Results from the games played Tuesday, August 21st.

Memphis 0 at New Orleans 5

Wilfredo Tovar (Steve Mitchell/USA TODAY Sports)

The Redbirds opened their three-game road series versus the Baby Cakes with a 5-0 defeat.  Thanks to a loss by second-place Nashville (OAK), first-place Memphis’ (76-51) magic number to clinch the American Southern Division title was still reduced to five.

Facing New Orleans for the second straight start, Tyler Lyons (L, 0-1) improved a tad from his prior outing in which he yielded two runs in 3 1/3.  This time out all tallies charged to the lefty over 5 1/3 resulted from one three-run home run.  The bomb was one of three hits and one walk allowed to go with five strikeouts.

Landon Beck retired the sixth’s final two batters, stranding an inherited runner but rehabbing Dominic Leone was touched for a run on three hits in the seventh.  Andrew Morales allowed a triple and sac fly in his inning of work.

The visitors’ offense was limited to six hits, two each by Wilfredo Tovar and Adolis Garcia.  Tovar singled and doubled in three at bats while Garcia went 2-for-4, but unsuccessful in his only stolen base attempt.  Right fielder Garcia was credited with an outfield assist at third.

Matt Pearce is still looking for his first Double-A win of 2018 after absorbing his sixth loss in as many decisions.  The 24-year-old yielded four runs, three earned, on four hits and a base-on-balls through five.  Two of the four tallies were generated by a home run.  Elniery Garcia, Junior Fernandez and Seth Elledge each tossed a clean frame, with Garcia and Elledge giving up one hit.

Springfield’s entire offense consisted of three singles, two by Johan Mieses, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored.  John Nogowski’s RBI single in the ninth spolied the Naturals’ shutout bid.

Zach Prendergast (L, 6-3) allowed two runs on six hits and a free pass over four.  But the most damage came off Ben Yokley and Fabian Blanco in the next two frames.  Yokley was charged with four tallies on two hits and two walks in just 2/3 of an inning.  Blanco recorded the fifth’s last out but did not retire any of the five batters faced the next frame.  All of them came around to score, the final two with Patrick Dayton on the mound.

Dayton tossed two innings, permitting two hits and joining Blanco by hitting a batter.  Kodi Whitley tossed a clean eighth.

Two of the Chiefs’ four hits came in the fourth and led to their sole score.  Rayder Ascanio opened with a single, his only hit in four at bats, then advanced to third on a double by Nolan Gorman.  Luken Baker ground out to first, bringing Ascanio home.

Seven Gulf Birds generated multi-hit performances. Jhon Torres went 3-for-5 with a run batted in.  One of the two hits each by Diomedes Del Rio, Terry Fuller and William Jimenez was a home run. Del Rio and Fuller did it with the bases clean and Jimenez brought home three.  Cole Kreuter, Mateo Gil and Zack Gahagan had two hits apiece.

Diowill Burgos began the home half of the 10th on second and was sacrificed to third by Pablo Guzman.  Burgos remained at third while Jose Zapata grounded out, 6-3, but capitalized on a passed ball to race home for the victory.

Two of the three tallies charged to De Los Santos scored with Gustavo J. Rodriguez on the mound.  Rodriguez gave up a hit and walk in 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Dionys Rodriguez.  The latter Rodriguez served up a three-run home run in the eighth.
