Monday’s light schedule got even lighter with only one of three St. Louis Cardinals short-season teams able to take the field. Player of the Day Joshua Baez impressed in the FCL Cardinals’ loss while Tropical Depression Grace wiped out the entire DSL schedule.

Results from games played Monday, August 16th.

FCL Cardinals 5 vs. FCL Mets 10

Home runs came back to bite the Florida rookie-level Birds in their 10-5 defeat to the FCL Mets (18-15).

Five of the Mets’ 10 tallies were generated by three long balls yielded by three Cardinals’ pitchers.  Starter Reinys Portillo surrendered the first one, a solo shot that was one of six tallies permitted, five earned, on seven hits and a walk in 4 1/3 frames.

Portillo began the fifth with his team up 4-3 but got the hook with one runner having touched home plus two more on base.  Ben Baird recorded the inning’s last two outs but not before allowing both inherited runners to score plus two of his own on a double and two-run bomb.

The third and final long ball was served up by Alex Cornwell, who pitched the sixth.  Cornwell (15th Round) issued a one-out free pass before surrendering the two-out blast in his first taste of pro ball.

A trio of 2021 draftees proceeded to make their professional debuts as well.  Southpaws Chris Gerard (12th round) and Alex Ruiz (sixth round) posted identical lines, as each hurler faced the minimum with two strikeouts.   It should also be noted that Ruiz did hit a batter who was caught stealing.   Right-hander Trent Baker (ninth round) tossed a one-two-three ninth with two ground- and one fly- ball out.

The only FCL Cardinal with a multi-hit performance was center fielder Joshua Baez, our Player of the Day.  The 54th pick in the 2021 First-Year Player Draft doubled and tripled in five at bats, crossed home one time and drove in two.

Four of Baez’ teammates had one hit each, including right fielder Hansel Otamendi and left fielder Smith Vargas, who both went 1-for-3 with a walk. Otamendi scored twice and Vargas once.
