Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 28, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 0-4 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield OF Bryan Torres, was 3-for-3 with a walk, stolen base and run scored. Other standouts include Jordan Walker, Matt Koperniak, Matt Lloyd and Brayden Jobert.

Memphis 3 at Iowa 4

The Triple-A Redbirds fell to the Cubs in a 4-3 road loss on Tuesday. Steven Matz made what may be his final rehab start. The St. Louis left-hander pitched three innings, gave up four runs, two earned, on five hit and struck out three. Matz took the loss.

Ryan Shreve

Ryan Shreve relieved Matz and threw three scoreless innings on one hit, one walk and two strikeouts. Andre Granillo hurled a scoreless seventh, and Chris Roycroft tossed a scoreless ninth.

Iowa went up 2-0 in the first inning and added two runs in the third to lead 4-0.

Memphis came back in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2. Mike Antico singled. Jordan Walker doubled. Nolan Gorman drew a walk. Matt Koperniak drove in Antico and Walker on a double.

The Redbirds put up a final run in the seventh to shrink the lead to 4-3. Gavin Collins singled and later scored on a double by Walker.

The Memphis offense scored three runs on eight hits. Walker was 2-for-4, both doubles, with an RBI. Koperniak drove in two.

Shortstop Thomas Saggese committed a fielding error.

Memphis is 62-65 on the season, 24-28 in the second half. They are tied for sixth place in the International League West.

Wednesday’s game:  at Iowa, LHP Zack Thompson (3-3, 4.50) vs. Brandon Birdsell RHP (2-4, 4.14) 12:08 CT.

Springfield 3 at Wichita 4

The Double-A Cardinals were topped by the Wind Surge in a 4-3 road loss on Tuesday. Brandon Komar took the mound for Springfield. The right-hander pitched four innings, gave up four runs, two earned, on seven hits. Komar fanned six and walked two and took the loss.

Zane Mills

Zane Mills relieved Komar and threw three perfect innings including one strikeout. Leonardo Taveras tossed a scoreless eighth.

Wichita scored two runs in the first inning and added to their lead with two more runs in the fourth.

Springfield was held scoreless until the seventh inning when R.J. Yeager thumped a solo home run to cut the lead to 4-1.

In the eighth, the Cardinals closed the gap to one. Jeremy Rivas singled. Bryan Torres doubled. Matt Lloyd plated Rivas and Torres with a double.

Springfield scored three runs on eight hits. Torres was 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Rivas was 2-for-3. Lloyd had two RBI. St. Louis rehabber Michael Siani went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and started in center field.

Torres stole his 30th base. Rivas was caught stealing.

Jacob Buchberger made two fielding errors. Nathan Church had an outfield assist at home plate. Komar picked a runner off first base.

Springfield is 70-51 on the season, 33-19 in the second half. They remain in first place in the Texas League North.

Wednesday’s game:  at Wichita, Tink Hence RHP (4-3, 2.67) vs. C.J. Culpepper RHP (0-0, 11.81) 7:05 CT.

Peoria 5 at Beloit 7

The High-A Chiefs fell to the Sky Carp in a 7-5 road loss on Tuesday. Brycen Mautz was on the bump for Peoria. The left-hander pitched six innings, gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits, fanned seven and walked two.

Tanner Jacobson relieved Mautz and surrendered three runs in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss. Dionys Rodriguez secured the final out of the eighth.

Peoria got on the board with one run in the top of the first. Chase Davis doubled and scored on a ground-rule double by Tre Richardson.

Beloit put up two runs in the home half of the first and added a run in the third to lead 3-1.

The Chiefs fought back with three runs in the fourth to go up 4-3. Won-Bin Cho singled. Alex Iadisernia drove in Cho with a double. Miguel Villarroel singled. Brayden Jobert plated Iadisernia and Villarroel on a double.

Peoria put another run on the board in the fifth to lead 5-3. Darlin Moquete doubled and Davis drew a walk. Richardson bunted the runners over. Cho walked. Moquete scored on a sac fly by Chase Adkison.

Beloit rallied for two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to recapture the lead at 7-5.

Peoria scored five runs on 11 hits. Moquete, Davis, Cho, and Villarroel were each 2-for-4. Jobert drove in two runs.

Iadisernia stole his 19th base. Moquete was caught stealing.

Villaroel made a throwing error. Cho had an outfield assist at second base.

Peoria is 54-66 on the season, 28-27 in the second half and are in third place in the Midwest League West, 4.5 game back of Wisconsin, and one game back of Quad Cities.

Wednesday’s game:  at Beloit, Inohan Paniagua RHP (7-8, 3.76) vs. TBD (BEL) 6:35 CT.

Palm Beach 0, Daytona 2

The Class-A Cardinals were blanked by the Tortugas by the score of 2-0 at Roger Dean Stadium on Tuesday.  Memphis’ Sem Robberse continued his rehab in Palm Beach and pitched three innings. The right-hander gave up one run on four hits, struck out three and walked one.

Hunter Kublick relieved Robberse and threw two scoreless innings. Augusto Calderon surrendered one run in the sixth. Nolan Sparks hurled two scoreless innings. Michael Watson tossed a scoreless ninth.

Daytona took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and they added a second run in the sixth to lead 2-0.

The Beach Birds were held scoreless and scattered four hits. Joshua Baez was 2-for-3. A double by Bryce Madron was the only extra base hit. The offense was 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.

Baez stole his fourth base. Robberse made an error on a pickoff. Watson picked a runner off first base.

Palm Beach is 74-45 on the season, 37-15 in the second half.
