Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 23, 2026

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league system was 1-2 on a rainy Saturday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis catcher Leo Bernal, walked, homered and plated four. Other standouts: Pete Hansen, Cooper Hjerpe, Colton Ledbetter, Ryan Mitchell, Ian Petrutz and Cade McGee.

Memphis Redbirds 10, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 0

The Triple-A Memphis Redbirds shut out the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp by a 10-0 score in a rain-delayed contest at AutoZone Park on Saturday night.

Cooper Hjerpe started for Memphis. The left-hander pitched 3 ⅔ scoreless innings on one hit, five walks, and seven strikeouts to lower his Memphis ERA to 0.60.

Pete Hansen threw 3 ⅓ scoreless innings in relief of Hjerpe and picked up his third win. Cade Winquest struck out four across two no-hit innings to finish the game.

Memphis began the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Victor Scott II walked and moved to third on a Colton Ledbetter single. Ledbetter swiped second. Nolan Gorman brought Scott II home on a groundout.

The Redbirds scored twice in the third. Noah Mendlinger hit a lead-off single. Scott II and Ledbetter took back-to-back walks to load the bases with no outs. Leo Bernal plated Mendlinger on a groundout. Gorman scored Scott II on a groundout for a 3-0 Memphis lead.

The Redbirds broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning.

Bligh Madris walked and scored on a Ramon Mendoza double to extend the lead to 4-0.

Scott II stole third base. Ledbetter walked and swiped second. Bernal blasted a three-run home run, his 16th of the year, to widen the lead to 8-0.

Memphis added two runs in the seventh. With two outs, Madris walked. Mendoza reached on a throwing error, with Madris to third base on the play. Madris crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Mendlinger lined a single to bring Mendoza home and stretch the lead to 10-0.

Memphis pitching allowed just two hits in the dominant win.

The Redbirds scored 10 runs on 10 hits. Bernal walked, hit a home run, and collected four RBI. Mendlinger was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Mendoza doubled, scored twice, and drove in a run. Scott II walked twice, scored three times, doubled, and notched an RBI. Gorman tallied two RBI. Ledbetter was 2-for-3, including two walks, a double, three runs scored, and an RBI.

On the bases, Ledbetter stole two bags to increase his season total to 23. Thomas Saggese stole his ninth base. Scott II swiped his 19th bag.

The Redbirds did not commit an error.

Memphis is 22-28 in the second half and 69-56 overall. They will look to split the series with a win on Sunday.

Sunday’s game: vs. Jacksonville. LHP Josh Fleming (system debut) vs. RHP Jace Beck (7-3, 3.36) 1:05 PM CT.

Springfield Cardinals at Arkansas Travelers (suspended)

The Double-A Springfield Cardinals’ road contest with the Arkansas Travelers was suspended on Saturday due to inclement weather. The game is slated to be completed on Sunday, followed by the day’s regularly scheduled contest.

The game will resume at a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Springfield is 31-18 in the second half and would sweep the series with two wins on Sunday.

Sunday’s games: Pitching probables have not yet been announced for the resumption of Saturday’s game, with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 PM CT.

Game two: RHP Blake Aita (3-5, 4.43) vs. RHP Adam Leverett (4-5, 4.95) approximately 1:35 PM CT.

Peoria Chiefs 0 at Lansing Lugnuts 1 (6 innings)

The High-A Peoria Chiefs’ road game with the Lansing Lugnuts was cut short on Saturday due to rain.

Jacob Odle started his 13th game for Peoria. The right-hander tosed 4 ⅔ innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts, taking the tough loss. Gerardo Salas secured the final out of the fifth inning, the Chiefs’ last inning on defense in the game.

Lansing took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Peoria looked to answer in the third. Cade McGee hit a leadoff double. Andrew Williamson and Caden Ferraro walked to load the bases, but all runners were unable to score.

In the sixth, Ian Perrutz doubled with two outs to bring Anyelo Encarnación to the plate, though rain forced an early conclusion and the tough 1-0 loss for Peoria.

The Chiefs scored no runs on four hits, all doubles. Petrutz and McGee had two each. The lineup was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

The Chiefs did not steal a base. On defense, catcher McGee made a throwing error.

Peoria is 24-28 in the second half and 56-62 overall. They will look to win on Sunday and seal a series split.

Sunday’s game: at Lansing. RHP Brian Holiday (High-A debut) vs. LHP Tucker Novotny (2-2, 5.19). 12:05 PM CT.

Palm Beach Cardinals 2, Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 5 (7 innings)

The Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals dropped a close contest to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. The game was called in the seventh inning due to inclement weather.

Payton Graham made his 13th start in his 14th game for the Cardinals. The right-hander pitched three scoreless, no-hit innings and allowed one walk and three strikeouts.

Yaidel Batista gave up two runs across 2 ⅔ innings in relief of Graham. Nathan Shinn surrendered three runs over 1 ⅓ frames, taking the loss.

The Cardinals pounced early with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Mitchell was hit by a pitch and stole second. Matthew Miura walked to load the bases. Miguel Hernández was hit by a pitch to force Mitchell home and put Palm Beach ahead 1-0.

Palm Beach doubled the lead in the third. Mitchell launched his 13th long ball of the year, a solo shot.

Fort Myers scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings and plated three in the seventh to move ahead 5-3. The Cardinals were unable to answer before the weather-induced early conclusion.

The Cardinals scored two runs on just one hit, Mitchell’s home run. He scored twice. Dos Santos and Miura each walked twice. Hernández collected an RBI.

On the bases, Mitchell swiped his 37th bag. Gabe Camacho stole the first base of his career.

On defense, Pitcher Shinn made a throwing error. Pitcher Batista picked off a runner at first base. Catcher Jayden Lobliner was tagged with a passed ball.

Palm Beach is 25-27 in the second half and 59-60 overall. They will look to win the series on Sunday.

Sunday’s game: vs. Fort Myers. TBA vs. RHP Eric Hammond (1-4, 4.76) 11:30 AM CT.
