The St. Louis Cardinals system lost all four games completed on a rain-interrupted Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, left fielder Nick Plummer, went 3-for-4 including a double, home run, and two runs scored plus tied a team record in Springfield’s loss to Tulsa.

Results for games played on Friday, August 6, 2021.

Memphis 3 at Durham 16 (seven innings)

The Redbirds were shellacked by the Durham Bulls in a seven-inning game on Friday night that started late and was completed early due to persistent rain.

Memphis fell behind quickly, but it was not a deficit that couldn’t be overcome until the sixth inning when the real trouncing began.  Johan Oviedo started on the mound for Memphis and the right hander pitched five innings, yielding five runs, four earned, on three hits, punched out six and walked one.

The first of three relievers in the sixth was Garrett Williams, who surrendered five runs while recording only one out.  Tyler Webb was up next, and he was a carbon copy of Williams – five runs allowed, only one out recorded thanks to four free passes.  Connor Jones finally stopped the mauling, only yielding one run and getting the final out of the inning.

Overall, Redbirds pitching yielded just seven hits, but ruined their evening by walking 12 Bulls.

The Redbirds scored in only one inning – the sixth, a half inning before the carnage began.  Evan Mendoza led off with a single, followed by a double by Rayder Ascanio.  Two outs later, Nolan Gorman doubled and plated both Mendoza and Ascanio.  Juan Yepez then doubled to score Gorman.

The offense managed just six hits and drew no walks. No Redbird had more than one hit.  Gorman had two RBI.

In the field, Dennis Ortega had a passed ball.

Memphis is 40-42 and sits in fifth place in the Triple-A East Southeast Division, 13.5 games back of first place Durham.

Springfield 5, Tulsa 6

The Cardinals were edged by the Tulsa Drillers in a comeback loss at Hammons Field on Friday night.  A ninth inning rally by Tulsa put them on top and the Cardinals could not answer.

Tulsa scored first with one run in the first inning.  Springfield responded with two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead.  Nick Plummer singled and cleanup hitter Ivan Herrera drove him home on a two-run home run to left center field.

The Drillers regained the lead with two in the fourth.  Two innings later the Cardinals tallied three more runs on a solo home run by Plummer, an RBI double by Justin Toerner, and an RBI single by Julio Rodriguez.

Tulsa took the lead again with a three-run home run in the ninth inning to give them the 6-5 edge that the Cardinals couldn’t overcome.

Plummer, who tied the team record by reaching base in his 32nd consecutive game, was 3-for-4 including a triple, home run and two runs scored.  Brendan Donovan and Rodriguez were both 2-for-4.  Herrera had two RBI.

Cardinals hitters struck out 10 times and like Memphis, did not take a walk all evening.

St. Louis ace Jack Flaherty, making his third rehab start, pitched four innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits.  The right hander struck out three.  Regular starter Dalton Roach relieved Flaherty. He threw 4 2/3 innings and surrendered three runs to take his eighth loss of the season.  Jacob Bosiokovic got the final out of the ninth.

In the field, Herrera had a passed ball and was called for catcher interference.

Springfield is 31-51 and is in last place in the Double-A Central North Division, 16 games back of first place Wichita.
