Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 21, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 4-1 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, RF Chris Rotondo, went 2-for-5 including a walk off grand slam for Springfield. Other standouts include César Prieto, Brycen Mautz, and Darlin Moquete.



Results for games played Tuesday, August 20.

Memphis 8, Charlotte 7

The Triple-A Redbirds held on to top the Knights by an 8-7 score on Tuesday at AutoZone Park. Gordon Graceffo started for Memphis. The right-hander pitched four innings, gave up five runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked two.

Nick Raquet relieved Graceffo and surrendered two runs in three innings to receive the win. Jacob Bosiokovic tossed the final two scoreless innings and earned his first save.

Charlotte scored five runs in the top of the first inning to lead 5-0. Memphis came back with six runs in the home half of the first to lead 6-5. Mike Antico, Thomas Saggese and Matt Koperniak each received a free pass. Iván Herrera singled to score Antico. Saggese came home on a wild pitch. César Prieto plated Koperniak and Herrera on a double. José Fermín singled. Alfonso Rivas drove in Prieto on a ground out. Gavin Collins singled. Ramon Mendoza hit a sac fly to score Fermín.

Memphis added a run in the second on a solo home run by Saggese. In the top of the sixth, Charlotte scored a run to shrink the Redbirds’ lead to 7-6.

Memphis answered with one run in the bottom of the sixth. Saggese doubled and later scored on a sac fly by Koperniak.

The Knights made it closer in the seventh with one run for the final tally of 8-7.

Memphis scored eight runs on 11 hits. Prieto was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Saggese was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Collins was 2-for-4.

On the bases, Rivas was picked off first base.

Memphis is 60-61 on the season, 22-24 in the second half. They are tied with Toledo for sixth place in the International League West.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Charlotte, LH Steven Matz (MLB rehab) vs. TBD 6:45 CT.

Springfield 9, Tulsa 6

The Double-A Cardinals beat the Drillers in a 9-6 walk off on Tuesday. Brandon Komar started for Springfield. The right-hander pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up four runs, one earned, on five hits, fanned six and walked two.

Benito Garcia relieved Komar and surrendered two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Wilfredo Pereira tossed the final two scoreless innings and earned the win.

Tulsa went up 1-0 in the first inning, then added three runs in the second. Springfield got on the board in the fourth inning with three runs to cut the lead to 4-3. Chris Rotondo singled. Dakota Harris was hit by a pitch. Bryan Torres drove in Rotondo on a single. Harris came home on a single by Jacob Buchberger. Torres crossed the plate, taking two bases on a wild pitch.

Tulsa increased their lead to 6-3 in the seventh. In the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals rallied for six runs to win in a walk off 9-6. Torres and Buchberger singled. Jimmy Crooks plated Torres on a single. Nathan Church pinch ran for Crooks. R.J. Yeager walked. Chandler Redmond walked and Buchberger came home. With the bases still juiced, Rotondo blasted a grand slam to left center field.

The Cardinals scored nine runs on 11 hits. Rotondo was 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Torres was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Buchberger was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Torres stole his 29th base of the season. He also committed a fielding error and had an outfield assist at third base.

Springfield is 66-49 on the season, 29-17 in the second half. They remain in first place in the Texas League North by two games.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Tulsa, Tink Hence RHP (4-3, 2.84) vs. Carlos Duran RHP (0-2, 1.99) 6:35 CT.

Peoria 2, Fort Wayne 1

The High-A Chiefs edged the TinCaps by 2-1 score at Dozer Park on Tuesday. Brycen Mautz was on the bump for Peoria. The left hander pitched seven innings, gave up one run on four hits and fanned 12.

Tanner Jacobson relieved Mautz and tossed the final two scoreless innings for his fourth save.

Peoria got on the board first with a run in the fourth inning. Darlin Moquete singled and later scored on a single by Tre Richardson.

Fort Wayne tied the game in the top of the sixth. The Chiefs answered in the home half half with a solo home run by Moquete.

The Peoria offense scored two runs on seven hits. Moquete was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Brody Moore was 2-for-4.

Moore stole his 18th base of the season. Miguel Villarroel was caught stealing.

Peoria is 51-63 on the season, 25-24 in the second half. They are in third place in the Midwest League West.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Fort Wayne, Inohan Paniagua RHP (7-8, 3.81) vs. TBD (FW) 6:35 CT.

Palm Beach 5 at St. Lucie 3

The High-A Cardinals defeated the Mets in a 5-3 road win on Tuesday. Sem Robberse made his second rehab start for Palm Beach. The Memphis right-hander pitched two innings, and gave up one unearned run on four hits.

Regular starter Jason Savacool relieved Robberse and surrendered two runs in five innings. Luis Gastelum tossed the final two scoreless innings.

The Beach Birds took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Christian Martin drew a walk and stole second base. Ryan Campos received a free pass. J.J. Wetherholt grounded into a force out with Campos out a second. Joshua Baez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ian Petrutz was plunked and Martin scored.

The Mets ties the game in the second. Palm Beach retook the lead with a run in the top of the third. Wetherholt walked and stole second base. Petrutz drove him home on a double.

The Mets answered in the home third with two runs to lead 3-2. In the sixth, the Cardinals plated two runs to lead again by the score of 4-3. Ross Friedrick led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Martin reached on an error and Friedrick scored. Martin came home on a single by Campos.

Palm Beach added an insurance run in the ninth on a solo home run by Jose Suarez.

The Cardinals scored five runs on seven hits. Suarez was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Petrutz had two RBI.

Martin stole his second base of the season. Wetherholt swiped his first bag. Suarez and Jose Cordoba were both caught stealing.

Savacool picked a runner off first base. Sammy Hernandez had a passed ball.

Palm Beach is 70-43 on the season, 33-14 in the second half. They remain in first place in the FSL East by 7 1/2 games.

Wednesday’s game:  at St. Lucie, RH Hunter Kublick (4-2, 4.02) vs. TBD 12:10 CT.

DSL Cardinals 4 at DSL Rockies 7

The rookie Cardinals fell to the Rockies by the score of 7-4 in the final game of their season and finishing with a losing record.

Andrew Bolivar started for the Cardinals and pitched 3 2/3 innings, gave up three runs on five hits, struck out two and walked four.

Brailyn Paulino relieved Bolivar and surrendered three runs, two earned, in one inning. Paulino took the loss.  Bernard Mack yielded one run in 1 1/3 innings. Xavier Cruz tossed the final two scoreless innings.

The Cardinals went up 1-0 in the second inning on a solo home run by Edward Guribe. They added two runs in the top of the fourth to lead 3-0. Christian Saez and Guribe singled. Yaxson Lucena drove in both runners with a double.

The Rockies came back in the home fourth to tie the game with three runs. The Cardinal regained the lead with one run in the of the fifth. Cristofer Lebron drew a walk. Daniel Rojas singled, moving Lebron to third. Lebron came home on a sac fly by Andru Arthur.

The Rockies recaptured the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 6-4. They added a run for a 7-4 lead in the sixth.

The Cardinals scored four runs on nine hits. Guribe was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Lucena had two RBI.

Rojas was caught stealing for the fifth time. He also made a throwing error. Mack picked a runner off third base.

The Cardinals finished 26-27 on the season, fifth place in the DSL Central, 14 games out of first.

Wednesday’s game:  None. The Dominican Summer League Cardinals have completed their season. See you next year!
