Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 25, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-3 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach RH Jose Davila, pitched six scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts. Other standouts include Michael McGreevy, Nathan Church and Arfeni Batista.

Memphis 1 at Columbus 2

The Triple-A Redbirds were edged by the Clippers in a 2-1 road loss on Wednesday afternoon Starter Michael McGreevy pitched six scoreless innings, allowed two hits, struck out five and walked three.

Connor Thomas relieved McGreevy and surrendered one run in the seventh. Kyle Leahy yielded one run in the eighth and took the loss.

Memphis went up 1-0 in the third inning. Nick Raposo singled. Victor Scott II grounded into a force out as Raposo was out at second. Jordan Walker doubled. Luken Baker drew a walk to load the bases. Thomas Saggese walked to plate Scott.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the eighth when Columbus put two runs on the board. Memphis could not answer in the ninth.

The Redbirds scored one run on seven hits. Walker was 2-for-4. Baker was 2-for-3.

On the bases, Arquímedes Gamboa and José Fermín were both caught stealing.

Memphis is 48-50 on the season, 10-12 in the second half.

Thursday’s game:  at Columbus, Ian Bedell RHP (2-1, 2.37) vs. Doug Nikhazy LHP (2-0, 0.86) 6:05 CT

Springfield 4, Corpus Christi 10

The Double-A Cardinals were walloped by the Hooks in a 10-4 blowout loss at Hammons Field on Wednesday. Starter Edwin Nuñez pitched four innings, gave up five runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked one. Nuñez fell to 0-6, still looking for his first win after 15 starts in 2024.

Wilfredo Pereira relieved Nuñez and surrendered five runs in 2 2/3 innings. Leonardo Taveras tossed the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Corpus Christi went up 2-0 in the first inning and added three runs in the third to lead 5-0.

Springfield got on the board in the fourth on a two-run home run by Nathan Church.

The Hooks made it 6-2 in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals answered with one run in the home half of the inning on a solo home run by R.J. Yeager.

Corpus Christi plated four runs in the seventh to widen the lead to 10-3. Springfield added a final run in the eighth. St. Louis rehabber Tommy Edman drew a walk. Matt Lloyd pinch ran. Wade Stauss doubled, moving Lloyd to third. Lloyd came home on a ground out by Church.

Springfield scored four runs on four hits. No Cardinal had multiple hits. Church had three RBI. Batting second as the designated hitter, Edman went 0-for-2 with two walks.

On defense, Aaron McKeithan made a throwing error.

Springfield is 51-41 on the season, 14-9 in the second half.

Thursday’s game:  vs. Corpus Christi, Quinn Mathews LHP (0-1, 4.96) vs. Tyler Guilfoil RHP (4-9, 4.14) 7:05 CT.

Peoria 2 at South Bend 5

The High-A Chiefs fell to the Cubs in South Bend by a 5-2 score on Wednesday, taking their fifth consecutive defeat. Starter Darlin Saladin pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up four runs on six hits, struck out four and walked two. Saladin took the loss.

Zane Mills relieved Saladin and surrendered one run in 1 2/3 innings. Gustavo Rodriguez tossed a scoreless eighth.

The Chiefs took the early lead in the second inning. Johnfrank Salazar led off with a double. Miguel Villarroel singled. Villaroel was picked off and caught stealing second and Salazar scored on the rundown.

The Cubs tied the game in the fourth. Peoria retook the lead 2-1 in the top of the sixth. Tre Richardson singled, then stole second and third base. Salazar plated Richardson on a sac fly.

South Bend answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 4-2. They added a fifth run in the seventh.

Peoria scored two runs on five hits. No Chief player had multiple hits. The offense was 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.

On the bases, Richardson stole two bases. Villarroel swiped his eighth bag. He was also picked off and caught stealing.

Peoria is 38-53 on the season, 12-14 in the second half.

Thursday’s game:  at South Bend, Brycen Mautz LHP (0-11, 6.08) vs. Will Sanders RHP (1-5, 4.65) 6:05 CT.

Palm Beach 5 at St. Lucie Mets 3 (10 innings)

The Low-A Cardinals defeated the Mets by a 5-3 score at Port St. Lucie on Wednesday afternoon. Starter Jose Davila pitched six scoreless innings, allowed three hits, struck out 11 and walked two.

Luis Gastelum relieved Davila and surrendered three runs in two innings. Angel Cuenca threw a scoreless ninth to earn the win. Zack Showalter tossed a scoreless 10th for his eighth save in 10 opportunities.

The Beach Birds took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Lizandro Espinoza singled. Trey Paige drove in Espinoza on a triple. Paige scored on a ground out by Chase Davis.

The Mets came back to tie the game against Gastelum in the seventh. Palm Beach answered with one run in the top of the eighth to retake the lead 3-2. Jose Cordoba walked, went to second on a ground out by Davis and advanced to third on a passed ball. Cordoba came home on a ground out Kade Kretzschmar.

St. Lucie tied the game again with one run in the home eighth. Neither team scored in the ninth.

The game went into the 10th and the Cardinals put up two small ball runs to gain the lead 5-3. Espinoza began the inning on second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Paige drew a walk. Davis grounded into a force as Paige was out at second as Espinoza scored. Kretzschmar walked. Davis and Kretzschmar advanced on a passed ball. Ross Friedrick was hit by a pitch and Davis scored.

Palm Beach scored five runs despite just four hits. No Cardinal had multiples. Davis had two RBI.

On defense, Davila made a throwing error. Friedrick had a fielding miscue.

Palm Beach is 53-37 on the season, 16-8 in the second half.

Thursday’s game:  at St. Lucie, TBD vs. TBD 5:10 CT.

FCL Cardinals 7, FCL Marlins 1 (seven innings)

The rookie Cardinals beat the first-place Marlins by a 7-1 score on Wednesday. Starter Nelfy Ynfante pitched four innings, gave up one run on three hits, struck out four and walked two.

Yordy Herrera relieved Ynfante and threw two scoreless innings for his sixth win of the season. Juan Severino tossed a scoreless seventh.

The Cardinals took the lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Yancel Guerrero. The Marlins scored their only run in the third.

The Cardinals added three runs in the fifth to lead 5-1. Miguel Vargas doubled. Yaisel Ramos singled. Arfeni Batista plated Vargas on a single. Jonathan Mejia drove in Ramos on a single. Batista scored on a wild pitch.

The Cardinals made it 7-1 in the sixth on a two-run home run by Batista.

The offense scored seven runs on seven hits. Batista was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Guerrero had two RBI.

On the bases, Luis Pino was caught stealing.

The Cardinals are 20-32, in last place in the FCL East and are eliminated from the playoffs. Their season ends on Thursday.

The 16-17 Dominican Summer League Cardinals are in fifth place in the eight-team Central Division. The Cards are nine games behind first-place Arizona Red.
