The St. Louis Cardinals system went 4-3 in six Saturday games. The Cardinal Nation Player of the Day is center fielder Tommy Jew, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI in Peoria’s win over Beloit. Other Saturday standouts are Jake Woodford, Todd Lott, Jose Moreno, Thomas Francisco and Jose Rodriguez.

The Redbirds topped the Sounds in a one run victory at AutoZone Park on Saturday night. Starter Jake Woodford went seven innings and gave up two runs on eight hits, struck out four and walked one. Tommy Parsons pitched a scoreless eighth. Kodi Whitley surrendered a run in the ninth but earned his second save. Woodford got the win, his first of the season with Memphis.
Memphis scored on a first-inning solo home run by Nolan Gorman. Nashville tied it up with one run in the second.
The Redbirds retook the lead in the third on an RBI double by Conner Capel and a single by Ali Sanchez that scored Capel. Memphis led 3-1.
The Sounds answered with one run in the fourth, but the Redbirds scored again in the home half of the fourth. Evan Mendoza led off with a triple. A single by Brendan Donovan delivered his first Triple-A RBI.
The scored remained 4-2 until the ninth inning when Nashville attempted to rally. The Sounds managed only one run, however, and the Redbirds took home the narrow win.
Mendoza was 3-for-4. Gorman was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
On the base paths, Mendoza was caught stealing for the fourth time this season.
Memphis has a record of 45-50 and is in fifth place in the Triple-A East Southeast Division, 16.5 games back of first place Durham.
Sunday’s game: vs. Nashville, Connor Thomas LHP (5-2, 339) vs. TBD 2:05 CT.
The Double-A Cardinals were blanked by the Wind Surge at Hammons Field on Saturday night. The Springfield offense managed only five hits against Wichita pitching.
The Cards had an early scoring opportunity when Delvin Perez led off with a double and Nick Plummer followed with a walk. But Ivan Herrera grounded into a double play and Chandler Redmond lined out to end the threat.
A second scoring opportunity came in the fourth when Springfield had the bases loaded on two singles and a walk, but a strike out by Matt Koperniak ended the inning.
The double by Perez was the only extra base hit. The Cardinals offense was 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and 10 runners were left on base.
Despite the lack of offense, the Cardinals pitching kept Wichita scoreless until the eighth inning. Starter Domingo Robles pitched three scoreless innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts. Ramon Santos pitched the next 4 1/3 innings and surrendered one run in the eighth. Jacob Bosiokovic yielded another run in the final 1 2/3 innings. Santos took the tough loss, his fourth of the season.
Springfield is 35-60 and stands in last place in the Double-A Central North Division, 21 games back of first place Wichita.

The Chiefs outpaced the Snappers in the final inning for a one-run road win on Saturday night. Peoria took the early lead, but Beloit fought back to keep with the Chiefs until the end.
Peoria put three runs on the board in the first inning. Leadoff man Masyn Winn reached on an error, then stole second base. Pedro Pages singled to score Winn and Todd Lott blasted a two-run home run to put the Chiefs ahead 3-0. It was the first baseman’s third consecutive game going deep.

