Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 18, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 0-3 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, DSL 3B Daniel Rojas, was 3-for-3 including a double and home run with two RBI and two runs scored. Other standouts include Arfeni Batista, Nelfy Ynfante and Yairo Padilla.

FCL Cardinals 3 at FCL Nationals 4

The Florida Complex Cardinals were edged by the Nationals by a 4-3 score in West Palm Beach on Wednesday. Starter Nelfy Ynfante pitched five innings, gave up one run on four hits, struck out four and walked one.

Yordy Herrera relieved Ynfante and surrendered three runs, two earned, in 2 2/3 innings. Antoni Cuello got the final out of the eighth.

The Nationals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and added two runs in the seventh.

With some small ball, the Cardinals tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the eighth. Yancel Guerrero singled and advanced to third on a passed ball. Luis Piño drove in Guerrero on a ground out. Felix Taveras singled. Romtres Cabrera singled. Taveras advanced to third on an error. Arfeni Batista plated Taveras on a single. Cabrera advanced to third on a wild pitch. Heriberto Caraballo was hit by a pitch. Yaisel Ramos walked to score Cabrera.

The Nationals put up one run in the home half of the eighth to retake the lead 4-3. The Cardinals failed to answer in the ninth.

The Cardinals scored three runs on eight hits. Batista was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cabrera was 2-for-4.

On the bases, Jonathan Mejia stole his 15th base of the season. Batista swiped his third bag.  On defense, Mejia made a fielding error.

The Cardinals are 18-32 on the season and in last place in the FCL East. The Cardinals have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Thursday’s game:  Off

DSL Cardinals 8 at DSL Blue Jays 9 (seven innings, Game 1)

The Dominican Cardinals were topped by the Blue Jays in the first game of a twin bill on Wednesday. This was the makeup of a July 2 postponed contest.

Starter Brailyn Paulino was wild. The right-hander pitched 1 2/3 innings, gave up two runs on one hit, struck out three but walked seven. Jarol Baez relieved Paulino and surrendered three runs, one earned in two innings. Reiner Lopez yielded one run in 1 2/3 innings. Justin Hernandez allowed three runs in the final 1 1/3 innings and took the loss.

The Blue Jays went up 1-0 in the first inning and 2-0 in the second. The Cardinals cut the lead to 2-1 in the third on a solo home run by Daniel Rojas.

The Blue Jays scored three runs in the fourth to increase the lead to 5-1. The Cardinals answered with four in the fifth to tie the game. Yaxson Lucena singled. Rojas doubled. Andru Arthur drew a walk. Yairo Padilla doubled to clear the bases. Padilla came home on a sac fly by Facundo Velasquez.

The Cardinals took a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth. Juan Pablo Cabrera singled. Lucena singled. Rojas drove in Cabrera on a single.

The Blue Jays regained the lead with two runs in the home sixth. The Cardinals took the lead back again in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run by Bracewell Taveras. The Cardinals led 8-7.

The Blue Jays responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win in a walk off, 9-8.

The Cardinals scored eight runs on nine hits. Rojas was 3-for-3 with a double and home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Lucena was 2-for-3. Padilla and Taveras each had two RBI.

On defense, Rojas made a throwing error. Baez had a fielding miscue. Paulino made an error on a pickoff.

DSL Cardinals 6, DSL Blue Jays 8 (seven innings, Game 2)

The Cardinals fell to the Blue Jays in the second game of the twin bill on Wednesday. Starter Andrew Bolivar pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up two runs on two hits, struck out five and walked two.

Bernard Mack relieved Bolivar and surrendered one run in 1 2/3 innings. Kener Perez yielded five runs in the final three innings and took the loss.

The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. The Cardinals answered with two runs in the home half of the third to tie the score. Andru Arthur singled and later came home on a sac fly by Facundo Velasquez. Rainiel Rodriguez thumped a solo home run.

The Blue Jays came back in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. The Cardinals tied the game again in the home fourth. Yoerny Junco reached on a passed ball third strike and stole second base. Brayan Amoroso singled to plate Junco.

The Blue Jays surged ahead with a four-run sixth inning. They added a run in the top of the seventh to lead 8-3.

The Cardinals rallied in the home seventh for three runs to shrink the final score to 8-6. Cristofer Lebron singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Arthur drove in Lebron on a single. Yairo Padilla plated Arthur on a single. Padilla later scored on a single by Christian Saez.

The Cardinals scored six runs on eight hits. Padilla was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Arthur was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

On the bases, Velasquez stole his fourth base of the season. Junco swiped his third bag. Padilla was caught stealing.

On defense, Junco made a fielding error.

The Cardinals are 15-15 on the season.

Thursday’s game:  at DSL Giants Black, RH Branneli Franco (0-3, 8.53) vs. TBD 10:00 am CT.
