Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 3, 2025

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-1 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation Players of the Day are the entire Peoria offense, who combined for a Dozer Park record 21 runs on 21 hits. Each of the starting nine had multiple hits as Josh Kross plated six. Other standouts include Pete Hansen and Ramon Mendoza.

Memphis 1 at Nashville 2

The Triple-A Redbirds fell to the Sounds in Nashville by a 2-1 score on Wednesday.

Starter Curtis Taylor pitched five innings, gave up one run on five hits, fanned six and walked two.

Gordon Graceffo relieved Taylor and surrendered one run in three innings. The right-hander took the loss.

Nashville went up 1-0 in the third inning but Memphis tied the game in the fifth. César Prieto doubled. Brody Moore singled. Prieto scored on a sac fly by Mike Antico.

The Sounds broke the tie in the eighth to lead 2-1.

Memphis scored one run on seven hits. Prieto was 2-for-4. Moore was 2-for-3.

On the bases, Bryan Torres stole his 16th base of the season. On defense, Prieto made a fielding error.

Memphis is 44-37 overall, 3-5 in the second half. They are in a five way tie with Iowa, Nashville, Omaha, and Toledo for last place in the IL West.

Thursday’s game: at Nashville, Zach Plesac RHP (0-4, 10.13) vs. TBD (NSH) 6:00 CT.

Springfield 7, NW Arkansas 3

The Double-A Cardinals defeated the Naturals by the score of 7-3 at Hammons Field on Wednesday.

Starter Pete Hansen pitched six innings, gave up three runs on seven hits, fanned four and walked two to earn his fifth win.

Out of the pen, Andrew Marrero, Luis Gastelum and Osvaldo Berrios each tossed a scoreless inning.

Springfield put up six runs in the first inning. Noah Mendlinger and JJ Wetherholt singled. Leonardo Bernal walked. Joshua Baez reached on an error and Mendlinger scored. Jeremy Rivas walked and Wetherholt came home. Ramon Mendoza plated Bernal and Baez on a single. Rivas came home on a sac fly by Carlos Linarez. Darlin Moquete walked. Runners advanced on a wild pitch. Mendlinger was hit by a pitch. Wetherholt walked to score Mendoza.

NW Arkansas scored two runs in the second and added a run in the sixth to shrink the lead to 6-3.

The Cardinals made it 7-3 in the eighth. Mendlinger doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Cardinals scored seven runs on seven hits. Mendoza was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Mendlinger was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

On the bases, Moquete was caught stealing. On defense, Mendoza made a throwing error.

Springfield is 47-30 overall, 4-4 in the second half and is one game back of a three-way tie between Arkansas, Tulsa, and Wichita.

Thursday’s game: vs. NW Arkansas, Tink Hence RHP (0-0, 5.87) vs. Steven Zobac RHP (0-1, 7.85) 6:05 CT.

Peoria 21, South Bend 2

The High-A Chiefs massacred the Cubs by a 21-2 score on Wednesday as Peoria set the new Dozer Park single-game scoring record.

Starter Jason Savacool pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up two runs on five hits, struck out three and walked three.

Jawilme Ramirez relieved Savacool and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the win. Angel Gonzalez hurled a scoreless seventh. Dionys Rodriguez tossed the final two scoreless innings.

South Bend went up 1-0 in the first inning. Peoria tied the game in the second. Ian Petrutz was hit by a pitch. Won-Bin Cho doubled to score Petrutz.

The Cubs regained the lead 2-1 in the top of the third. The Chiefs put up four runs in the home third to go ahead 5-2. Travis Honeyman doubled. Zach Levenson and Ryan Campos walked. Josh Kross hit a grand slam.

Peoria added five runs in the fourth to increase the lead to 10-2. Honeyman reached on an error. Levenson singled. Campos plated Honeyman on a double. Kross drove in Levenson on a single. Campos came home on a single by Miquel Villarroel. Tre Richardson doubled to score Kross and Villarroel.

In the fifth, the Chiefs poured it on with another five runs to widen the lead to 15-2. Cho and Jon Jon Gazdar walked. Honeyman singled to plate Cho. Gazdar scored on a fielder’s choice by Levenson. Honeyman and Levenson came home on a double by Campos. Kross drove in Campos on a single.

Peoria increased the lead to 16-2 in the sixth. Cho and Gazdar singled. Honeyman reached on an error and Cho scored.

In the seventh, the Chiefs enjoyed a third five-run inning to swell the lead to 21-2. Villarroel doubled. Petrutz singled. Richardson singled and Villarroel came home. Gazdar was hit by a pitch. Honeyman plated Petrutz and Richardson on a double. Gazdar scored on a Levenson single. Chase Adkison drove in Honeyman on a single.

The offense scored 21 runs on 21 hits as every player in the starting lineup had multiple hits.

Kross was 3-for-5 with six RBI and two runs scored. Honeyman was 3-for-6 with three RBI and four runs scored. Campos was 2-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Levenson was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Richardson was 2-for-6 with three RBI. Villarroel was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cho was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Petrutz and Gazdar were both 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

On the bases, Villarroel was caught stealing. On defense, Gazdar made a throwing error.                                                                                                    

Peoria is 32-44 overall, 6-5 in the second half, and is tied with Beloit for second place in the Midwest League West, one game back of Quad Cities.

Thursday’s game: vs. South Bend, Chen-Wei Lin RHP (0-2, 4.94) vs. TBD (SB) 5:45 CT.

Palm Beach vs. Jupiter (postponed)

The Palm Beach Cardinals vs. Jupiter Hammerheads game at Roger Dean Stadium was postponed due unplayable field conditions. A makeup doubleheader will be played later at a date to be determined.

Palm Beach is 35-40 overall, 3-7 in the second half, and is in last place in the FSL East, four games back of St. Lucie.

Thursday’s game: vs. Jupiter, TBD vs. TBD 5:00 CT.

FCL Cardinals at FCL Marlins (postponed)

The Florida Complex League game with the Cardinals visiting the Marlins on Wednesday afternoon was postponed due to rain in the area.

The Cardinals are 17-22 on the season and are in fourth place in the Florida Complex League East, 7.5 games back of the FCL Astros.

DSL Cardinals – Off day

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals were off Wednesday.    The Cards are 13-9 on the season, tied with the Marlins for first place in the Southeast Division.
