Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 3, 2025

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league system was 2-4 on Saturday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield 3B Dakota Harris, slugged a home run and drove in three. Other standouts include César Prieto, Brycen Mautz, Chase Davis, Braden Davis and Angel Cuenca.

Memphis Redbirds 8 at Norfolk Tides 9 (10 innings)

The Triple-A Memphis Redbirds lost a tight contest to the Norfolk Tides on the road in extra innings.

Max Rajcic made his third start for Memphis. The right-hander pitched 3 ⅔ innings and allowed three runs on three hits, seven walks, and no strikeouts.

Left-hander Oddanier Mosqueda fanned two across 1 ⅓ innings in relief. Skylar Hales, acquired in the Phil Maton trade, had a rough system debut, yielding three runs in one inning. Zack Weiss followed with two shutout frames with four strikeouts. Lefty Nick Raquet surrendered three runs, two earned, across 1 ⅔ innings and took the loss.

Memphis struck first with a two-run first inning. Nathan Church and César Prieto began the game with back-to-back singles. Luken Baker scorched a double to score Church and Prieto for a 2-0 Redbirds lead.

Norfolk trimmed the lead in half with a run in the second inning.

Memphis responded with a pair of runs in the third. Jimmy Crooks singled and Blaze Jordan was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Matt Koperniak doubled home Crooks for a 3-1 Memphis lead.

Norfolk moved within two in the home third.

The Redbirds took the run back in the fourth. Church legged out an infield single and stole second base. Baker and Crooks took back-to-back walks to load the bases. Jordan grounded into a force out, with Church home for a 5-1 lead. It was Jordan’s first RBI in the St. Louis Cardinals’ system.

The Tides plated a run in the fourth and three in the sixth to jump in front 6-5.

The Redbirds tied the game at six in the eighth. Mike Antico started the inning with a bunt single, and advanced to second base on a Church groundout. Prieto lined a single to put runners on the corners. Antico touched home plate on a Baker groundout.

The score remained deadlocked at six to force extra innings. The Redbirds regained the lead in the top of the 10th. Torres began the inning at second and advanced to third with one out via a wild pitch. With Prieto batting, Torres was awarded home plate on a balk to move the Redbirds ahead 7-6. Prieto blasted a solo home run to add an insurance run for an 8-6 Redbirds lead.

Norfolk rallied for three runs against Raquet in the home 10th to walk-off the win.

The Redbirds scored eight runs on 15 hits. Prieto was 3-for-5, including a walk, two runs scored, and a solo home run. Koperniak went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Baker walked, doubled, and tallied three RBI. Jordan, acquired from Boston for Steven Matz, scored a run and drove in a run in his organizational debut. Church singled twice and scored twice.

On the bases, Antico and Michael Siani each stole their 16th bag of the season. Church swiped his eighth at the Triple-A level.

On defense, pitcher Rajcic picked a runner off second base to highlight an error-free night.

Memphis is 57-48 overall, and 16-16 in the second half. They will look to take Sunday’s series finale and win five of six overall in the series.

Springfield Cardinals 6, Arkansas Travelers 3

The Double-A Springfield Cardinals edged the Arkansas Travelers at Hammons Field on Saturday.

Brycen Mautz started his 18th game for Springfield. The left-hander pitched 5 ⅔ innings and yielded one unearned run on six hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. Mautz earned his fourth win of the season.

Ricardo Velez allowed one run across 1 ⅓ innings in relief. In his one-inning Double-A debut, Tyler Bradt surrendered a run. Luis Gastelum fanned two in a scoreless ninth inning to collect his fifth save of 2025.

Arkansas took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Springfield tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Chase Davis lined a lead-off single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Leonardo Bernal walked. In his return from the injured list, Miguel Ugueto singled to bring Davis home.

The Cardinals took the lead with a run in the third. Dakota Harris launched his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot and his third long ball in the series, to move the Cardinals ahead 2-1.

Springfield extended the lead with a two-run fourth inning. Brody Moore lined a lead-off single. Darlin Moquete singled. Harris hit a sharp single to bring Moore and Moquete to the plate for a 4-1 Cardinals lead.