The Snappers came back to tie in the fourth inning. The scored remained 3-3 until Peoria took a 4-3 lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Tommy Jew.
Beloit battled back to tie it for the second time in the eighth. In the ninth, Moises Castillo singled and Jew tripled to plate him, and the lead reverted back to the Chiefs 5-4. The Snappers did not rally in the bottom half of the inning and the Chiefs took home the win.
Jew, who came into the night hitting just .107 with the Chiefs, was their top offensive performer, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Starter Connor Lunn pitched five innings, and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits and fanned seven. Diego Cordero surrendered one run in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Paul Schwendel threw the final 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win, his second of the season.
Winn stole his eighth base of the season and Jew stole his second bag in 2021. Leandro Cedeno and Castillo both made throwing errors.
Peoria is 36-59 and sits in last place in the High-A Central West Division, 27 games back of first place Quad Cities.
Sunday’s game: at Beloit, Wilfredo Pereira (2-8, 3.97) vs. TBD 2:05 CT.
The Cardinals blanked the Tortugas by the score of 4-0 on a three-hitter at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Saturday night. Starter Jose Moreno pitched six scoreless innings, allowed two hits, and walked four with no strikeouts. Ryan Loutos tossed two run-free innings of relief. Andre Granillo threw a scoreless ninth. Moreno earned his first win of the season after six losses.
The Beach Birds got on the board in the fourth inning, posting three runs. Ryan Holgate led off with a single and Jacob Buchberger followed with a walk. Thomas Francisco singled to plate Holgate. Patrick Romeri doubled to score Buchberger and Francisco.
Palm Beach added on with one run in the eighth on a walk by Francisco and a single by Romeri that sent Francisco to third. Francisco came home on a double steal.
The red-hot Francisco raised his season and career average to .390 by going 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Holgate was 2-for-5 and Romeri was 2-for-4.
Romeri stole his second base of the season, and Francisco swiped his first.
Palm Beach has a record of 30-61 and is in last place in the Low-A Southeast East Division, 18.5 games back of first place St. Lucie.
Sunday’s game: at Daytona, Ludwin Jimenez (0-6, 4.98) vs. Bryce Bonnin (4-0, 1.24) 4:35 CT.
The Cardinals (17-17) were edged by the Mets 2-1 in a Saturday morning contest in St. Lucie. The Cardinals fell behind early and did not score until the final inning.
The Mets put one run on the board in the first and added a second run in the fourth.
The Cardinals were held scoreless until the ninth when Jeremy Rivas led off with a walk and Jake Burns singled, moving Rivas to third. One batter later, Rivas scored on a wild pitch. The rally ended after Roblin Heredia struck out and Luis Montano flied out to left field.
The Cardinals were held to three hits in total. Rivas had the only extra base hit, a double.
Starter Michael McGreevy pitched only 2/3 of inning, giving up one run on three hits and striking out two. The 2021 first-rounder was not at his best, yielding a single, double and triple on his way to his second professional loss. Reinys Portillo tossed 4 1/3 frames and surrendered one run. Bryan Pope, Zane Mills, and Roy Garcia each threw a scoreless inning of relief.
Heredia had a passed ball, his ninth of the season.
Sunday’s game: No game scheduled.
DSL Cardinals Red 7 at DSL Cardinals Blue 6
The Cardinals Red (14-10) defeated the Cardinals Blue (10-18) by a single run on Saturday. Blue took the first lead with a five-run inning, but Red bounced back to score enough to edge their sister team.
The game was scoreless until the Blue went on a tear In the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs. Adari Grant and Maycol Justo hit back-to-back singles, before Keshawn Rombley doubled to score Grant. Alejandro Loaiza singled to plate Maycol and Rombley. Javier Bolivar drew a walk. Robelyn Lopez tripled and Loaiza and Bolivar scored.
Red answered in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-2. Carlos Linarez walked and Elias Reynoso singled. A wild pitch advanced both runners. Samil De La Rosa reached on a throwing error that scored Linarez and Reynoso.
Blue added a run in the home half of the fifth to increase the lead to 6-2. Grant reached on an error and Justo singled. Luis Piño grounded into a double play and Grant scored.
Red closed the gap in the sixth with two. Santiago Carbonara walked, and Jose Rodriguez doubled. Raul Guzman singled to plate Carbonara and Rodriguez.
In the eighth, Jose Rodriguez blasted a three-run home run to give Red the 7-6 lead. Blue failed to scored after the fifth and Red took home the victory.
For Blue, Justo, Rombley, and Lopez were each 2-for-4. Loaiza and Lopez each had two RBI.
For Red, Carbonara and Rodriguez were both 2-for-4. Rodriguez had three RBI, and Guzman drove in two.
Blue starter Ronny Oliver pitched three scoreless innings and struck out two. Randal Clemente surrendered two unearned runs in two innings of relief. Alexander Beltre yielded two runs in two innings pitched. Victor Herrera pitched the eighth and gave up three runs on Rodriguez’ long ball and was charged with the blown save and the loss. Alejandro Cervantes threw a scoreless ninth.
Red starter Yonael Dominquez pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on five hits, fanned seven and walked one. Omar Yanez surrendered one unearned run in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Diorys Guerrero threw the final four scoreless innings to earn the win, his third of the season.
On the base paths for Blue, Rombley was caught stealing for the second time this season.
In the field for Blue, Bryan Encarnacion made a throwing error. Diego Velasquez had a missed catch. For Red, Yanez made a fielding error and a pickoff error.
