Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 19, 2021

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-3 on Wednesday.  The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is first baseman Juan Yepez, who was 2-for-4 including a two-run home run in Memphis’ win over Nashville.

Results from games played Wednesday, August 18.

Memphis 7, Nashville 6 (10 innings)

The Redbirds edged the Sounds in a 7-6 win in extra innings at AutoZone Park on Wednesday night.  Starter Angel Rondon pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up five runs, one earned, on six hits, struck out two and walked two.  Austin Warner tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.  Brandon Dickson pitched a scoreless seventh.  Connor Jones surrendered one run in the eighth.  Kodi Whitley threw the final two scoreless innings to earn the win, his third of the season.

Memphis scored first with one run in the second inning on an RBI single by Conner Capel.  The Sounds scored one in the third to tie.

The Sounds went up 5-1 in the fifth.  In the sixth, Juan Yepez blasted a two-run home run to pull the Redbirds to within two.

Nashville scored in the eighth to make it 6-3. The Redbirds responded in the home half of the eighth with three runs to tie.  Nolan Gorman drew a walk.  Yepez singled, and Alec Burleson walked to load the bases.  Gorman scored on a wild pitch.  Ali Sanchez followed with a double that plated Yepez and Burleson.

Neither team could break the tie in the ninth and the Sounds failed to score in their half of the 10th.  The Redbirds walked it off in the bottom of the 10th.  Kramer Robertson started on second base.  Gorman was intentionally walked.  Yepez reached on a fielder’s choice and Robertson scored for the win.

Yepez and Sanchez were each 2-for-4 on the night and both had two RBI.

Robertson and Evan Mendoza each made a fielding error.  Capel had an outfield assist at home plate.

Memphis is 43-49 and sits in fifth place in the Triple-A East Southeast Division, 15.5 games back of first place Durham

Thursday’s game:  vs. Nashville, Kwang-Hyun Kim (StL rehab)/Zack Thompson LHP (2-6, 6.38) vs. Dylan File RHP (1-2, 5.03) 7:10 CT.

Springfield 1, Wichita 7

The Cardinals were overpowered by the first place Wichita Wind Surge in a Wednesday night contest at Hammons Field.

The Springfield offense could only scratch one run across the plate while scattering nine hits.  That one run did not come until the eighth inning.  Meanwhile the Wind Surge feasted off Cardinals pitching to the tune of seven runs.

Wichita went up 2-0 in the fourth, then added two in the fifth and three in the eighth.  In the home half of the eighth, Brendan Donovan singled and scored on a ground rule double by Malcom Nunez for the lone run for Springfield.

Donovan was 3-for-4 with a triple and two singles.  The Nunez double was the only other Springfield extra base hit.

Kevin McGovern took the mound for the Cardinals.  The left hander pitched five innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on five hits, struck out five and walked one. Kyle Leahy threw the final four innings and surrendered three runs on six hits.  McGovern took the loss, his second of the season.

On the base paths, Donovan stole his eighth base of 2021.  Matt Koperniak and Chandler Redmond were both caught stealing.

In the field, Julio Rodriguez, and David Vinsky each made a throwing error.

Springfield is 35-57 and sits in last place in the Double-A Central North Division, 18 games back of first place Wichita.

Thursday’s game:  vs. Wichita, RHP Michael Brettell (0-2, 6.46) vs. Austin Schulfer RHP (3-7, 4.19) 7:05 CT.

Peoria 4 at Beloit 2

The Chiefs were the victors by a 4-2 score over the Beloit Snappers at ABC Supply Stadium on Wednesday night.  Though the game was close, Peoria’s bullpen kept the Beloit offense in check.

The Chiefs got on the board in the first inning on a solo home run by Masyn Winn.  The Snappers scored in the second inning to tie.

Peoria got the lead back in the third inning by grinding out a run.  Tommy Jew was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a balk.  Winn reached on an error that moved Jew to third.  Jordan Walker grounded out to plate Jew.

The Chiefs added to their lead in the fourth.  Pedro Pages drew a leadoff walk.  Leandro Cedeno and Todd Lott singled to load the bases.  Aaron Antonini was hit by a pitch and Pages scored.  Cedeno came home on a double play ball by Francisco Hernandez.

Beloit cut the lead to 4-2 with one run in the sixth but did not score in the final innings.

Winn was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  No other Chiefs hitter had multiple hits.  The Winn long ball was the only extra base hit in the game.

Starter Michael YaSenka pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits, struck out four and walked one.  Enmanuel Solano tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.  Nick Trogrlic-Iverson and Paul Schwendel each tossed a scoreless inning.  YaSenka received the win, his first with the Chiefs.

On the base paths, Hernandez stole his sixth base of the season and was caught stealing for the third time.  In the field, Hernandez and Schwendel each made a fielding error.

Peoria has a record of 35-57 and is in last place in the High-A Central West Division, 26 games back of first place Quad Cities.

Thursday’s game:  at Beloit, Logan Gragg RHP (2-4, 5.43) vs. TBD 6:35 CT.

Palm Beach 1 at Daytona 6

The Cardinals were defeated by the Daytona Tortugas by the score of 6-1 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Wednesday night.  The game was scoreless on both sides until the sixth inning when the Tortugas got to the bullpen of Palm Beach.

Dionys Rodriguez

Beach Birds starter Dionys Rodriguez pitched five scoreless innings, allowed two hits, fanned eight and walked two.  Levi Prater relieved in the sixth and surrendered all six runs in 1 2/3 innings.  Kevin Marrero tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Prater took the loss, his sixth of the season.

Daytona put three runs on the board in the sixth for the first runs in the game.  The Cardinals got one run back in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Mike Antico.

The Tortugas scored three more times in the seventh to widen their lead to 6-1.  Palm Beach did not threaten in the final two innings.

The Cardinals offense scored just the one run on four hits.  In addition to Antico’s long ball, Osvaldo Tovalin doubled for the only other extra base hit.

Palm Beach has a record of 28-60 and stands in last place in the Low-A Southeast Division, 19.5 games back of first place St. Lucie.

Thursday’s game:  at Daytona, Edgar Manzo RHP (4-3, 3.83) vs. Jose Franco RHP (1-3, 6.41) 6:05 CT.

FCL Cardinals 3, FCL Marlins 13

The Cardinals (15-16) were walloped by the Marlins 13-3 in a Wednesday contest at Roger Dean Stadium Field 1.  Starter Michael McGreevy, the Cardinals 2021 first round draft pick, pitched one inning and gave up one run on one hit, struck out one and walked one.  Jose Davila relieved and tossed five innings and surrendered three runs, two earned, on three hits.  Tink Hence started the seventh and allowed four runs, three earned, while recording only one out.  Tyler Statler got the final two outs of the seventh but returned in the eighth and yielded six runs.  Ettore Giulianelli threw the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings.  McGreevy took the loss, his first of the season.

Hansel Otamendi

The Marlins scored one in the first inning, two in the fourth and one in the sixth to go up 4-0.  In the home half of the sixth, the Cardinals plated three on a two-run home run by Hansel Otamendi, and a solo home run by Edgardo Rodriguez.  That was the only scoring by the Cardinals.

Otamendi and Rodriguez were both 2-for-4.  The only other extra base hit was a double by Jake Burns.

In the field, Darlyn Del Villar and Jesus Orrechia each made a throwing error.  Albert Inoa had a fielding miscue.  Burns had a passed ball.