The Cardinals scored another pair of runs in the sixth. Moquete walked and stole second base. Davis crushed his eighth home run of 2025, a two-run blast, to stretch the Springfield lead to 6-2.

Springfield held off a late Arkansas rally in the victory.

The Cardinals scored six runs on 10 hits. Harris was 2-for-4, including a solo home run and three RBI. Davis was 2-for-4, including a two-run home run. Ugueto singled and drove in a run. Moore singled twice and scored a run. Trey Paige tripled.

On the basepaths, Noah Mendlinger stole his 10th bag. Moquete snagged his 17th.

Defensively, catcher Wade Stauss was tagged with a passed ball in an errorless night for the Cardinals.

Springfield is 63-38 overall, and 20-12 in the second half. They hold a two-game lead in the Texas League North Division. The Cardinals will look to extend their division lead over Arkansas and clinch the series victory on Sunday.

Sunday’s game: vs. Arkansas, RHP Cade Winquest (0-0, 0.90) vs. RHP Michael Morales (2-4, 4.38). 1:05 PM CT.

Peoria Chiefs 4 at Beloit Sky Carp 3 (10 innings)

The High-A Peoria Chiefs won in extra innings over the Sky Carp in Beloit on Saturday.

Braden Davis made his third start for the Chiefs. The left-hander fired five scoreless innings on one hit, two walks, and five strikeouts. Davis sports a pristine 1.20 ERA through his first three High-A starts.

Randel Clemente yielded two runs across 1 ⅓ innings in relief. Jawilme Ramirez allowed a run over 1 ⅔ innings and was tagged with a blown save. Tanner Jacobson tossed scoreless ninth and 10th innings to earn his sixth win of the season.

The Chiefs scored the first two runs in the first inning. Graysen Tarlow was hit by a pitch and scored on a Ryan Campos double.

Chase Adkison followed with a single to bring Campos home.

Beloit plated three runs in the seventh to grab a 3-2 lead.

Down to their final three outs, Peoria rallied to tie. Tre Richardson hit a one-out double. Ian Petrutz reached on a fielding error, with Richardson home.

Peoria held Beloit scoreless in the ninth to force extra innings.

The Chiefs regained the lead in the top of the 10th. Travis Honeyman singled to score ghost runner Tarlow.

The Chiefs stranded the Sky Carp’s tying run at third base in the bottom of the 10th to secure the win.

The Chiefs scored four runs on 10 hits. Campos walked, doubled, scored a run, and drove in a run. Honeyman hit the game-winning RBI-single. Adkison singled and drove in a run. Tarlow hit a single and scored twice. Richardson walked, doubled, and scored a run. Anyelo Encarnacion tallied three singles, the only Chief with multiple hits. Eight of the nine Peoria batters recorded a hit.

On the basepaths, Encarnacion swiped his first base with Peoria this season. Tarlow was picked off first base.

On defense, left fielder Honeyman made a sparkling game-saving catch in the bottom of the ninth as the exclamation point on an errorless night.

Peoria is 40-60 overall, and 14-21 on the season. They will look to take the series finale on Sunday.

Sunday’s game: at Beloit, RHP Nate Dohm – Organizational debut (3-5, 2.87) vs. RHP Brandon White (5-3, 4.83) 1:05 PM CT.

Palm Beach Cardinals 1, Jupiter Hammerheads 10 (7 innings, game one)

The Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals were thumped by the Jupiter Hammerheads in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

Ian Bedell started for Palm Beach in a rehab outing, as he works to rejoin the Memphis Redbirds. The right-hander threw 2 ⅔ innings and allowed five runs on four hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. Bedell took the loss.

Angel Cuenca fired 3 ⅓ shutout frames with a pair of strikeouts in relief. Zeke Wood retired just one batter and surrendered five runs. Hunter Kublick recorded the final two outs of the seventh inning.

Jupiter took a 5-0 lead after three innings.

