuesday at Roger Dean Stadium.  Jason Savacool pitched a quality start of six scoreless innings with four hits, six strikeouts and two walks.

Luis Gastelum blew his second save with one run allowed in three innings of relief. Angel Cuenca pitched the 10th and surrendered two runs, one earned, to take the loss.

Palm Beach got on the board with a run in the third to take the lead. Sammy Hernandez punched an infield single to first base and advanced to second on a passed ball. Jose Suarez thumped a ground rule double to bring Hernandez home.

The 1-0 lead remained until the ninth, when Bradenton tied the game and sent it into extra innings.

The Marauders pushed across two runs in the 10th to lead 3-1. The Beach Birds did not answer in the bottom of the inning.

The Cardinals produced one run on five hits. Suarez’ double was the only extra base hit. Palm Beach left 14 men on base for a 1-for-15 tally with runners in scoring position.

Batting third in his first professional game, 2024 first rounder J.J. Wetherholt went 1-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout.

Brayden Jobert stole his 13th base of the season. Savacool picked a runner off first base.

Palm Beach is 56-39 on the season, 19-10 in the second half. They remain in first place in the FSL East by three games over Daytona.

DSL Cardinals 3 at DSL Mariners 4

The Dominican Cardinals were defeated by the Mariners by a 4-3 score on Tuesday.  Right hander Andrew Bolivar took the mound for the Cardinals and threw four one-run innings with four hits allowed, eight punchouts and one walk.

Bolivar was relieved by Brailyn Paulino, who pitched a scoreless fifth. Jarol Baez tossed a scoreless sixth inning. In the seventh, Xavier Cruz surrendered a run, and Giovanni Vargas allowed two runs in the eighth. Guanchi Martinez got the final out of the game. Vargas took the loss.

The Mariners scored early, going up 1-0 in the second inning.  The Cardinals got it going in the sixth via a two run long ball from Facundo Velasquez.

The Cardinals’ lead went to 3-1 in the top of the seventh. The second batter of the inning, Paulo Asprilla, thumped a single to center field. Andru Arthur walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Asprilla was gunned down at home when Yairo Padilla grounded into a fielder’s choice. After Velasquez was plunked to load the bases, Rainiel Rodriguez took a free pass that scored Arthur.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Mariners put up one run to cut the lead to 3-2. They added two runs in the eighth to take a 4-3 lead.

The Cardinals went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The three runs scored on only five hits. Asprilla was 2-for-3.

Christian Saez swiped his second base of the season. Padilla was caught stealing. Pitcher Cruz made a throwing error.

The Cardinals are 19-19 on the season. They are in fifth place in the DSL Central Division.
