Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 22, 2024

On Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals system was 4-0 including three walkoffs. The Cardinal Nation Player of the Day, DH Darlin Moquete, hit a walk off two-run home run for Peoria. Moquete was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Other standouts include Mike Antico, Iván Herrera, Tink Hence, Noah Mendlinger and Ryan Campos.

Results for games played Wednesday, August 21.

Memphis 8, Charlotte 7 (10 innings)

The Memphis Redbirds blew a late lead only to win in a 10th inning walk off over the Knights at AutoZone Park on Wednesday. Steven Matz continued his rehab with a five inning start. The left hander gave up four runs on nine hits, struck out three and walked one.

Wilking Rodriguez relieved Matz and threw a scoreless sixth. Riley O’Brien surrendered one unearned run in the seventh. Victor Santos hurled a scoreless eighth. Ryan Loutos yielded two runs in 2/3 of an inning, both on walks. Chris Roycroft tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.

Charlotte put up two runs in the top of the second. Memphis answered with a five-run bottom of the second to lead 5-2. Alfonso Rivas walked. Gavin Collins singled. New Redbird Chandler Redmond walked. Nick Dunn drove in Rivas and Collins on a single. Mike Antico followed with a three-run home run to right field.

The Knights scored two runs in the third to tighten the lead to 5-4. In the fifth, the Redbirds added two runs to the tally to lead 7-4. Thomas Saggese received a free pass. Iván Herrera thumped a two-run home run to left center field.

Charlotte made it 7-5 in the seventh. The Knights tied the game with two bases loaded walks in the ninth. In the 10th, Charlotte failed to score against Roycroft.

The Redbirds walked it off in the bottom of the 10th. Herrera began the inning on second base, stole third and came home on Rivas’ sac fly.

Memphis scored eight runs on 11 hits. Antico was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Hererra was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Dunn was 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Antico stole his ninth base. Herrera swiped his third bag. O’Brien made an error on a pickoff.

Memphis is 61-61 on the season, 23-24 in the second half. They are tied with Toledo for sixth place in the International League West.

Springfield 3, Tulsa 2 (10 innings)

The Double-A Cardinals beat the Drillers in a 10th inning walk off on Wednesday at Hammons Field. Tink Hence started on the bump for Springfield. The right hander pitched four scoreless innings, allowed three hits, struck out two and walked two.

Nathanael Heredia relieved Hence and threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Andrew Marrero surrendered one run in 1 2/3 innings. Jack Ralston hurled a scoreless eighth. Matt Svanson yielded one unearned run in the final two innings to earn his fourth win.

The game was scoreless for the first five innings before Tulsa broke through in the sixth for a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals tied the game in the seventh. Jeremy Rivas was hit by a pitch. Nathan Church singled. Jimmy Crooks plated Rivas on a sac fly.

The game remained tied through regulation. In the top of the 10th, the Drillers scored one run to lead 2-1. In the bottom of the inning, Springfield produced two runs to win in walk off fashion 3-2.

With Bryan Torres on second base, Church drew a walk. Jimmy Crooks reached on a fielder’s choice. R.J. Yeager was plunked and Torres came home. Church was thrown out at home on a force out by Jacob Buchberger. Matt Lloyd pinch ran for Crooks. Noah Mendlinger drove in Lloyd on a single.

The Cardinals scored three runs on just five hits. Mendlinger was 2-for-4 with an RBI and stole his third base of the season. Rivas was caught stealing.

Springfield is 67-49 on the season, 30-17 in the second half. They remain in first place in the Texas League North.

Thursday’s game:  vs. Tulsa, Alex Cornwell LHP (5-2, 5.81) vs. Jerming Rosario RHP (2-3, 4.76) 6:35 CT.

Peoria 3, Fort Wayne 2

The High-A Chiefs edged the TinCaps in a 3-2 walkoff at Dozer Park on Wednesday. Inohan Paniagua started for Peoria. The right-hander pitched six innings, gave up two runs on four hits, fanned six and walked two.

Tyler Bradt relieved Paniagua and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Dionys Rodriguez tossed the final 2/3 of a scoreless inning for the win.

Fort Wayne went up 1-0 in the first and added a run in the sixth to lead 2-0.

Peoria scored their first run in the seventh. Darlin Moquete and Kade Kretzschmar singled. Moquete scored on a sac fly by Miguel Villarroel.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Chiefs rallied for two runs to win the game in a walk off. Tre Richardson led off with a single, the stole second base. Moquete followed with a walk off two-run home run to left center field.

The Chiefs plated three runs on just six hits. Moquete was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Alex Iadisernia stole his 17th base of the season. Richardson swiped his 11th bag.

Peoria is 52-63 on the season, 26-24 in the second half. They are in third place in the Midwest League West.

Thursday’s game:  vs. Fort Wayne, Hancel Rincon RHP (8-6, 3.77) vs. Enmanuel Pinales RHP (3-9, 3.83) 6:35 CT.

Palm Beach 9 at St. Lucie 4

The Low-A Cardinals defeated the Mets in a 9-4 road win on Wednesday. Hunter Kublick started for Palm Beach. The right-hander pitched five innings, gave up three runs on nine hits and struck out four to earn his fifth win of the season.

Nolan Sparks relieved Kublick and threw two scoreless innings. Nelfy Ynfante surrendered one run in the final two innings.

The Beach Birds took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bryce Madron led off with a single. Ryan Campos followed with a walk. Jose Suarez singled. Madron scored on a sac fly by Ross Friedrick. Joshua Baez drove in Campos on a single. Baez stole second base and Suarez stole home.

The Mets answered in the home first with two runs and added one run in the second to tie the game at three apiece.

Palm Beach broke the stalemate in the sixth on a solo home run by Suarez. In the seventh the Cardinals added two runs to lead 6-3. Lizandro Espinoza tripled and scored on a single by Madron. Madron came home on a double by Campos.

Palm Beach made It 9-3 in the top of the eighth. Baez singled. Anyelo Encarnacion drew a walk. Jon Jon Gazdar reached on an error. Espinoza plated Baez on a single. Encarnacion was thrown out at home. Campos drove in Gazdar on a double. Espinoza scored on a single by J.J. Wetherholt.

St. Lucie rallied for one run in the bottom of the eighth to bring the final score to 9-4.

The Cardinals scored nine runs on 13 hits. Campos was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Baez was 3-for-5 with an RBI.  Espinoza was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Madron and Suarez were both 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Baez stole his first base for Palm Beach. Suarez swiped his second bag. Encarnacion stole his fifth base.

Palm Beach is 71-43 on the season, 34-14 in the second half. They remain in first place in the FSL East.