Palm Beach entered the run column in the sixth. Luis Pino walked. Jose Cordoba reached on a fielder’s choice, with Pino to third base on the play via a fielding error. Pino crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly from Sammy Hernandez. Johnfrank Salazar singled and Bryce Madron walked to load the bases with one out, but all three runners were stranded.

The Hammerheads plated five runs in the seventh to widen their lead to 10-1. The Cardinals were unable to rally.

The Cardinals scored one run on five hits, all singles. Salazar was 2-for-4. Pino, Jose Suarez, and Rainiel Rodriguez each recorded a hit. The lineup was 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 12 on base.

On the bases, Cordoba swiped his fifth bag.

On defense, center fielder Pino made a throwing error.

Palm Beach Cardinals 2, Jupiter Hammerheads 5 (7 innings, game two)

The Palm Beach Cardinals dropped Saturday’s second game to the Jupiter Hammerheads and were swept in the home doubleheader.

Nolan Sparks started for the Cardinals. The right-hander pitched 4 ⅔ innings and allowed three runs on three hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. Sparks took the loss.

Aaron Holiday yielded two runs over one inning in relief. Alan Reyes followed with 1 ⅓ innings of scoreless baseball.

Palm Beach struck first with a run in the third inning. Heriberto Caraballo hit his first home run of the season and the third of his career, a solo shot.

Jupiter scored two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and another pair in the sixth to jump ahead 5-1.

Palm Beach scored another run in the home sixth. Jonathan Mejia, Rainiel Rodriguez, and Jose Suarez walked to load the bases with no outs. Luis Pino hit a sharp single to plate Mejia and move Palm Beach closer at 5-2. The rally was cut short due to a popout and back-to-back strikeouts.

Palm Beach was just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

The Cardinals scored two runs on three hits. Caraballo hit a solo home run. Pino singled and drove in a run. Suarez drew two walks.

On the bases, Johnfrank Salazar was caught stealing second base.

The Cardinals did not commit an error on defense.

Palm Beach is 48-51 overall, and 16-18 in the second half. They will look to snap their four-game skid on Sunday.

Sunday’s game: vs. Jupiter. Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 AM CT.

DSL Cardinals 4 at DSL Marlins 6 (8 innings)

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals lost a close contest to the Marlins in an eight-inning road contest on Saturday.

Earle Zulueta made his fourth start for the Cardinals. The right-hander pitched 2 ⅓ innings and yielded one unearned run on two hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.

Daniel Gomez allowed one run with five strikeouts across four innings in relief of Zulueta, taking the tough luck loss. Ryan Rodriguez surrendered three runs and recorded just one out. Ricardo Fernandez gave up a run and struck out a pair across 1 ⅔ innings.

The Cardinals began the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Yeferson Portolatin drew a walk. Portolatin stole second and advanced to third via a throwing error. He scored on a wild pitch.

The Marlins tied the game at one apiece in the home first and added one run in the sixth and three in the seventh to move ahead 5-1.

The Cardinals trimmed the deficit to one in the top of the eighth. Jesus Perez singled and swiped second base. Crisofer Lebron pinch-ran for Perez. Portolatin walked and Juan Rujano was hit by a pitch. Bryan Amoroso drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Lebron home. Juan Pablo Cabrera hit a groundball single to plate Portolatin and Rujano to bring the Cardinals within a run at 5-4.

The Marlins plated an insurance run in the home eighth. The Cardinals were unable to answer.

The DSL Cardinals scored four runs on four hits. Cabrera singled and recorded two RBI. Portolatin doubled, walked twice, and scored a run. Amoroso drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk. Rujano tallied a single and a run scored.

On the bases, Perez stole his sixth bag. Portolatin swiped his 16th.

On defense, shortstop Miguel Hernandez committed a fielding error. Pitcher Rodriguez made a throwing error. Zulueta picked a runner off first base from the mound.

The DSL Cardinals are 22-22 on the season. They reside in third place in the DSL Southeast Division, five games behind the Marlins. The Cardinals are off Sunday and will play a home contest with the DSL Phillies Red on Monday.

Monday’s game: vs. DSL Phillies Red. Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 AM CT.
